A word from Mari Vanna
Situated in the heart of Knightsbridge, Mari Vanna, home of the mythical Russian matriarch, bids you a warm welcome to her London outpost for a home-cooked meal and a cosy retreat.
Specialising in “babushka cooking”, the menu is replete with Russian dishes and influences from the former Soviet countries of Georgia, Ukraine and also offers an extensive selection of salads and lighter dishes displaying a liberal use of fresh herbs. Its generous and exquisite selection of tea-time treats, cakes and infusions, meanwhile, is hard to resist, and available throughout the day.
With extraordinary attention to detail, Mari Vanna transports each guest into the Russian home of a bygone era where shelves are adorned with matryoshka dolls, trinkets and tchotchke. Displaying true Russian tradition from top to toe, Mari Vanna is a rare find in London.

Initially opened in a private apartment in St Petersburg, Mari Vanna has sister restaurants in Moscow and New York.

  • "If you want to sample authentic home-style Russian food, set in a quaint memorabilia filled restaurant then you won't be disappointed."

  • "I am happy to come back over and over again. Great food, outlandish ambiance. Just perfect place to dine with friends, or in couple."

  • "I've been going to Mari Vanna got year as now (in different country). It's always like the first time - love everything about the restaurant"
    dined on 12/04/2014
  • "The food was good, tasty, homemade. Very tasty. As a foreigner I react to the aburd cost of soft drinks, pute water and plan black tea. Also the VAT is added to prices AND service is added to the liking of the restaurant. Mari Vanna is a cosy restaurant and waiters are waiting upon you. We were 2 guests and experienced 4 different waiters during our lunch. I think the pricing policy is a drawback."

  • "We had a lovely dinner last Friday at Mari Vanna. We had Borscht to start with, two pirogis and then Siberian Pimeni for main and we ended our russian experience with the Honey Cake. All of them were delicious, the waiter was very polite and the decoration was out of this world. Would definitely go back in the future."

  • "Has the £32 afternoon tea deal. Thought this was v good value- you get a three tiered stand with the bottom tier savoury and the top two sweet. The savoury food was nicely different from a traditional afternoon tea eg blini with caviar, however I would caution that there is quite a bit of fish involved so it might not be great if you're not a fish eater. The sweet section was v tasty- only criticism was that each of the two tiers only held one type of cake on each, not a nice little selection of different cakes, so there wasn't much variety. Décor was lovely, although there was a big stain on my chair- surprising since they had obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the decoration as a whole- shame to slip up on the little things."

  • "A lovely restaurant with lots of character from entrance, dining areas to lavatories Food was delicious Service attentive We did not have to wait long after making our requests"

  • "When I think of the countless times I've sauntered past this little eatery... which added all the more to my delighted surprise, when I stepped inside for the first time. Imagine being in a cosy cottage, shaded lamps, ornaments, chandeliers, flowers. The wonderful, authentic, Russian food it's just perfect. The menu comprises all the Russian national favourites, the staff are helpful and the whole experience is much recommended."

  • "I booked for my friends & I to have a special Russian dinner. It would be impossible for Mari Vanna to disappoint in terms of the venue, food and service. Venue - This special place is filled in almost every corner with something authentic, inquisitive, charming and lovely - You are in for a visual treat here. Food - all authentic and authentically themed Russian food. The seasoning was on point as were the flavours. Clean, hearty and interesting. Service - friendly, helpful and full of smiles. They also do not interrupt mid-bite. I had the Pierogi's, moorish! The Pelmeni, was delicious and the Honey Cake was better than I imagined. Table turning is the only thing stopping this from being a 5 star review."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "We had a nice experience in the restaurant, with friendly service (not blaming us for coming three persons instead of six/seven promised). We were placed in a nice area and serviced very well compared to other London restaurants. The food is a bit pricey but it tastes good and worth it. However, two of us had ... severe food poisoning following the visit (either by pelmeni or meat pies)... I had visited the place several times before, and it was always up-to-the-mark. Not this time, unfortunately."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Never going back, it was abysmal. Food was just disgusting and service was miserable. An aeroplane crash would have been a happier sight to look at than the waitress, who couldn't speak very good English."
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "We had such an amazing experience. Everything was very nice, will definitely come back again."

  • "Indeed it was a love story. ...I celebrated with my wife 7 years of marriage and we take the dinner in Mari Vanna restaurant. The food was excellent, service excellent, every thing like in a romantic story. Thank you very much for magical amazing experience ."

  • "Special food, special ambiance and special service."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "From the moment you enter, you're transported to a Russian dacha, full of memorabilia, trinkets, and music to match. The Russian speaking staff are very attentive - service is quick and efficient without being intrusive. All the traditional hallmarks are on the menu. Pirogi to start are light, full of flavour and have a choice of fillings to suit all tastes. Borsht is nicely spiced, with perfectly done meat and sweet, crisp veg. The pelmeni especially are excellent, and I also strongly recommend the Napoleon cake (to share, as it's quite large for one person after all the above). Overall, it was a great experience for a special occasion, and I will definitely be returning there as soon as I can."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "I loved Mari Varna, the decor even in the toilets, the detail is amazing. It was like dinner on a soviet era film set. The menu choice is varied with classic Russian soups, salads, mains and a few desserts. Expect to pay around £45 per head without drinks, add some wine and its more like £65 per head, so for me this is a great interesting restaurant for special occasions when I don't mind paying a premium."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "Delightful setting, worth a visit to see the decor.Food interesting, staff helpful in explaining the menu. A delightful experience although food not really to my taste."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "This is a unique small eating establishment with authentic Russian food and atmosphere. Staff are friendly and the food excellent. My only issue is that it is very expensive. But great for a special occasion or if on expenses."
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "Nice décor and cosy tea room. Food is better than expected although the menu needs a lot of explanation as one cannot read or pronounce all the Russian names. Afternoon tea with toptable deal is very good value considering within Knightsbridge area. For those who want to splash out, there is a Faberge Vodka limited edition for 3200 pounds plus VAT and service..:)"

