Matsuri St James's is based in the heart of Mayfair, offering a wide variety of Japanese food from authentic to innovative. Using top quality ingredients we create a beautiful harmony including teppanyaki - a cooking style in which a chef cooks in front of you. The Sushi bar is very popular among Japanese expatriates as they recognise the same quality as they eat in Japan.

Diner Reviews
  • "It is a fun place to have lunch or dinner with your colleagues from the office, however it is slightly overpriced. You know the quality of the food it is going very good and your pocket will notice it. I specially recommend the soft shell crab, it is really good. Hiroshima sake it is also outstanding. Hopefully will go again soon."

  • "Having dined there many times last year (2013) I would say that there has been a slight decline overall in both food quality and service. This is possibly due to staff turnover as there seemed to be very few personnel there now which were there last year. This is not what you would necessarily expect from such an eating establishment. Overall I was sad to note the decline as it spoiled the dining experience and did not quite live up to my expectations which had been built up from my previous experiences last year."

  • "Ordered the eel lunch set, the eel was way too salty and so was the side dish of tuna. I've been here several times in the past few months and it's been consistently too salty. Colleague ordered the aubergine and tempura set and found it really salty too. I'm a regular customer and I don't recall things being this salty a year ago, perhaps they have a new chef now?"

  • "Great food. Loved the £65 set menu - tried a mixture of new things and firm favourites. I have been before and will go again. Selina"

  • "Fantastic Venue and authentic Japanese cuisine. I chose Matsuri for wife's birthday as she is native to Japan but essentially based upon our previous good experiences of this restaurant. The staff and management were very accomodating with regard to our 14 month old daughter and took our picture, printed it and gave it to us on the spot. 1st class Teppan Yaki - my wife had the sea food and I had the 300g steak. Thank you Matsuri"

  • "I'm impressed and Matsuri did served His Late Majesty, The King of Tonga During one His Late Majesty's visit to London. I would highly recommend this place for special VIP dinners"

  • "As usual the whole experience was a delight - this time we had each dish paired with a different sake"

  • "It is nice to find a peaceful corner within the hustle and bustle of London where you can enjoy a relaxed lunch sampling the eclectic flavours of Japanese cooking. I have been going to Matsuri for the past 16 years and on different occasions. Recently I had lunch there and enjoyed the Bento Box for £25 which is presented in a two layered lacquer box with an assortment of Sashimi,Sushi and pickles which included Miso Soup. Lunch is good value. For first timers I would suggest trying one of the course menus or sets from £15.00, Fish Set, £17.00 Mixed Tempura set and Matsuri Deluxe Bento Box £35.00. Dinner is more expensive especially if you add wine. I would suggest drinking Sake with your meal to complement the food or Japanese beer."

  • "We had been here more than once before and it was better. They used to bring you a little entreè, we took fillet and lobster and there usually were two sauces for it while this time only one came. Instead of different teppaniaky veg they gave us veg cooked in a pan that weren't so good. Furtermore it is nice to have a Japanese cook not an european cook pretending to be a teppaniaky cook."

  • "I went there with my friends and we all loved it.Really nice food! And very nice service. We had the set menu.We thought it was a bit expensive but really worth it. The lobster tail and black cod were delicious and the fire ball ice cream was quite fun to watch it."

  • "One of the few places in central London that has always served and still continues to serve proper Japanese food (never mind their short-lived second branch in Holborn, this place remains good). The shop's main selling point is the "Teppan Yaki" but sushi, tempura, and other dishes on the menu are equally good, if not better. If you do go for "Teppan Yaki", be prepared to emerge very smelly afterwards, so don't wear your glad rags!"

  • "A wonderful venue to celebrate my sons 16th birthday with family and friends, all the staff were very friendly, knowledgable and Austin the Tepan chef was incredibly engaging, producing fine food."

  • "Always a great experience. First time I had taken young children and they loved it and were very well looked after. Pricey although you get what you pay for."

