Diner Reviews
  • "Our third visit, and this time with friends who really enjoyed it too. We all had the six course tasting menu and each dish was well worth the wait. We like Orwells for many reasons, but the fact that the chef is very accommodating of our aversion to dairy in recipes really stands out. We didn't do wine flights this time but on previous occasions the young sommelier proved to be a real star, and another good reason to return."

  • "What a treasure tucked away in the Chiltern hills just a short drive from Shiplake and Henley - came upon it by chance on the internet researching for a weekend away and it set up the whole weekend for us. Fabulous food, beautifully presented and great service from our hosts. Try the loin of tuna starter and the pigeon for main and you'll never want to bother again wondering if you can get a table at the Hand & Flowers-Marlow! Don't be put off by the unprepossessing front of the building - just head inside and enjoy."

  • "Second visit and went A la carte ( tapas before) and was not dissapointed. Steak was great and the fish and chips was considered better than some M stared competitors. Poods were good and I loved the cheese selection. Great meal again- can not wait for the next visit."

  • "Heard about Orwell’s and gave the tapas lunch menu a try. Tempura vegetables were light and tasty. Squid good. Mountjac rissoles very tasty and enjoyable. Venison brisola slightly disappointing but ok. Salmon good but not so keen on the horseradish ice cream. Chicken livers to die for had a second portion. The staff are very friendly and efficient well worth a visit or two."

  • "Great food and ambience spoilt by disappointing service. One hour for bread, 2 hours for main course and we had to rush an ice cream and coffee to catch the taxi. Three hours was too long. Great pity because if the guys got their act together, it could be one of the great restaurants."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "This is the second time we have visited for the tapas lunch, and we were not disappointed. The range of dishes is excellent and all are of very good quality. This is an interesting, different and delicious lunch, and very good value."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "Lovely, relaxed atmosphere and food at Michelin-standard in our opinion, just without the snobbiness that can come with that label!"
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "This restaurant has everything. Lovely ambience, privately arranged seating where you can't be overhead. Superb food and attentive staff with a sense of humour"

  • "Having enjoyed the set lunch several times before we moved on to the new Tapas type menu for the first time. There is an excellent selection of small dishes which you could have individually or share and gives much better choice than the previous set lunch formula. Three dishes each would be a good light lunch and four would satisfy the larger appetite. All dishes were beautifully prepared in accordance with the high standards you can expect from Orwells and the quality of the food was faultless. The dishes were served as they were prepared which provided some breathing space and gave a very relaxing experience. Very good value for such quality as always and we will do this again."

  • "We arrived for a booking at 2030 and finally got our starters about 915. Staff seemed completely disorganised. The portions were small and the so-called triple cooked chips weren't even double cooked. We won't be back!"

  • "I've been to Orwells a handful of times and really rate the food however on the last two occasions the service has been excruciatingly slow. Our table was booked at 9pm but we didn't get served our food until 10.30. Being told apologetically that the delay was due to all the tables arriving at 7.30pm made me wonder what booking system they were using...."

  • "My husband and I had such a good meal here. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food just fabulous. I highly recommend a visit."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "A raging storm outside but all calm and cosy inside. Pick of the menu was the Foie gras and smoked eel, "butchers cut" beef , lamb on dal and the white chocolate and ginger rhubarb....all superb...compliments to the chef and the staff"
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Every course was interesting and it was difficult to chose. The food was beautifully cooked and the flavour combinations were great. All courses were very strong and overall we had a very enjoyable meal."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "We booked for a birthday treat and although the food was good the very slow service ruined the evening. Our table was booked for 8.30 but other than water we did not get a drink until 9.45 and no food until after 10pm by which point we were feeliong very disgruntled. Our table was near the kitchens so we could see food going out to other tables who arrived considerably after us. All very annoying! The food was beautifully presented with some interesting combinations. Glad to have tried it but will think twice about booking again unless we plan a very lengthy meal."

  • "Another great meal at Orwells. Always delivers great food and service."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "The food was good, as usual, but the meal was not what I wanted. I expected two set courses, but instead got tapas. I will not be lunching here again if this arrangement remains I would not now recommend Orwells for lunch"
    dined on 23/01/2014
  • "Very impressed....good feel about the place, food very good....chips a bit dry and uninspiring but not in any way dreadful. Steak on a plank is hard to retain the heat...so it did get cold rather quickly."
    dined on 22/01/2014
  • "Superb quality food, as on previous visits. Thank you."
    dined on 03/01/2014
  • "Fantastic food as always accompanied by some delicious wines."
    dined on 28/12/2013
  • "We had the Surprise Menu - which is a 10 course meal, consisting of 'surprise' elements. Some of the food was very good, especially my cauliflower pannacotta, and pork with crackling topping. Other dishes ranged from the OK, to the inedible (flank steak that would dull the sharpest of knives).. The wine pairing consisted of a 1/3 glass each time, and the last 2 courses took over an hour to be served."
    dined on 14/12/2013
  • "High standard of cooking, interesting use of ingredients, creating great flavour combinations. When will we see a Michelin star? Excellent service. We go fairly regularly and always have a wonderful time. Recommend giving it a try."
    dined on 11/12/2013
  • "From the moment we arrived for Sunday lunch we experienced first class easy service and outstanding food. We were a party of 5 - 3 adults and two children. All had a splendid time. We would return to Orwells in a heart beat!"