  • "My Wife is ethnically Russian and we had been looking forward to visiting Mari Vanna for some time. It was worth the wait! We chose the afternoon Set Menu - two courses for £18. I had a starter of Borsch and a main of Pelmeni, whilst my Wife had a main of Salmon & Pancakes and a dessert of Honeycake. Every dish was superb. The presentation and the taste were exquisite. We'd also been supplied with a generous selection of bread before the food arrived. The ambience and decor were lovely - very cosy and authentically Russian. The staff were all well presented and pleasant. I can't recommend Mari Vanna highly enough. I just wish we lived in London so we could visit every week!"
    dined on 23/01/2014
  • "Amazing place. However the waitresses should learn to be more discret with removing empty plates from the table. Why to reach and lean over the table, if she can easily scoop the empty glass from another side? While we had a exciting gosssiping with my friends, the waitress interrupted us ... It was the second visit there. I'm guessing I have to accept that waitresses are rude. waiters are much better there. Waiters smile!"
    dined on 21/01/2014
  • "I ordered the afternoon tea deal through TopTable, but we had quite a bit of confusion with the server. Even though the deal was for 2-6 people, the server insisted that she couldn't serve a tea for 3 people. Additionally, we weren't given a choice on the type of tea we could order. I was really looking forward to trying something other than English Breakfast (kind of the reason I went to a Russian, not English, restaurant), but before I could even ask what type of tea was available I had a pot of English Breakfast on my table. I also had to convince the server that cocktails were included with the tea I had ordered. In the end, the food was delicious and the decor was fantastic. Even with the mixups, the service was very friendly."

  • "My wife loves the food. She says it reminds her of home. We've been going once every 1-2 months since it opened in London. Over the last few visits (2014 now) I've noticed the service decreasing. Tonight I decided to talk with the manager (privately). Reception was rude over us being a few minutes late. There was only one waitress for 8 tables of people. Service was Painfully slow, where you feel you need to order 3-4 drinks ahead because you don't know when you might get another chance. When we were leaving I decided to talk to the manager. When I calmly explained the night. Her response was that I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't work here... After a few minutes of discussion I realised I can't fix "stupid" and left."

  • "This is the place! Outstanding interior, and the toilet impressed greatly! Good service and good food."

  • "Went to Mari vanna definitely recommend for an adventure if you are not Russian. If you are Russian the. It's quite authentic feeling, original dishes , Russian staff and clientele! Bill took forever to come and same with payment being taken but staff are genuine lovely And helpful"
    dined on 12/01/2014
  • "You could forget that you were eating in London - the dining area is like a Russian parlour. We were the only diners not speaking Russian - but don't let that put you off. The food is good and authentic - not for every day, but great for something different. Service is attentive, but authentically slow - not a place for a hurried meal. Visit the Russian church round the corner in Ennismore Gardens before you eat, to get you in the mood."
    dined on 08/01/2014
  • "Beautiful deco! I did not know where to look first. My eyes couldn't stop! I felt like chameleon.. Vey expensive, for special occasions only. Genuine big portions. I found Olivier salad too runny and too much sausage in it. However Dumplings with potato and mushroom filling- Ukrainian culinary masterpiece, served with tartar sauce were cooked to PERFECTION. Napoleon cake was great. Must try Beluga vodka! Very busy, busy, busy place, we had a gentle reminder from a waitress that in 10 min our 2 hour booking slot will end. On general- the experience- Thumbs Up!"
    dined on 29/12/2013
  • "If you want to feel out of time, out of reach in a quiet, warm and cosy environment, with great food....This is the place."
    dined on 28/12/2013
  • "The food was really good. Portions sizes are enough. The decoration of the restaurant is different. Nice place!!"
    dined on 22/12/2013
  • "It was my first time in this restaurant and definitely intend to go back. The inside decoration reflects the type of restaurant. Food great, I especially liked Napoleon as a dessert. Worth going there if you want to have a nice meal."
    dined on 22/12/2013
  • "We had an afternoon tea at Mari Vanna, which was a good value for money however I didn't like the champagne cocktail and certain savoury food weren't to my liking. The little cakes were very delicious . I don't think I will be back any time soon"
    dined on 17/12/2013
  • "First time dining at this restaurant is a little daunting, recommendations from the waitresses would've been helpful. Overall though a very pleasant evening was had."
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "We found the people very friendly, service was unusual having your plate cleared whilst other continued eating. Food was ok, some items looked very tempting whilst others was bland. Great setting and glad we went but probably will not rush back. Value was what to expect for this location."
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "Such a lovely venue, with really different food and our afternoon tea was fab. Not at all traditional though but the fish lovers amongst us thought it was an ace spread! We did have to wait quite a while for our table, but the long wait was rewarded with a vodka shot on the house."
    dined on 30/11/2013
  • "My starter/bread plate was abruptly taken away while I was still eating. The service charge was very high, we had no choice but to pay it. The food from the lunch set menu was ok. Maybe this place is better for a girl-y afternoon tea."
    dined on 12/12/2013
  • "We visited Sunday lunchtime 1330-1500. My wife is Russian and vouched for the authenticity. The food tastes right and connected with her childhood memories. Ambience cosy and civilised with just right amount of buzz without being noisy. Service authentic too - efficient and uncomplicated. Would recommend especially for anyone looking for good Russian experience in London."
