Diner Reviews
  • "I like Moti Mahal - the food is great, and the set pre-theatre menu is great value. But the waiters are poor. Last time, they got my order wrong. This time the waiter knocked over a glass at an adjacent table which smashed on the floor."

  • "We really liked the ambience of the restaurant, very serene and beautiful. In hindsight, pretty empty--- probably because of tne ridiculous prices, the miniscule portions in relation to the price, the slightly friendly but pushy staff that "suggest" a little too eagerly.....and honestly, not the most interesting combinations of flavours......"

  • "Delicious food and attentive staff. When I confirmed our reservation I asked for a nice table for my husbands birthday and we were seated at the glass screen into the open kitchen which was very interesting. We had a wonderful meal and particularly enjoyed the 3 different types of tandoori chicken."

  • "Great service from the staff. The food is very, very expensive though."

  • "I have always liked this restaurant; it offers something a little different from the pre-starter to the desserts. The restaurant is stylish and elegant, and the menu follows a journey across India. It price is not cheap (we spent £170 for three of us - but that did include cocktails!), but the food is delicious and I will be going back !"

  • "We had the tasting menu with wine included in March 2014, at £70 a head for the vegetarian option. Although the food was ok, it wasn't brilliant - nothing was very unusual apart from the morel mushrooms, and you could get a lot better in many other central London Indian restaurants. With 3 small glasses of average wine, this is very bad value for money."

  • "went for a weekday lunch...had planned to get the tiffin set lunch to get a variety of food, but was told that the whole table would have to order it or we'd have to all go a la carte. disappointing, as we didn't see the reason why. if one person came in and wanted the tiffin lunch, wouldn't that be possible. the a la carte dishes were tasty, but pricy and very small in portions for the 16-24pound mark. overall, the service is very attentive and a lot of detail has gone into the restaurant, including the salad with spices that comes with the cover charge. but i wouldn't go again without a special deal because of the prices/portions ratio."

  • "Great food, but ask to sit upstairs or you'll be put downstairs which is plain and if you're unlucky next to a door to an office. Service good but sometimes slow. Food so good overcomes shortcomings - but with a bit more work this could be outstanding"

  • "Very nice atmosphere and interaction - food tasty and wonderfully served up with an understated elegance that makes clear they value you and they enjoy what they do - well done all round !"

  • "Came here on recommendation of a friend who had been to the main restaurant in Delhi. The waiters downstairs, where we were seated, didn't understand anything we were saying. Ordered two aperitifs which didn't arrive for 40 mins. We got our starters after an hour, still no sign of aperitifs. Asked again and the waiter just said oh they are upstairs, I have to get them. They finally arrived but the waitress had no idea what was what so disappeared again to check. We couldn't taste the drinks though as the food was so spicy. Main courses nothing exciting, was ill straight away. Called the manager and he told me that nobody else had complained! but he did take deduct the drinks and the prawns from our bill so that was something."

  • "I have tried all the amichelin starred restaurants in London and Mori Mahal is my favorite. The food- every single dish- is very tasty and the service is excellent. I will return soon."

  • "very fine indian food - very fresh and full of flavours"

  • "We went with friends for a Saturday evening dinner. The food is good and not overly expensive, wines are pricey but there are reasonable options. The main issue was that our waiter made suspicious mistakes to drive our consumption up. Also the, the timing of the dish delivery at the table wrong. Overall, the service spoiled the experience."

  • "Set meal was great and very good value. Only issue was that we requested a table upstairs as we prefer the ambience there but where allocated a table on the lower floor on arrival"

  • "I went in this restaurant around five years ago, and was and amazing dining experience, so I was looking forward to come back. First of all, after my booking, they call me three time for my credit card number ( I think it was quite rude); than they forgot to bring us the pre- starter, that was in the menu. The food was quite good, but the experience not."

  • "A revisit, having had a very good experience here last summer. We have enjoyed cooking recipes from the Trunk Road book and were looking forward to our visit. Food was good but not as good as before. Good traditional Indian food, not messed around with. Service was poor. Not only slow but the two waiters looking after downstairs did their best to avoid any work. I had to go up to them to ask for the bill. As we left, no-one asked if we had enjoyed the food. Seems they don't care any more."

