You need to fight your way passed the top end of the market and clothes rails but then you find a calm pleasant space. I especially liked the video log fire. The three course Sunday lunch was excellent - good choice for every course but the beef won out for mains. Slightly surprised the waitress seemed unfamiliar with horseradish sauce, but it arrived OK. Saturday evenings used to be quiet, however there was a buzzing ambience during our visit.
Every food element was excellent. The steaks (rib) were mouth wateringly tasty and cooked to perfection, the smoked salmon starter was the best smoked salmon I have had for some time, even the side orders were fabulous! The dessert wine recommendation to accompany the creme brûlée was perfect.

I had prawn cocktail and it was the best prawn cocktail I've tasted with king prawns. She had the Fra Gras and the flavors were on the spot, the only downer was that it didn't come with enough toasted bread.
For mains I had the 10oz Ribeye steak cooked medium and it was divine. She had pork with beans in a brown sauce. Very tasty and the skin on the pork was cooked till crispy. Again the dish did not come with enough sauce so we ordered more.
Lastly for desert I had the Vanilla Panncotta and she had the Creme Brulee, it was perfect because by that course we were both full and the deserts were very nice and light.

The onion rings are a must - they have a really crunchy coating and just delicious. We all picked different desserts so we could try them all - all equally yummy. I didn't need to be! I booked at 6:30 table on a Friday. We had an excellent time. Nice room, friendly staff the only small mistake was they put red wine in the white wine glass but the wine was so lovely I could forgive that :-). The half price main course made it good value especially for the person paying the bill!

Service was great as waiters arrived when required and at no other time. At no time did we feel rushed or harassed. The place was quiet and we could talk without shouting. We gladly paid the tip portion of the bill. It cost just over what it would cost for 2 people on the a la carte. 3 of us shared one bottle of wine and one of us had a beer. Starter & main courses were good (soup, rabbit, asparagus, pork belly, calves' liver, fish & chips). Creme Brulee was renamed Cambridge Burnt Cream!! Pannacotta was not light enough.
