A word from Mon Plaisir
For more than half a century, a little piece of the capital has been proudly French too - Mon Plaisir restaurant on Covent Garden’s Monmouth Street is famous as London’s longest-serving French restaurant. Is it romantic? Well, dozens, maybe hundreds, of marriage proposals have taken place here as well as countless first dates, third dates and anniversary celebrations. Acquired by the Viala brothers in the 1940s, Mon Plaisir has gone from strength to strength, entertaining a who’s who of London society with its uniquely French charm. Four rooms with different looks make up Mon Plaisir – from the main dining room, unchanged since the 40’s, to the lounge with its pewter-topped bar rescued from a Lyonnais brothel. From the utterly traditional, to the conceptual and modern, Mon Plaisir restaurant’s French menu explores in depth France’s world-famous cuisine with a panache more often seen on the streets of Paris.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Authentic French food, nice decorations and very friendly services."

  • "Lovely lunchtime experience. Lunch menu great value. Service excellent and atmosphere so French."

  • "One of those places that's been there so long, you tend to take it for granted. Established in Monmouth Street for decades, I've used this restaurant a lot during my thirty years in London, but it had been a while since my last visit. We booked a Friday night table for a celebration dinner and had an outstanding evening, excellent, classically inspired French cooking, with charming, friendly service and a laid back, 'buzzy' ambience - thoroughly recommended for a good night out, we're planning on returning soon. Plus, you can still do the shadow trick with their sugar containers..."

  • "High quality food, beautifully cooked, served in a timely fashion, amid a wonderful environment. Eating at its absolute best."

  • "Mon Plaisir has all the best qualities of a traditional French restaurant. The food is excellent and the set meals are very good value for money. Service is attentive and unobtrusive and, as in all really good restaurants, the house wine is really nice."

  • "Excellent food. Delightful restaurant, with friendly staff. At times service was a little slow - but I guess very French! We had eaten at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant the previous night for more than double cost & not as good service or food! I would highly recommend Mon Plaisir."

  • "Dined at mon plaisir before seeing the commitments at the cambridge theatre, the pre theatre menu was excellent, we all enjoyed our different dishes from the short but excellent menu, looking at the full menu, helped us to agree to return at a future date for dinner, that says it all"

  • "We went for a pre-theatre lunch on a Saturday. We were the only customers until about 1.15, which might be expected for a Saturday lunchtime in London but having 4 waiters hovering was quite off-putting. The daily set menu looked distinctly average so we went for the menu of the month - better options but food wasn't very impressive. 'Warm' goats cheese salad was cold; lamb came with cold 'chips' which were vile; sea bass and chicken were good, and puddings were nice. A la carte menu is ridiculously overpriced, especially when you're clearly not paying for the atmosphere. Overall not my best toptable booking."

  • "I have been dining at MP for nearly 50 years. When my office was in Covent Garden and later in Smithfield it was always my favourite restaurant.I have held 2 major dinners there and have always had the best of french food and wine. The owner is always there with a friendly greetn and now his daughter is continuing a great tradition.I still feel i have visited Paris when I leave!"

  • "Best value French restaurant in the West End by far. Another great meal thank you."

  • "We have only used the restaurant for pre-theater dinners but can thoroughly recommend it. Excellent food, wine and service."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "I specifically asked, when i booked, for a table in the back. This wasn't offered. A moustachioed Frenchman on the table behind us, clearly a regular, spent some time shouting into his mobile phone. When he wasn't on the phone he spoke very loudly. My friend has hearing problems and found it difficult to concentrate with this noise going on. I found it really unpleasant. The service was good and the food fine for a prix fixe menu. But having promised the friend a really nice experience of French restauration what we got, one way and another, was a feeling of being in a club of which we were emphatically not members. I have been coming to Mon Plaisir on and off for years and always really liked it. This was no fun at all. A pity."

  • "Always love it at Mon Plaisir. We use it for pre theatre meals as it is within walking distance of most of the theatres and the food and service is excellent. The attention to detail is exceptional, and we always feel as if we have been made to feel special. Thoroughly recommend it, especially if you like good French food and being spoilt."

  • "Sitting in a different room this time, Good food as usual, a nice place to spend a lunchtime. WC"

