A word from Orso
Opened in October 1985, Orso is a wonderful restaurant in the heart of London’s West End. From the beginning the aim was to bring authentic Italian cuisine to Covent Garden and Orso delivers.
Orso prides itself in using only the freshest and finest ingredients many of them such as extra virgin olive oil, arugula, puntarelle, porcini mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella and white truffles when in season, sourced in Italy. But it is not just about the ingredients, our meals are prepared to perfection, served on hand painted Italian tableware designed by Designers Guild and accompanied with a selection of fine Italian wines.

Orso is the perfect destination for the London diner, offering a busy but attentive service, animated atmosphere and tempting menu.

Diner Reviews
  • "Very pleased to find food and service still good at Orso. Went there after the Opera - very busy and people still coming in after us (11pm+) Restaurant has been refurbished since our last visit - adds to the ambience."

  • "very slow service, food good but not great, cost £35 a head for a starter and a small sized pasta and one small glass of wine!"

  • "We've been going to Orso since it opened in 1985 for good Italian food, great service and a buzzy atmosphere. New owners have wisely retained the same key staff whilst tweaking the menu and opening up the seating with banquettes against two walls. For post theatre/opera/concert the menu offering is perfect - we tend to stick to starters and pasta dishes offering better value and a good choice."

  • "My family enjoyed a wonderful meal at Orso celebrating my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary. We had a pre-theatre meal and from the moment we arrived at Orso we couldn't fault it. The staff were very welcoming and nothing was too much effort. The meal and wine were perfect. We chose Orso just because of its location and variety on the menu - 11 to cater for, including children! Would definitely recommend Orso!"

  • "Always a good place and suits all my friends who have different tastes in food, one who eats fish and veg but no meat, one who eats meat and veg but no fish. I have been going to Orso for many years and it is always a good place to meet We were not going to the theatre so had a good slot between the pre and post -theatre goers at 7. We had a party of 7 and allocated a lovely round table so could chat to everyone. Food was delicious and served well and sensitively! We had all forgotten how good Orso is!"

  • "Went to Orso to celebrate Mothers Day had a good time. Food was nice, staff very friendly although Service was good at the beginning they failed to offer my brother and nephew drinks after giving Mothers their prosecco. My brother had to ask for a drink for himself then the waitress walked off without offering my nephew one too."

  • "I arranged this table for both mine and my husbands parents as a special treat. I couldn't have been happier with their reaction and feedback. They absolutely loved it - the place, the staff, the food - all."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "I had better expectations and was disappointed. There isn't much of an italian feel to the place. Both the starters and the mains were in my opinion overpriced. I was promised an excellent "Caciucco" but what I got was less than mediocre and did not resemble at all to the original one. Good service, friendly staff I will not go back again"

  • "This is the third time we have eaten at the restaurant and the location and menu are very good."

  • "Had dinner with my ex bosses on a week night and had an enjoyable evening. Orso always has a good atmosphere whatever the day of the week and the food is reliable. We all decided to have the pear, walnut, endive & rocket salad with a gorgonzola dressing for the starter which was light and delicious."

  • "Don't waste your money going to Jamie's Italian, Carluccio's, Strada or Zizzi...where the chefs have probably never been in Italy based no the menu. Orso offers a delicate, smooth and genuine menu with delicacies from Southern Italy as well as other traditional ones. Great experience, delicious meal, pity for the rather "edgy" waiter, not really matching the warmth of the environment."

  • "Very interesting menu well executed and with decent authenticity. Polite and efficient service. Decent but over - priced wine list. My criticism is that there is no Italian vibe at all. It could benefit from a slightly more relaxed feel and an Italian or two in the waiting staff! The Manor Brasato was good enough to outweigh this quibble!"

  • "Went there with my wife on a very busy Saturday night and was glad to have booked through Toptable. We got what appeared to be one of the better tables for two on the night. The number of covers Orso can accommodate appears to have reduced recently (due to refubishment?) but the menu has been revamped positively and the wine list includes many vintages from lesser known parts of Italy which are outstanding in taste and value. Another recent innovation is the opportunity to sample several grappas at the end of the meal (at a reasonable price) without having to commit to just one! Orso remains authentically Italian, in my opinion, and is definitely one of the better Italian restaurants in this area of Theatreland."

  • "Outstanding value set price lunch - the food was outstanding with great service"

  • "Orso has a great atmosphere - buzzy without being noisy. And the set menu this time was particularly good value for lunch."
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "Always a warm and friendly welcome ,and the food is consistently good . Prices seem competitive for this part of London and there's plemty of drninkable wines at under £30"

  • "Pre Theatre Meal 5PM: Very nice restaurant. Perfect for a romantic meal. Fantastic feel. Great service. Would recommend."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Very good food and the service was excellent and friendly. Great for a night out before the theatre."

  • "Excellent for special occasions when you would be less concerned about the cost. You can expect absolutely top quality food, served in a comfortable and romantic environment. Tables are well positioned so you don't end up within hearing distance of another table and the servers are very attentive (I.e. There when you need them, gone when you don't). Only issues were the 2 hour time limit. Our meal (including starters and mains for 4 people but only 2 desserts and 2 mediocre bottles of wine came to £70 per person - £280 in total for a table of 4) this is clearly very different to the Top Table guide price of £26-40 I will be returning, but only when I've saved up for a VERY long time or when someone else is paying."

