A Good Old Friend
Always a sweet pleasure to slip inside away from the hum drum of neighbouring, loud eateries and traffic. A quiet retreat with great food.
A good place to network
This is a classy stop off for anyone needing to get to Paddington in a hurry - and impresses those from all walks of life without being over the top or too expensive. Would thoroughly recommend.
A hidden gem, with a great
A hidden gem, with a great connection to journalism and art. Food was delicious and presented beautifully.
Superb food in Paddington
This is a seriously good restaurant offering the highest quality of cooking using the most excellent starting materials. The quality of the ingredients always shows through; much of it sourced from the restaurant's farm in Norfolk. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed by the food, the wine which is especially noteworthy for its range and quality at a reasonable price, or the service. The atmosphere is what I would call quietly professional, it seems to reflect the journalism/medical connections of many of the clientele and the service is expert, attentive and knowledgeable.
This is modern English food at its best, I seriously recommend it, it deserves to be better known.
Good lunch for three. Good range of choices. We all ate different dishes and were all pleased with taste and presentation. Will use again.
Best lunch in Paddington
Fresh food inventively prepared, there's not a better place in the neighborhood.
At late hour there was lot of people eating = good ambiance. Food was surprisingly much fresher and better seasoned than last September when we were dining the first time at Front Line. And the first time wasn' t half bad either. Thanks for a really succulent meal!
Always wary of restaurants close to major train stations but Frontline blows my theory right out of the water. Great service and super delicious food. Thank you
really fresh and delicious food
Just 2 minutes walk from Paddington station. Excellent menu and great 2 course lunch deal. Highly recommend for a working lunch.
we have eaten here several
we have eaten here several times after the Front Line Club meetings. The food is always good, the service efficient and the atmosphere friendly.
Lovely food, great atmosphere
Every dish was wonderfully delicious and the wine was excellent. The service was good. The Frontline name attracts a certain globe-trotter kind of clientele which adds to the aura. It's glamorous in a low-key way.
Small things that could improve: The tables are packed together so closely you have to be careful not to elbow the stranger seated nearby. This is a little too cozy. More vegan options would be good, though the one that was on the menu was delicious.
It's pricey so not an every week place to eat, but worth it when you do go.
A very pleasant pl:ace to eat for the cool crowd in Paddington. Great food choices that is well made and tasty. The staff was accommodating and hospitable.
A bit bland
Once you find the way in, the restaurant is simple, smart and stylish. The staff were helpful and efficient and the food was good value. My slight disappointment was with the lack of flavour, ( I should have known better than have fish cakes) exacerbated by the delight from one of my friends, about the fantastic, flavoursome, absolutely delicious, squid starter, which he chose and I didn't. All in all, a pleasant rather than memorable meal.
Paddington's only good restaurant
This is the only decent restaurant around Paddington station. I use it often. As always the staff are friendly and attentive without being all-over-one. The menu is fairly short but there is something for all tastes. The wine list is also good and not too expensive. Maybe one shouldn't write such good reviews in case too many people find out about it!
Definitely worth a return visit
Very good cooking, relaxed and casual atmosphere in the smallish dining area, alas somewhat spoiled by loud crashes of dirty plates being dealt with by waiting staff. Large windows and a corner location give great sense of light and space. Definitely worth a return visit.
Island of Quality in a Desert
Frontline is a great venue, friendly service from an enthusiastic young staff, good food from responsible sources, good ambiance with some great photos on the walls - and just off Praed Street - a gastronomic desert.
Perfect for early dinner before heading home on the train from Paddington.
I have been numerous times and never been disappointed.
Always a delight
We are starting to make the Frontline 'The' place we take out-of-London or overseas visitors. It's a little different in ambience (given the club upstairs), the food is always wonderful, and the service both attentive and not in our face. They just get the balance right. The fish is always impeccable--all the ingredients are interesting. The service is top-notch. We closed the place out and the staff quietly got on with what they needed to do until we remembered our manners. Downstairs (for the loos), I caught a glimpse of the work area and kitchen and it was spotless. The whole place is impressive and I almost don't want to sing its praises, as then too many people will know about it and we won't get in!
My second time at this restaurant as a visitor from Australia, 4 years apart.
Still as good as ever, an enjoyable catchup meal with friends.
Splendid dinner pre theatre. Squid starter divine, should have had it again for dessert. Great photos. Friendly staff.
This was our second visit to Frontline, and it didn't disappoint. Good food, good service, and a nice place to be. I'd recommend it.
wanted a restaurant that was
wanted a restaurant that was casual but felt a little special or different to celebrate my son's birthday. Frontline fitted the bill perfectly. Friendly, helpful but unobtrusive staff. Really good food, menu quite different without being too clever. Good value too. Will go again.
Fabulous Food in Wonderful Setting
Anyone remotely interested in journalism and keen on great food MUST try this place out. Frontline is a journalist's club with a private member's room upstairs, but the ground floor restaurant is open to anyone. The decor is superb - simple understated walls with stunning famous pictures from journalistic events. The food is fabulous - a very high quality - and the wine list superb. This is NOT a cheap place to eat, but I can promise you that what you pay is worth it for the quality and ambience. Check out their website too - they run around 200 workshops on journalism every year which are open to the public!
Outstanding meal; interesting times
This restaurant offered a variety of tastes from simple foods. The portions were large enough to satisfy any appetite and extremely tasty. The desserts were delicious as well. Nice selection of wines. Not totally sure of the connection between the name of the restaurant (and the thusly disturbing images on the walls) and a delightful dinner but nevertheless the entire experience was excellent.
Business lunch, the set menu
Business lunch, the set menu is very good value and the quality of the food is excellent with good service. Also a really handsome interior
Extremely handy for Paddington station
Quick service, charming staff,
Quick service, charming staff, great value, great atmosphere, really truly delicious food.