  • "Great food and we love the menu's mix of fine dining with high end gastro pub fayre"
    dined on 07/12/2013
  • "The only detraction from Orwells was that I as a public transport user found it slightly difficult ot get to and from. However the setting is lovely and I would happily go again. The atmosphere was relaxed, but professional, and the staff excellent: they made a point of asking everybody where else they had dined, and what brought them here, which implies to me a genuine desire to work on tailoring the restaurant to the typical diners' desires, as well as just being friendly! The food was all excellent: celeriac soup was tasty and surprisingly light, the fish and chips was good, but made by the tartare sauce, which lifted the whole thing, and the panna cotta was rich, creamy and came with quite possibly the best shortbread I have ever eaten!"
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "Excellent, delicious food. Lovely surroundings. Excellent service."
    dined on 23/11/2013
  • "We enjoyed the set menu which is extremely good value - fantastic home made breads, divine celeriac soup, and fish and chips (which has beaten my all time favourite at the Drunken Duck in Cumbria) ! Service was spot on - relaxed but attentive. Stylish entrance, decor and bar area. All round winner !"
    dined on 22/11/2013
  • "We loved dinner at Orwells. Charming staff and warm friendly atmosphere on a cold night. Great menu with helpful limit of 6 choices for each course. Giles Corans favourite number!! Food EXCELLANT, imaginative and interesting. Try the delicious cauliflower panacotta, and halibut and veal combination. Staff well informed and ready to discuss sources for food, which were local or delivered from the sea rapidly. We will go back."
    dined on 21/11/2013
  • "tasty food with good service in pleasant surroundings at reasonable prices - will recommend to friends and relatives and definitely visit again. In fact we have been three times in the past month including our 30th Wedding Anniversary"

  • "Lovely, lovely lovely food and service. Just love Orwells it's my favourite."
    dined on 24/10/2013
  • "A friend and I went to Orwells intending to have the Auberge lunch but neither of us wanted fish and chips and with no alternatives within this menu decided to have starters instead. As we have come to expect from Orwells, the food was delicious and beautifully presented, but having treated ourselves to a glass of wine with our meal, it turned out to be rather more expensive than the tenner each we had expected! The wine selection is good, but the wine by the glass is, in my view, over-priced - you can buy a bottle of the same wine for less than a glass will cost you - isn't that just a bit greedy? Sadly for us, as we love the food, the place and the service, Orwells will probably have to stay as a venue just for special occasions."
    dined on 11/10/2013
  • "Fantastic food, innovative and well honed without being pretentious. Charming staff, lovely atmosphere and a good wine list all at a reasonable price. We booked a table for a later slot 6 for Sunday lunch and relaxed our way through some cracking breads, 3 courses, coffee and wines. The beef roast (being a Sunday) was the order of the day and it didn't disappoint, every element was cooked to perfection. For me the unmissable dish was the oxtail cake as a starter which apparently appears on their a la carte menu as well as Sundays. Michelin stars cannot be far away, perhaps once few restaurant critique type inconsistencies are perfected. If you're looking for grown up, accomplished dishes without the formal setting, look no further."
    dined on 20/10/2013
  • "Food excellent as usual. Friendly welcoming service. We have been here quite a few times over the last 3 years and we have never been disappointed. Looking forward to the next visit."
    dined on 17/10/2013
  • "This was a lunch with a colleague and as usual the set lunch was superb. Sardines on Toast followed by rare roast beef on bubble & Squeak - couldn't ask for more and it was great value for such quality. Service was impeccable and unintrusive - a perfect business lunch!"

  • "Had another marvellous Sunday lunch! Love Orwells..... x"
    dined on 06/10/2013
  • "Orwells do a very good set price lunch with no 'hidden extras' on the bill. The quality and presentation of the food was very good indeed, as was the service. The interior is contemporary and classy. We shall eat there again, and funds allowing we'd like to try the a la carte."
    dined on 03/10/2013
  • "The best meal I've had in a long time. Impeccable service, superb menu and lovely wine flight."
    dined on 03/10/2013
  • "The food is delicious, the advice on which wine to choose is helpful and spot on. The service is very good. The portions are such that one has room for 3 courses and one day when the whole table is hungry enough I'd really like to try the tasting menu."
    dined on 02/10/2013
  • "Very good all round from welcome to organising a taxi when leaving. Food excellent, well presented, excellent taste and with sensible sized portions. We have been on several occasions and have never been disappointed."
