A word from Osteria Antica Bologna
A Northcote Road favourite for over twenty years - that’s an awfully long time on the London restaurant scene - Antica Bologna is as fresh and thrilling as the day it first opened its doors, it conjures up images of hidden away village osterias in the wild countryside of Emilia Romagna or the rolling hills of Tuscany, its cheerful welcome befitting of an old family favourite. Chef Marzio Zacchi passionately believes in using fresh, locally sourced and seasonal produce having grown up in the Piemonte countryside surrounded by a family who reared chickens, grew veg and cured their own salami. However, despite his rustic upbringing, Zacchi has brought to Osteria Antica Bologna’s food the kind of sophistication that can only be gained through several years training in top London restaurants.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is an absolute joy for anyone who loves Italian food. Consistently excellent cuisine and very good value for money. Atmosphere is always buzzy. I was last here on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Great place - most recommended!"

  • "It was fantastic meals and good selection of wines. We really enjoyed my birthday lunch. Friendly staffs looked after us very well. Thank you."

  • "An excellent place for a quick or long lunch. We had a quick one. food extremely good and plenty of choice. service a bit slow even though there were plenty of staff milling around. Food and drink came promptly once ordered but getting the attention of staff was not easy, we were sitting inside"

  • "I have been coming to this restaurant on and off for years. I have not been for a while because the last time I went it did not have a great choice for a vegetarian friend. However, this time the choice was great for her too. Really good food. The only slight negative was that it was very noisy as there was a big group at a nearby table."

  • "Went for an evening with a friend. It was busy and the food and service were good. It was a nice relaxing atmosphere and would definitely go again."

  • "The food and service at Osteria is outstanding. Great flavours in the food, always very fresh and seasonal."

  • "Love this restaurant and have been going for a few years. Something that is actually very rare a well priced authentic Italian restaurant in London. Most are either incredibly over priced or poor trattoria serving Pizza and stodgy lasagne. The service is good but not overly fussy. Highly recommended."

  • "went with a vegetarian friend and lots of options for him. unfortunately we were seated by the alley-way in the back part of restaurant, would next time ask for front section. otherwise cheap and cheerful italian"

  • "My starter of a selection of deep-fried seafood was delicious. Sadly, my main course option was disappointing. I opted for the lamb steak which was quite gristly and rather chewy. My poor father-in-law ordered the pork belly but it was so over-cooked it was inedible. It's a pity because the staff worked so hard to please but the food, on the whole, just wasn't up to scratch."

  • "I've been going to this restaurant on and off for years and it never fails. My salad starter was simple but with a delicious dressing and the calves liver was cooked to perfection which is not always the case. Friends ate the deep fried courgettes followed by pasta and reported unfussy perfection. They don't overload the plates which meant there was space for dessert - a highly praised creme brûlée served in a cup and a similarly applauded tiramisu. Service just right. I shall definitely return."

  • "Really good meal, proper traditional Italians, pasta was incredible, steak was very very good, nice selection of reasonably priced wine (mostly Italian), friendly efficient service, nice ambience (traditional trattoria rather than posh or fancy), reasonably priced, busy and buzzing atmosphere."

  • "I have really high standards and usually find something to "improve", this restaurant was wonderful. Absolutely delicious & great service."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Went with three friends and we tried a number of the specials that day - including fried artichokes, monkfish with cherry tomatoes, spinach and black olives and rump lamb. I enjoyed fruit misto followed by the monkfish dish, which were both delicious. We also enjoyed a very nice bottle if Chardonnay from Friuli (one ov May favourite Chardonnays) and this was well- matched with the food. One if my friends had quite a lot of fat on her full Lamb but this was soon changed for another dish. A very nice meal all round."

  • "Great rustic Italian food - not your run of the mill pizza pasta. The food here is very tasty and definitely one of the best restaurants in the area. However the 'new' yellow decor is souless... and does not reflect the calliber of the restaurant. Such a shame! Please don't be fooled - go in and have some fantastic food."

  • "This restaurant is like stepping off Northcote Road and into an Italian gastronimic delight. The staff are efficient and helpful, the food is delicious and the atmosphere is charming and slightly rustic. The wine list is perhaps slightly short and limited but that's more than made up for by the food and the ever changing list of specials. If you like your food you'll love Antica Bologna!"

  • "Two of us went to Osteria on a Monday night and even though we were the second table in there, it soon filled up, albeit being a small restaurant. The waitress was excellent and service was generally very good. The starters - Courgette Fritte and N'Duja Bruschetta were both excellent as was the main of the Wild Boar Ragout. The wine list seemed decent and nicely priced. The mains took a little while to come out but the service was attentive without being over-bearing. Overall a lovely little find on Northcote Road and would defintely come again."
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "We had a lovely dinner. The food was very tasty, the wine was lovely and service was very good. We couldn't have asked for a nicer evening."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Four of us had an evening meal with one having to leave early. The restaurant accommodated our need for speed for one of us. Relaxed atmosphere. Thankfully we were not asked 5 times whether all was well with our meal, yet the waiting staff were there when we needed them. Thoroughly recommend this excellent restaurant."

  • "Having had an expensive but disappointing dinner at Murano's on 10th February, we were delighted that the valentine's dinner we had at this restaurant was superb. The Crab and avocado salad to start was mouth watering, and the antepasto of fresh lobster linguine was full of taste and actually contained lots of chunks of fresh lobster. The T-bone steak for main course was excellent quality and cooked to perfection. Whilst the ambience was lacking slightly, the overall experience was so much better than at Murano's where the food arrived at the table cold, and the bill arrived too hot to touch!"