  • "My wife and I have been visiting Mon Plaisir on and off for thirty years, and it has never failed to please. It is delightfully intimate. We use it to treat ourselves. It is not cheap, but the food represents excellent French cooking, and the service is attentive without being obsequious. We recommend it highly."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "This was overall a disappointing experience as the food was undercooked, the port had not been properly decanted and had bits in it, and the waiter service was below par."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Mon Plaisir provided the perfect pre-theatre dinner. Efficient, friendly service, good traditional French food and a quiet ambience. Highly recommended"
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "We had a delicious meal at the restaurant which was just enough without overfilling ourselves prior to a show. We selected from the pre theatre menu rather than the a la carte (which was more expensive). If there for a meal other than pre theatre the menu looked extensive and interesting. Service was prompt which meant we didn't feel anxious about our time keeping. A good choice all round."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "The great attraction of Mon Plaisir is that it sticks determinedly to offering a traditional French dining experience - from the classic dishes to the white tablecloths. Service is unobtrusive but attentive and the house wines are very nice."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "Met for lunch with two other business executives. The service was very friendly, prompt and discreet and the food was, as usual, excellent."
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "Mon Plaisir is as good as it always was. It's still very French in its quality and simple excellence- a great combination of old faithfuls (the snails, the steaks, the terrines, the soups, the tarts) with a varied choice of imaginative new dishes,. All our dishes were beautifully cooked and generously garnished. The service was impeccable. I asked about the house white by the glass and was immediately invited it to taste it. Impressive! Bread and water still come as a matter of course. The set menus were interesting and very good value. It was great to have two differently priced options - a French practice which more London restaurants should think of adopting. Pity we could only have lunch - wish we could have gone back for dinner!"
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "We come to Mon Plaisir for lunch because it is a convenient location. The food is average for this kind of restaurant. We did not eat from the cheapest set lunch menu so there are many cheaper places. The main course came only with a garnish so vegetables have to be ordered separately. OK for what it is, but not remarkable."
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "Once again a superb meal. Regularly used for pre theatre but this visit after 7.30 was with friends. All four of us could not fault our meals. A real gem"
    dined on 19/03/2014
  • "How lovely to re- discover this hidden treasure. It's not a big restaurant, but wow the food is divine. I and my friends did not stray far from Menu du Mois, but it was all excellent. Beautifully presented, wonderful flavour, superb service. We also have wine in a small carafe (50 cl), but of such lovely quality. Traditionally French food, severed elegantly and with flair. We had a delightful lunch, at a really reasonable price."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "This is a piece of traditional France in the heart of London. Fantastic ambience with food to match. It really is a delightful little restaurant, well worth a visit."

  • "Mon Plaisir offers the very best in both service and culinary expertise. I would have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant unreservedly - - and have already done so."

  • "We had the set lunch options. Excellent portions, good ingredients and well prepared dishes. Attentive, responsive service."
    dined on 13/03/2014
  • "Very good meal and top class service. Very impressed when we asked if we could have a half portion of a main course as a starter and slightly altered for my 84 year old father in law this was not a problem. Back again next year for father in law's next birthday, God willing...."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "Friday evening dining. Not too crowded and easy to hear table conversation. Pleasant, unobtrusive waiter; excellent French food (and french people eating there - always a good sign!). Will definately go back."
    dined on 07/03/2014
  • "Mon Plaisir has been the same since the 60s: a good quality, attractive French restaurant with excellent food. It's not cheap, though the lunch menu is good value. No gimmicks, no background music, just a good meal."
    dined on 06/03/2014
  • "We have been going to Mon Plaisir for a pre theatre dinner for years. The service is good and the food is good value. Unfortunately since the last time we went they have stopped giving a glass of wine with the deal, so that was a disappointment. I liked the red house wine we bought so went on to the internet to see where I could buy if from. I can buy it for just over £5 a bottle, they charge £19. So my point is for 4 people it would cost them £1,25 to give a glass free!"

  • "The blade of beef was the best dish I've eaten in years! And I've been to some pretty smart restaurants. The main course was delicious: the beef was meltingly tender and the sauce unctuous. If I hadn't been full, I could have eaten the whole dish again."

  • "Another superb meal. Beautiful food and excellent service.definately our favourite London restaurant"
    dined on 26/02/2014
  • "I went there to experience a traditional French meal and was not disappointed. I invited my old friend and she liked it too, even though she is sophisticated and demanding. Interesting decor, subtle music, real French guy serving us. A perfect place to have a bit of conversation over dinner. Food very tasty. We ordered the cheapest wine and it was excellent. Practically anybody can afford to go there although it is up to you how expensive the meal is going to be. Love that feeling of egalite!"
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "loved the atmosphere, very friendly staff. Starters o k the steak thinly sliced but still tough to cut. pudding nice but not enough of it ! The starters onion tart quite soggy, and there only seems to be chips with everything, house wine not too bad!! would not go again, which is a shame because the ambience was great!!"
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "Lovely small "intimate" rooms, courteous, friendly and helpful service, good, varied a la carte menu, slightly pricey but with fixed priced lunch options. We will definitely eat there again - dinner next time. On reflection, not sure why I haven't marked it higher!"
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Service was impeccable and very fast. Made a pre-theatre meal seem special and not rushed. Food was delicious. Will definitely revisit."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "Went there on Saturday to celebrate my birthday. My second visit to the restaurant after a gap of 3 months. The staff serving us even remembered me (proof : She knew where I was seated the last time). Fantastic food, accompaniments. Decent choice of wines. The staff sang in French as my dessert was served with a candle! Very touched. Bill including food, 3 glasses of champagne, a bottle of white wine, desserts and tips about GBP 165 for 3 persons. We did not order starters, but only the main course and desserts. Perfect birthday celebration."