  • "Excellent restaurant. Food was fantastic. The halibut was the winner, closely followed by the aubergine steak although all dishes were very good. Can recommend the flower mojito. We sat upstairs which had the right atmosphere. Downstairs seemed far too quiet but just maybe because there were not many people and felt sorry for the couple on the table right at the bottom of the stairs. Staff were very professional. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough."

  • "I went with 3 colleagues. Good flavours, and nice atmosphere. However, 2 problems with service - took a long time for food to arrive, and when it did arrive, the orders were a bit wrong. We ordered 2 chicken and 1 lamb. Got 2 lamb and 1 chicken. Didn't ask for it to be fixed, as we had waited some time for the food. Would go again, but confirm the order."

  • "Having viewed restaurant online and booked a table, we arrived for a pre-show meal only to be shown to a table downstairs where there was little ambience compared with the dining area upstairs. Diners on the table next to ours were given a fairly detailed explanation of the menu and help with selecting their meal whereas we were left to our own devices. When asked about one or two dishes, we were given some information about them but further information was not forthcoming.Sweet potato cake starter was not as flavoursome as hoped but chef's bread selection was really tasty. Overall, meal was disappointing in that the ambience of the room and anticipated flavours of Indian food previously enjoyed, sadly did not live up to expectation."

  • "Had a very pleasant evening at Moti Mahal with excellent food. Service was almost a little too attentive, with us being asked 4 times in as many minutes whether we would like a bottle of water. Would definitely go again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend."

  • "We went for a birthday celebration meal for my husband. We had a mohito cocktail to start, which was amazing - chilli & cumin made it a treat for the senses. We opted for the tasting menu with wines. We were not dissapointed. The food was excellent & wines well matched."

  • "We visited Moti Mahal for a team business dinner, expecting some of the best Indian food in London. Having ordered the "tasting" menu, we received some unremarkable but inoffensive starters, each of which came as sharing plates for the table followed by over an hours wait, then 2 main courses which my local Indian take-away could easily have bettered - tough, not especially flavourful wild boar and a solitary prawn each, served with a small portion of rice and some greasy and/or oddly sweet breads. Maybe Moti Mahal has a different interpretation of "tasting menu", but 3 sharing plates of starters followed by 2 sets of sharing main courses doesn't qualify in my book, and certainly not for an outrageous £450 for 6. Avoid at all costs."

  • "My second visit together with my friends and the standard of the food and service remains very good. Will come back."

  • "As it was my girlfriend's birthday, and she wished for an Indian restaurant, I booked Moti Mahal through toptable. Although Indian cuisine is not really what I go for at first, I felt that this restaurant was phenomenal. The food was delicious (we ordered the chicken tikka and a tandoori set with naan and rice), the service was great, and the atmosphere was very classy! I thoroughly enjoyed the "make your own salad" starter which every table received, it made it more enjoyable for the 2 of us. Also, we were given cappuccinos at the end of the night from the house which made it even better! The only downside was that it was quite pricey, although this might have been due to the fact that I am a student. I definitely recommend it."

  • "We dined late evening at Moti Mahal after a visit to the theatre. We were 10 minutes late, but the staff had us seated at our table very quickly. I couldn't fault the service which was fast and friendly at all times. We dined on the a la carte menu; Starters were small, the lamb biriyani and tiger prawns in coconut sauce dishes for mains. Both priced at £20 each & minuscule! Wine was a very decent half bottle of pinot noir, but priced at £27, it had to be!! I really wanted to enjoy MM, but I have to agree with previous reviewers - not worth the price. I have eaten (much, much more!) in better places for less. Wouldn't go back, I'm afraid."

  • "The small group of us thought we'd try somewhere different for our post Christmas curry and were recommended Moti Mohal. After initially falling off our seats at the prices our food arrived and we were all suitably impressed. The appetiser of raw vegetables sounds strange but with the spices and salt were excellent. The main courses too we're very good with some clever twists on the classic curry dishes. Would definitely recommend, but it's not cheap!"