  • "We spent a very pleasant evening. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, efficient service. Good food nicely presented."

  • "Great authentic italian food in an oasis location in the middle of Convent Garden. The restaurant is at basement level, with a nice relaxed atmosphere, you can eat good food without feeling rushed. Decent wine list too."

  • "we found it a bit tired and dull - in need of refurbishment and updating"
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "Had a late table booked for 10.30, after a theatre visit. A very nice welcome, staff really nice, food was great and well cooked. Wasn't rushed to leave even though we were the last there and they were cashing the till up!!!!"
    dined on 02/01/2014
  • "Thanks for making us welcome. Lovely ambience for midday!"
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "Once again great food and excellent service. The sea bream I ordered was tasty and well presented. The beef and lamb dishes were rather expensive and so the food scored lower on value for money. However I would go back again."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "God food. Good service. Good value for being so near to Covent Garden. Did not hurry us, even though we overstayed a little - 2 hours is a bit tight with friend you don't often see."
    dined on 17/01/2014
  • "A great venue for a business lunch. Quiet, relaxed and discrete service. Excellent food and reasonable prices."
    dined on 13/01/2014
  • "Orso has been a trusted favourite of mine for years, for dinner with friends, pre and post theatre but also for business meals. Unfortunately, it has changed hands and that is immediately noticeable. In addition to minor changes to the interior, there has been some turnover in staff, and there is less choice on the menu and some of the icon dishes (like puntarelle which they used to serve when in season and was a real draw) have disappeared altogether. This visit which was meant as a treat before a performance was just the biggest waste of calories and money. The food just really wasn’t of the standard I’d expect, I can certainly do much better at home. There really is no reason to go here when there are so many other options in the area."

  • "It was excellent with superb food and wine. The Tuscan Seafood Stew was amazing and the whole experience delightful as always."

  • "Visited Saturday night @ 8.30 expecting it to be quiet while shows were on. Busy ,busy, great atmosphere and very welcoming. Ordered some martins, awesome marmalade one. Food was excellent and served quickly on hot plates. Lots going on in the restaurant and a nice buzz. My calves liver was superb, just how I like it and my partners bream was cooked just right. Lemon cake with Cointreau was delicious. All in all an excellent evening and will definitely visit next time in London ."

  • "I booked this restaurant for my wife's birthday and I'm sad to say it didn't live up to my expectations of a restaurant that charges top prices, the food was very bland and basic! I had braised lamb tagliatelle and it tasted more like a pre cooked microwave dish rather then the freshly made and prepared food which it advertises, I won't be visiting here again as their is alot better Italian restaurants around and also for better value!"

  • "This is the second time we have had a New Year’s Eve meal at Orso and it was excellent, it was a pre-theatre meal. We had plenty of time to enjoy our meal and get to the theatre on time. The service was superb; the staff made sure we were well taken care of while we were there. The food was excellent my wife had a special theatre goers menu and I had a al carte, the food was extremely good value. We will definitely go to Orso again, we enjoyed our meal there."
    dined on 31/12/2013
  • "I had booked Orso for my husbands birthday lunch because the reviews looked good, however we were dissapointed. WE did not feel it had that real Italian feel to it, it was just okay."
    dined on 03/01/2014
  • "I came to the restaurant with my family who were visiting for New Year's Eve. They are not used to restaurants other than the big chains and so at first were a little nervous, however the staff were very good knowing just the right thing to say. The food was lovely and there was a really good range of options, maybe too many for indecisive people. Despite it being such a busy night in a busy part of the city we never felt rushed and enjoyed a very good meal. I would happily go back again."

  • "Always excellent, with good Italian food and wine. Superb waitresses, who are very kind and helpful."

  • "I have been eating at Orso's for many years. It is very reliable, you know you are going to get good food served in a pleasant atmosphere."

  • "had an acceptable meal at Orso - Xmas set meal options were OK, service was friendly and to be fair I suspect would be rather more attentive when staff weren't as busy as at Xmas season? Starters were well presented and tasty, and deserts were generous and well prepared - though a tad overwhelmingly rich for our table (even the 18 year old). Main courses were underwhelming - guineafowl was overpowered by a salty sauce, bream was a rather better choice but also made a slightly odd plate with Butternut and Spinach Cannelloni in the opinion of our group. So overall experience was definitely well above that of the "chain" restaurants that abound in the area but disappointing given the other reviews we had seen"

  • "Good food and good service in a relaxed atmosphere."
    dined on 23/11/2013
  • "Welcoming staff and friendly, great food. The staff are aware of your time on pre-theatre and cater to it."
    dined on 13/12/2013
  • "Orso is on the east side of Covent Garden which is a little scruffy and touristy, but the restaurant itself in a basement is nice and intimate with discrete lighting, and was soon full. The wine was a good selection, but not cheap - we paid £44 for a mid-table Chianti. The food was reasonably priced and pleasant though not earth shattering. The limited choice of starters was disappointing, and the block of mozzarella in the salad a bit offputting. For mains, We chose the liver, which was nice (I had hoped for a whole pink piece rather than chopped) and the chicken, which sounded more interesting that it was. "Salsa verde" apparently means spinach. All in all, very nice and competent, nothing wrong, good value, and good service."