  • "Not knowing the restaurant well and having had some inferior Italian meals recently....this was a Happy Surprise. Wonderful food and delicious wine. An affordable and delightful evening for discerning foodies!!"
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "We spent Valentine's in Antica Bologna, we've lived nearby for years and for some reason have never made it in! It was a really lovely evening, the service was superb, the food delicious and the atmosphere warm and relaxed. All in all a great place to eat, and our new favourite in the Clapham area..."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Home-made beef ravioli and pan fried sea bream with the zucchini fritto and salad - absolutely delicious, as always. There is always a nice 'hum' in the restaurant without it being overbearing. Looking forward to our next visit."
    dined on 11/02/2014
  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the food was very good. We went back to this restaurant having frequented it regularly when we lived in Clapham 10 years ago. We were slightly disappointed that they had changed the décor from rustic Italian to a yellow café look. We were also slightly disappointed that the menu seemed much more mainstream than it used to be, 10 years ago it had a more interesting, more diverse and more Roman menu. Having said that the service was brilliant and the food was top quality."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "Nice food. Good wine. Even house wine was good value. Service very nice. Had the pork belly . Was really nice. Portion very big, more meat than fat too. My desert was so so. Chose the coconut sorbet, which was actually ice cream. They do add 12% service charge. So for a glass of house wine. A main, desert, and service. It was 28pounds each. My friend had red mullet , which was delicious and light , followed by tiramisu which was to my liking. I am not usually a fan of tiramisu"

  • "The food was delicious and the service excellent, as always!"

  • "Thought it was a cute little trattoria. Nothing fancy but thought it was nice as very unpretentious and food was good."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "The Osteria Antica Bologna is a gem, faithful to Italian tradition with the added value of great staff willing to go the extra mile to make your breakfast, lunch or dinner experience a true delight !"
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "Enjoyable dinner, service was perfect attentive but not intrusive. Food matched the price tags. The acoustics of the restaurant are very strange and you do feel the need to raise your voice when speaking to the person beside you. Overall a good experience"
    dined on 16/01/2014
  • "Was delighted to find on what is often the quietest time of the year that AOB was very busy. The meal was good, the staff very pleasant and aware of customers. The restaurant is a bit cramped .. and tables close together. As always the noise level was higher than really comfortable but a full restaurant of happy people is today noisy. Could all restaurants try and find a sound reducing surface that is hygienic so we can chat without shouting"
    dined on 04/01/2014
  • "This is a good local restaurant offering a sensible sized regular menu and daily specials which are always interesting. There is a lot of competition in this area - mainly from chain restaurants and pubs - so they do well to fly the flag for the independents and they are always busy. Generally the service is very good but occasionally when they are very busy it can be a bit slow. Have never had anything other than a good meal here."
    dined on 04/01/2014
  • "Lovely menu with delicious regional dishes - ravioli alla zucca with butter and sage was excellent. Great to have a choice from the normal Bolognese. all the staff very friendly and helpful and happy to chat. We will definitely be back."
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "Been here a few times but the first time since a refit. Food is great, really good value. Went with a girlfriend and we ate a lot and drank a lot. Great wine and super value. Would certainly recommend as a place to go with a date, mate, girlfriend for a very unpretentious and great value dinner."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "I used to frequent the Osteria when living in Clapham and remember the home made pastas, the delicious Roman inspired menu and the buzz of a busy, cosy, friendly local. Like most of Northcote Road, it has had a face lift and is not unlike so many other other local Italians in South London. The food is fine, but the charm and uniqueness has been lost. The slow service, with over half an hour waiting to be asked for drinks order or given bread, was disappointing. But, reasonable value and would go again."
    dined on 20/12/2013
  • "Went on Friday evening for a girls catch up dinner. Booked only couple of hours ahead but still got a good table at the front of the restaurant. Service was efficient and pleasant and food authentic, delicious and well presented."
    dined on 06/12/2013
  • "Both food and service are acceptable standard. I have been to this restaurant a few times. They offer reasonable good food. I won't say it's outstanding value and quality. Acceptable and nice are the words I would use. I will definitely go back for a meal with friends."
    dined on 05/12/2013
  • "Again we had a great meal at Osteria Antica Bologna. The service is warm, friendly but unintrusive. The food is of a very high standard with great flavours. The atmosphere is always friendly and everyone feels like they are enjoying being there. Highly recommended."
    dined on 21/11/2013
  • "Dined here with my partner last Friday. I was there for the third time, but for him it was the first visit. I always love the food there, it's proper Italian cuisine. We shared the nibbles as you always get a basket of fresh bread anyway. For the main I had the slow roasted organic pork belly and he had char-grilled chicken “paillarde”. It was outstanbding! The pork belly was very soft with a crusty crackling. My partner said it was the best chicken he had in a very long time. We dine out every week so I think it must have been very good. He enjoyed a selection of ice cream whilst I had the pear and chocolate tart. Overall a very delicious meal. The wine menu is just great - we will come back very soon!"
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "Very good food and wine. It was busy and service was a little slow but not too bad. Nice ambience and style of restaurant"
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "Very nice italian restaurant. The service from the waiters and front of house was extremely great. The starter of fritto misto was cooked to perfection. The main of butterfly chicken breast was good but a bit plain, however still good. The atmosphere was great."