  • "Way too expensive for the food which is just decent. No wow effect at all but price tag implies double wow... Very attentive service though!"

  • "Really enjoyed our meal at Matsuri. Food is excellent, but the service is inconsistent. Also thought the cost of the meal was expensive in comparison to other Asian Michelin star restaurants, but it's a good restaurant for group bookings."

  • "Been going to Matsuri for 10 years, always enjoyed the food, which has been top-notch ! In the past their service had been hit and miss. Finally service has been improved to match the food quality. The waitress at sushi bar is very intuitive and attentive, she answered our questions about the menu, we felt very comfortable under her care. Will go back again, waiting for their loyalty card."

  • "Fantastic Food and Great ambience. I would only criticise that the fire ice ball ice-cream is more of a gimmick as opposed to a proper dessert. (in short mango with ice-cream... Nothing special)"
    dined on 20/02/2014
  • "The service was prompt and continuous, from the moment you arrive you are lead to your seats, the waitress arrives with an apron which you need due to the splash back from the cooking. Food was amazing, we would have liked more vegetarian options. Miso Soup was delicious and the fireball mango and ice cream is magnificent to eat as well as eye catching to watch as it's created! Have your camera ready! Lobster and black cod were cooked to perfection. What makes this special is the experience, watching the skillful chefs at work. The staff are friendly and our waiter modified the dishes to suit our dietary requirements. Perfect as a family outing or dinner for two."

  • "What an amazing anniversary dinner we had at Matsuri, in St James. We arrived late but they still held our table. We were made to feel very welcome. I loved the surroundings. The fact that you see some of your food being cooked in front of you. We went for the set menu, which was amazing. I tasted food I would never normally go for. It was all AMAZINGLY tasty food. I strongly recommend the miso soup which was served in the little tea pot. The black cod and lobster totally sold me. Also had the sashimi which was totally tantalising. All the favours throughout my whole meal all worked perfectly well. The only downside is it's not a cheap place to eat, but for our anniversary dinner, totally worth every penny."

  • "Matsuri St. James was a great evening out, with excellent service and even better quality of food. Must recommend the black cod! Waiters and chefs were very attentive of our needs, and our waiter was very helpful in choosing and explaining the dishes to us. A little pricey, but for the quality of food and service, I would say that it was worth the money and would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "What a fantastic find in London! Amazing quality for sushi/sashimi in Mayfair. The sushi bar is quiet, cozy and the food fresh and well prepared. Service is attentive and gracious. We're looking forward to going back to try the tepanyaki."

  • "Excellent service at the sushi bar for a quick business lunch...food was very well prepared and the discreetness of the downstairs dining rooms (sushi, teppan-yaki) made the meal feel more cozy and we didn't need to shout to be heard. Great value for lunch and I would definitely return."

  • "I took a customer and 2 colleagues to Matsuri. The food was excellent - we had the set menu. you get to pick an option for starter and option for main (fish or meat). the main course is cooked for you by the Chef at the Teppanyaki Table and Austin our Chef was both excellent and we felt 'made' the whole dining experience with his personality. I would recommend, but it is pricy and one for a group, as the experience really makes this place. the decor and entrance is slightly dated for a restaurant of this type in my view. But food wise we couldn't fault."
    dined on 08/01/2014
  • "Very warm welcoming from staff at street level. Little bar offers a nice selection of drinks before being led down to restaurant level below. The TeppanYaki display is a good attraction from all the chefs doing their little tricks and performances. Food is quite pricey though."

  • "Awesome place with great Japanese food. It's always a pleasure to visit Matsuri when I am in London. The service is great. The waiters are always there to serve, with a smile of course. The food is exceptional. I have to say it is authentic. A nice place for dinner. Great for hangouts."