Made a last minute booking
Made a last minute booking via toptable. Due to a mix up we were, on arrival, whisked upstairs to members' area, where things were quiet.
Fantastic service, a nice balance struck between attentive and discreet, very professional.
Food very good; we ate a mixture of set and a la carte menus. Taste & presentation both very good, well seasoned and finished. In a previous life I trained & worked as a chef, and thought the food well crafted and appreciated the thought and effort that had gone in. A proper artisan in the kitchen, skilful and proficient.
It seemed noisier downstairs, so can't comment on that environment, but upstairs was great!
Good food and friendly stuff
The food was really good, their service was excellent and fairly reasonable.
Had 2 bottles of beer, 2 bottles of wine, 2 mains and one pudding and came up to arond £80.
Reallly good food and ambience.
Reallly good food and ambience. Service very good and attenive
Came here pre-theatre so not that busy, but the food was great. The starter of calamari and chickpeas was very tasty but really diffcult to eat (try balancing the chickpeas and the squid together on your fork!!), however the main course of roast chicken, garlic mash and girolles was one of the best things I have tasted in a long time... absolutely delicious!!
Nice lunch: service slow
The waiters were pleasant and the food good. It took nearly 30 minutes to be served our only course ( main course) and for a business lunch this is too long. Otherwise very good
Grouse? To eat yes! Otherwise none.
Excellent meal and service
Very convenient for padding ton
Inspiring venue, and good value
We had a business lunch, and chose the £15 set menu. This was excellent value, great quality and the service was very efficient. The decor of the place is inspiring, with all the big very famous photographs of key significant journalistic events. I would recommend this place for its unusual surroundings, good service, very well presented and quality food, and good value. I will surely go again when in the area!
Pleasant atmosphere. Good food and service. Interesting photographs with the war correspondent theme.
Prettiest restaurant manager
Nice place, good food (superb steak tartare, good chicken w garlic mash) my counterparty went for grilled squid and a fish main and seemed very happy. One Bloody Mary, one bottle of italian Primitivo (a bit too sweet for my taste but on spec for a Primitivo). We paid £33 each.
And then, there was the restaurant manager... Bellissima! all grace, all elegance. The fifth star for ambience, is for her.
great lunch, great location
How brilliant to have discovered this great place to eat, so close to Paddington. And an extra bonus that it has really good vegetarian options. Food was fabulous, and the staff couldn't have been more lovely. I'm planning to become a regular!
I wasn't paying................
and Frontline, whilst not being exorbitant, is not cheap either. However, given the ambiance, the good food quality, attentive service and on a special occasion, its a very pleasing overall experience. Also convenient for the users of public transport being a short walk from Paddington and Lancaster Gate tube. Its also impossible to ignore the iconic photos that decorate the walls.
A choice of food for all tastes,
A choice of food for all tastes, a lovely and interesting place particularly for lunch
very good lunch.
With such a good selection of classic fare and a really excellent drinks menu, I'd be happy to recommend this restaurant to anyone. Situated just a short walk from Paddington station, the location is hard to beat. Frontline wasn't my first choice for lunch, but foul weather meant I chose it for its proximity to the station. I'm glad I did and I wouldn't hesitate to go again.
Great ambiance and food was
Great ambiance and food was excellent... rib-eye cooked to perfection
Very good choice...venison was superb. I strongly recommend it.
Fantastic food & service!
The food was gorgeous, the staff were attentive but not intrusive and the ambience was relaxed while also feeling special. Great for meeting up with someone who has to get to Paddington too!
Very nice evening
Brilliant as always
I've been coming here for several years now and it has never let me down. Food, service and ambience has always been very good indeed.
Best in Paddington
Frontline does not have much competition in this area but it is still a good restaurant with an interesting wine list .
Great food, interesting crowd
First class food with excellent venison and grouse on the menu. Not cheap but well executed and service was helpful, obliging and knowledgable.
Most interesting thing is the clientele. It's location off Praed Street means it's refreshingly free of braying expense account City drones showing off or the adland crowd that infest Soho. An older, low key crowd with little to prove it seems.
Will be back for sure.
I visited this restaurant
I visited this restaurant twice in 2 weeks. The space is lovely-simple and unpretentious.Staff are just right -charming & not over-attentive.Set lunch is very good value--excellent roast chicken and fishcake (more fish, plain&smoked, than potato) Wonderful panna cotta but apple crumble just stewed apple with shortbread broken over it as an afterthought--didnt fit with the care taken over the other dishes.Would definitely go back if in the Paddington area
Lived up to its reputation
Unobtrusive service of good food. Spicy sweetcorn soup, very good; salmon fishcake was a little dry but all forgiven for the excellent bread-and-butter pudding.
Decent food close to paddington
Going to the Drowned man next to Paddington station was concerned that only places to eat round there cater for travellers rather than foodies. delighted to find Frontline via top table and will remember if need to dine again in the area. lovely food and we really enjoyed blue cheese popcorn. mistake made with dessert but rectified immediately. This place fills a much needed gap in the market. Well done and will be back and recommend to others.
THE LITTLE THINGS
No longer in first flush of youth, find many restaurants too noisy and lighting can be too glaring. The Frontline offers the opportunity to have a proper conversation and you do not have to point at things on the menu for the benefit of the serving staff. The atmosphere is calm and inviting, rare commodities.
Pre- theatre dinner
Went to Frontline at 5.30pm before theatre. 3 of us. We each had starters, main course and coffee with wine and 1 glass of English champagne. Lovely food. Service good. Ambience pleasant. Prices reasonable - good value for money. Would definitely return. Can recommend.