  • "No prices on food or drinks menu! Nearly fell over when got the bill! £11for small glass house wine. Food good but not worth the price , have eaten in better for less. Wouldn't go back unless had good deal on."

  • "Delicious and refined indian food. If only the service was as refined. One waiter spilt our glass of wine, hardly apologised and didnt offer a replacement. One order went missing. With this quality of food, it s a real shame the front of house does reflect the talent in the kitchen. Disappointing."

  • "We really enjoyed the food at Moti Mahal. It was very tasty and didn't skimp on the spice too much to cater for hte western palette. Definitely recommend getting something from the tandor and the scallop start with crushed peas was absolutely lovely and cooked to perfection. I was origianlly tempted in with the £23 menu - however we didn't opt for this in the end as it didn't look very a[ppetising, so the meal turned out to be a quite a bit more than anticipated. Wouldn't pay this kind of price regularly for this quality of food but the kitchen is visible so you can watch the chefs work which is a nice treat for a special occasion."

  • "Me and my partner went to visit this restaurant for his birthday. I was very disappointed the food was not nice at all the minced lamb we had as a starter had a bad strong smell and was full of ghee the main currys were again a disappointment we ordered beef stir fry which was full of spice that wasn't burnt or cooked properly and I couldn't eat it and a hot lamb curry was boring tasteless the meat pieces were old not a fresh meat tasty curry. They also forgot to serve our side dish. I took a cake for him to cut and they charged us £7 so we had to pay to eat our own cake which was stupid. Overall the food and service was not wt I expected for a restaurant that are over priced. Lacks quality. It did not meet the standards."

  • "We had a beautiful dinner at Moti Mahal. It was my husband's birthday and so to celebrate we opted for the tasting menu. Everything we ate was delicious: from the popadoms and chutneys and the 'cut your own' salad to every course of the tasting menu. I was able to swap the wild boar aspect of the menu (I don't eat red meat) for chicken, which was delicious but my husband assured me the boar was very very tasty too. We ate like kings; unfortunately we were so full that we couldn't even think about pudding. The staff were helpful and friendly though not intrusive. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "This is a fabulous Indian restaurant serving well prepared and unusual dishes (most of which you won't find at your local restaurant). It is my favorite Indian restaurant - however, you have to pay for the privilege. The food is quite expensive and the waiters are well trained to 'up sell' things. Water? Yes? Flash and bottle is opened before the word 'tap' is out your mouth. For those with deep pockets and on special occasions though - this can't be beaten."

  • "The food here is extraordinary and should be tasted. The service, though friendly, could do with being sharpened up: we were told we were drinking a wine with the set menu which was not on the menu - it turned out the menu was right. And accents of all nationalities might be clearer. Great for a treat though!"

  • "Top quality food with an imaginative twist; the service was unobtrusive and very helpful - not at all what I expected from a typical Indian restaurant. Mind you, it wasn't a typical bill that I received! Expensive to visit often, but well worth it for a special occasion."
    dined on 18/12/2013
  • "We have been to the moti mahal on 4 occasions now and we were so disappointed with our food this time. We waited much longer than usual for our main meal and when it did arrive it was cold and very salty. We were there with two adults and two children and our bill was 256.00. They added their service charge and a 6.00 each sitting charge which we were not happy with. We will not return."
    dined on 14/12/2013
  • "Having read the reviews on this restaurant I was looking forward to an indian meal with a difference. What a disappointment. Bland "special" salad. Fried okra for starter - greasy and tasteless. Vegetarian main - absolutely tasteless. Poor service and even poorer food. "a journey along the indian trunk road" it was not, more like a strech of the A14 to Norwich - flat and forgettable."

  • "We had diner at moti mahal. Though we were a bit late, they had reservate a very nice table for us. the staff was very kind en helpfull. my dish was a bit too spicy for me and therefore they made a new dish for me which was delicious! the food was very good and we never eat indian food like this! if we come back to London we will certainly eat here!"