  • "Had the Matsuri Set menu (£65 per person) and had the Sommelier match the food with wines (£35 per person). All aspects of the meal were brilliant, but I've highlighted my favourite parts below Before the chef came out to cook our main in front of us, the sommelier gave us a choice of different wines to accompany it - after tasting we opted for a Landgedoc grenache, which was unbelievable. Then the chef came out and cooked our main in front of us, entertaining us as he cooked, and served the lobster+ ginger cod, which truly melted in the mouth. For desert we had the fireball ice-cream which is a tradition at matsuri, and is a sight to behold. The hungarian desert wine along side was a fantastic extra touch."

  • "Went on Christmas Eve and the restaurant was 80% full. Buzzy atmosphere and the most charming and attentive staff you could wish for. Set menu options are very limited and the bill does add up quickly - food at least £50pp and probably closer to £100. Wine list is eclectic, surprisingly good value and very well represented and there's a very helpful sommelier too. All the starters were good except the tempura, which was dull but the new beef Galancian starter was superb. We didn't have any sushi but the quail, the lobster and the steak was outstanding. Great night out and so much better than Benihana but 30% more."

  • "The place is very cozy and accommodating. There is a very warm feel to the restaurant which makes you feel at ease. The staff is very efficient and friendly making you feel right at home. The food is very fresh and the chefs are amazing at how the prepare it. It is a nice place to go with friends and family but also a place for a business lunch or dinner. The tepanyaki is a most try and so is the flaming mango ice cream. Will go back often as its one of the best restaurants value for money I have found in London especially seeing where it is located."

  • "One of the top restaurants in London. Never fails to deliver on a magical dining experience. The staff are efficient and friendly. The food is exquisite and perfect for family, business or romantic occasions!"

  • "Tried this place following a recommendations by Japanese colleague. Cooking in front of us was a great experience and the food was excellent. Only point to note is drinks are expensive, when added to the service charge this became a costly trip. I would repeat and fully recommend but just be aware of the cost!"

  • "This was my 8th visit at this restaurant over a 5 year period... Unfortunately the restaurant seems to get more and more popular and busy ... and has not much time left for good and coordinated service. The set menu is very high price, but the quality of food does not keep up with this standard. I do not want to say it is not good, but it used to be quite a bit better with more reasonable prices in the past. The most disappointing part was the cook.... no more interacting with the guest, as it used to be... just cooking to get it done... not much passion in what was done... The desert highlight Fireball ice cream... I have had this desert every time when visiting, but never seen this been done with fast food attitude like this time..."

  • "Went for the Aoi set meal, which takes about 80 minutes, and was without a doubt the best Tepanyaki I've experienced in London. The service was personable and attentive,, and the food was above excellent (a particular favorite being the Lobster head miso soup). Prices start to stack up when you add in a few drinks that in my opinion are overpriced for what they were - but that's to be expected in Mayfair. Excellent food, excellent atmosphere, outstanding service. Would love to go again, but i'll have to save up a bit first."

  • "We had a great time at Matsuri, I have been looking for a restaurant for my wife's birthday and when I saw that they make the food at your table, I was quite excitied. She enjoyed it and the experience was great, a bit of a show really The food and service was excellent. Definitely good for a special occasion."

  • "I've been to Matsuri several times and really enjoy the Teppanyaki style. This last time was very busy and the service was extremely slow - three hours from start to finish. Needless to say we were very hungry when the food finally came, and it was as good as usual thankfully. It won't put me off going again, but they need to up their game a bit for the service next time, especially as they add 12.5% for it."
    dined on 16/11/2013
  • "Overall the service was not up to the standard of the "image" this restaurant would like to portray. There was little knowledge of the range of Sake's on the wine list but thankfully having lived in Japan we could make our own choice. The food was OK but I have experienced better quality Japanese food elsewhere in London....."

  • "The overall service is very good. High quality in the food served (we took the Deluxe Seafood). We had also great service and very good explanations from the 'Maître sommelier') about the wine taken ( A Chablis Premier Cru). All the staff was very kind and provided a high level attention to all our party. We appreciated very much this dinner. I shall recommand this restaurant which I think is in the very top level."
