  • Catering: We are very selective about our suppliers and work closely with them to ensure that our high standards are maintained.

    Where possible we source locally – for example partridge, pheasant and free range eggs all come from a ten mile radius. We choose to go to Scotland for our beef and to Northern Ireland for our Finnebrogue venison as we believe both of these meats to be exceptional.

    In the spring and summer our poly tunnel provides the kitchen with herbs, lettuce and tomatoes. Our raspberries, apples, pears, plums and wild blackberries feature regularly in our dishes.
  • Private Party Facilities: We have three dining rooms which can all be used as private dining rooms - the Conservatory seats up to fifty, the Victorian Room seats up to twenty-four and the Oak Room seats up to sixteen.

    We cater for a wide variety of functions including parties, meetings, wedding receptions, christenings and funerals. All of our rooms are licensed for wedding ceremonies.

Redoats Farmhouse is a 15th Century Family run Restaurant with rooms and has been in the Butterfield family since the early nineteen hundreds.

In many ways we haven’t changed much over the past 40 years – we still believe in old fashioned hospitality, high quality modern-style food and good times.

From the moment you arrive at Redcoats we try to put you at ease and allow the welcoming atmosphere to envelope you.

We put much thought, care and passion into everything we do. Our Head Chef, Scott Liversedge and his team produce award winning, seasonal menus using the very best ingredients. Scott has managed to achieve a prestigious AA rosette award for his food and retain this for 8 years running. We are working very hard to achieve our second one.

Otherwise excellent value for money and the food is of good quality and i would recommend it on this basis if they can sort out their staff to pay attention to all diners rather than just the people they know!"

  • "Excellent experience. Normally preferring red meet, I like to choose fish if it looks like it could be well cooked. I took the risk here and was well rewarded. Scallops are a particular favourite of mine but rarely are they cooked to my taste, usually being cooked too long and losing their appeal. Here they were cooked to perfection and started the meal well. I decided also to go for fish as a main course as the menu description attracted me and I was not let down, with the fish again being cooked just enough. I am normally not a desert person but induldged on this ocasion and again it was very good. Nice surroundings excellent attentive staff and a feel of a establishment clearly trying to make sure their guests have the best experience."

So, it's off to Redcoats with our collective of five (adult) kids, their partners and sometimes a couple of others. The staff are always friendly, the food superb (recommend the chateaubriand) and the wine list more than adequate."

  • "Redcoats has the worst service I have ever received. Our 3 course lunch took almost 3 hours (there were 5 of us in the party), no one checked back on us at any point, and the wait between courses was ludicrously long. No one apologised for the wait and when I did mention it upon paying I was given an unpleasant look. I have emailed Redcoats to complain and was told (by the sales team) that I would be contacted by the manager. 12 days went by and nothing, so I emailed again, and was told the same thing again. That was 5 days ago. No wonder the waiting staff are so terrible, as the managerial team obviously don’t care about their customers, and that is the example they are setting to their staff. Such a shame as the food was delicious."

I decided to order one of the recommended steaks, which was also one of the more expensive ones. I was extremely disappointed with the steak, it was tough and very difficult to eat. All in all an expensive evening without the quality I was expecting."

  • "This was our third visit. We love the chance to sit by the fire with pre-dinner drinks and the food is very good. Only two things could make it outstanding. 1. Vegetarian options that don't involve cheese. There's lots of interesting vegetarian food these days. It would be great to see the restaurant do something innovative. 2. The music didn't fit the surroundings. Jazz, classical, easy listening, chill out, anything relaxed would add to the ambience. Also the volume was set very low."

  • "Short and sweet - Arrived to a pleasant roaring log fire in the lounge, greeted and offered drinks there. Chose our food and dining drinks. Sat back and relaxed as best as poss before being called through to the restaurant. Shame that there was a reception desk in the lounge though. Not too private for the guest to relax in. The food was sublime and service was pleasant indeed. Only negative in restaurant was that every now and then, in the wonderful settings, strange music would be played into the restaurant. Eg I was there celebrating a romantic evening with my wife at Redcoat Farmhouse hotel when suddenly Elvis and Heartbreak Hotel would get played. Amazing value. Can't wait to return."

  • "My cousin and I wanted something a little special for her birthday. Her mum (my aunt ) died in February and my mum (her aunt) died on boxing day. Between us we had a pretty awful year. My cousin likes beef as long as it is pretty rare. The waitress explained that the beef came medium but was cooked rare. A request for it to come out that way was met. The waitress explained that would be a 20 minute wait as I had requested partridge, carved by the chef. Food come out piping hot and beautifully cooked. Wont even mention the fresh bread (yes I will) . Baked on the premises. My cousin said olive bread was the best ever and the beef nothing like she had had for a very long time. The ambience was relaxing. very relaxing and enjoyable experience"

  • "We have eaten here about 2 or 3 time a year for most of the last 20 years when we moved to Hitchin as it was then known to be THE place to eat locally. And it still is despite Hitchin now having a plethora of chain restaurants but not one compares with Redcoats in ambience, presentation and the choice of food and wine. Taking this into account Redcoats offers real value for money despite its slightly higher prices than the competition. It is naturally still very popular, especially for the bargain Sunday lunch when an early reservation is essential. Of the several dining areas our preference is for the Conservatory with its views of the attractive gardens especially when in season."

  • "We have been to Redcoats many times and 90% of the time it has been excellent. Friday 13th wasn't. The starter was excellent. My wife's chicken wellington was excellent - the only criticism was that there was too much on the plate. My roast turkey was not so good. Compressed reformed turkey is not what I would expect of Redcoats, it was also dry and had very little taste. There was also far too much on the plate. After the mains were cleared we were given the dessert menu and left alone to choose. After a 20 minute wait (during which time there was a noticeable absence of staff in the restaurant) we decided enough was enough and forego dessert and coffee. Still no staff in the restaurant so we went to the bar, paid and left"

The food itself was delicious, and the breakfast, which provided an excellent choice, in the morning incredible - filling and tasty to put it mildly. The overall impression was of a charming place with very friendly staff. And they are dog-friendly too."

The food was adequate, though we were charged full fare rather than the meal deal that we should have received. The service was very poor. we had to wait over an hour to be seated and were thereafter poorly attended, even though there were only five other groups of diners in the room."

  • "We went to 'Redcoats for their Wednesday night steak evening. You can have an 8oz rump with excellent chips for just £15 or pay more for a different cut. Before the meal is served a small, beautifully presented taster of two other rare cuts are served as a starter. They really know how to cook steak well at Redcoats and I recommend the steak night as good quality and good value."

  • "It was a 1 year wedding anniversary , so we hoped for impeccable service, ambience, romance and to feel special. we got this at Redcoats. after a welcome glass of champagne by the open fire, we reminisced about our wedding, once we ordered our meals from the very extensive although i would say slightly expensive menu. we were offered a taster which as lovely. the Wine was superb and we were not over serviced. the room was a little cold, being the conservatory and would have benefited from some heaters but with all the food we soon warmed up. the Dessert of cherry cake was divine and we had a lovely meal."

Right from our arrival we were made to feel welcome, and when one of our party of 10 was delayed, the Staff were understanding and even brought out some canapés to eat with our drinks in the bar - a very nice touch we thought. Dinner was piping hot, delicious with excellent service. A relaxed and enjoyable evening was had by all with great compliments from our guests!"

A classy, country feel to a lovely old building of distinction. I had delicious Chicken and Wild Mushrooms en croute with rosti. Splendid. Our meal from the lunch menu was everything we expected - Lovely quality food that was very well presented, attentive service without being rushed, and a great view of the beautiful gardens from our table in the conservatory. Excellent selection of wines - We had the South African Pinotage which complimented our meal perfectly. Looking forward to finding another excuse to return soon."

  • "I booked this restaurant as were were feed-up with restaurants offering good quality food out of a packet! From the pictures the place exudes ambiance and we were not disappointed it was a special lunch for my mothers birthday. She was really taken with the artifacts that adorn the rooms, many of which brought back many memories to her and took great delight in reminiscing her past encounters with them. The food was of exceptional quality, the presentation was excellent and the staff were attentive and helpful. The best meal we have had out for a long time. We Shall be coming back."

Good selection to choose from all round.   • "Visited Stevenage for a business meeting with 2 colleagues. Happened upon Redcoats with no prior knowledge thanks to Top Table. Really excellent meal - helpful efficient service, great choice of food, terrific value. Sophisticated food in traditional quantities. Could only manage 2 courses and if I had room would have eaten the starter again (mixed wild mushrooms with garlic and cheese on toast) as a dessert it was so good. Or maybe not, because the desserts looked great as well. I had to stay on after the meal for a couple of hours and I just sat and worked in one of the cosy lounges - was even given a free espresso to keep me going. Can't wait for the next meeting!"

  • "The staff were very welcoming and attentive, not overbearing though. It was our 10th wedding anniversary, so just the two of us, for a romantic evening. We ordered from the 'A La Carte Menu'. We ate in the conservatory, which overlooks the garden. The food was fantastic, worth every penny. We have already recommended to friends and family and even though we live a couple of miles away, are thinking about possibly booking a room and staying over. We had booked a cab to take us home afterwards, but unfortunately someone else took our cab!!! The owner offered to drive us home, which was very sweet and unexpected!!! But really, we cannot do the food justice by comments, it has to be tried!! We will definitely be going back!!!"
