Diner Reviews
  • "Having lunch here twice I really enjoyed it on both occasions. I was pleasantly surprised by the food as the portions were small but still filling.Waiter/ess service was very good with not too much interuption. Ambience was perfect for our discussions"

  • "We booked Magdalen at the last minute on a Friday night, purely based on the very positive reviews and we weren't disappointed. The service was very friendly not too much attention but enough and always with a smile. The food was very good and we would definitely go back."

  • "We paid £60 for a shared steak with a colleague of mine. We had requested to the waitress that we would like the Steak to be cooked 'Well Done' only for the waitress to come back to us and say that it is cooked to about a 'Medium'. We said we didn't like to eat bloody steak and we reiterated that we would like to eat this without seeing any blood. The Steak turned up with blood inside and my colleague ate some of it with her eyes closed whilst I applied it with the sauce that had accompanied it. Surely, if you are paying £60 to eat Steak, it should be how you would like to eat it. At the end of the day, it was me who was paying and me who was eating it - not the Chef or the waitress. What is the problem! Just to keep Magdalen's Chef happy!"

  • "Magdalen is a beautiful restaurant, it was quite quiet when we arrived but this was to be expected as we are early at 7pm. Had a very good red wine - the setting just felt perfect. We had some olives and chopped kid on toast as nibbles - both great. I had hot smoked salmon on a potato pancake that was so good I didn't want it to end. I had roast kid with mash for main that was cooked fantastically and tasted amazing. Some madelines with honey and fromage blanc were beautiful, although a little burnt. All in all a wonderful meal in a great setting. Not cheap, but not bad value either, at about £140 for 3 courses, a bottle of wine and service."

  • "Lovely restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. Helpful, friendly staff who attended to our needs. Good place for a business lunch. Would definitely come here again."

  • "Small friendly restaurant with tasty food. Interesting choice on the menu and nicely presented with enticing flavours. Not cheap but would say acceptable for what is delivered. They have an offer in May so would say I would definitely return to enjoy the food again and take advantage of good value."

  • "Booked at the very last minute on a busy Friday and was surprised to get a table and very glad we did. Food was great, menu varied and so interesting dishes. Squid with beans was packed with flavour. The shoulder blade was cooked to perfection and the fish stew was cleverly constructed with properly (just) poached fish in a saffron base. Well worth the visit and would go again"

  • "Visited early on a friday evening for a birthday meal - this was my third visit to Madelen and it was fantastic as always. Excellent service, great wine recommendations and delicious food."

  • "We have been eating at Magdalen since Fay Mashler's first review and have always been pleased. This time we had Burmese friends visiting the UK for the first time and wanted to show them good modern Brit food after their generosity on our recent visit to Yangon. The menu is still very interesting and almost anything would be my choice, although our Burmese friends were a bit out of their depth. They are used to a cuisine that has similarity to Thai and Hunnan and Indian, i.e. lots of bold flavours, all served at the same time in meals without a clear structure, and were not sure how to interpret what was on offer. However, the delightful waitress was very helpful and the food turned out fine, with lots of swapping."

  • "All the food was delicious. However, the braised deer that one of our number ordered was a really tiny portion - about one tablespoon of v. small pieces of meat and gravy. When I pointed this out to the waitress she told me that small portions were normal at this restaurant - the implication was that I didn't understand that this is posh dining rather than fill your boots grub. The other meals we ordered were fine. This was a mid-week and a bit businessy for us."

  • "Had a lovely meal here for my husband's birthday. Quite expensive so definitely only a restaurant for special occasions. The food was lovely and the menu different and varied. The staff were very friendly. Good wine list - again quite pricey. My husband has not stopped talking about the "pigs head" starter he ate!"

  • "Delicious deer dish and lovely desserts as well as excellent service. Absolutely loved the place and would definitely return to it."

  • "Wonderful experience on Saturday night at this beautiful little gem of restaurant. The food was outstanding but what made the visit so great was the waiter, he was so tentative to everyone, knew the menu, the specials in detail, explained each one in detail and with real passion for the quality and how it would taste. Our visit was a belated birthday and they all made it special with the extra little touches. Overall food outstanding but service especially (I think his name is Chris) was best we have ever experienced. Will definitely recommend, especially after the visit to The Shard, perfect ending to a nice day.. Thank you"

  • "An old favourite that seems to be on top form at the moment. Not afraid to offer offal so tonight tried brain and sweetbread. Both excellent. There is a good choice of dishes and everyone should find something to their taste. The wine list is comprehensive and the Saumur-Champigny was excellent. Staff very pleasant and not noisy or burdened by background music. Absolutely nothing not to like!"

  • "Superb food. The smoked salmon starter was do flavoursome yet delicate. The kid liver was delicious although a little beyond pink and the very best selection of cheeses I've had in some time. Attentive and informative service."

  • "There is something in this place that makes you come back again and again. Exceptional in any way."

  • "It may not be in the best location, and from the outside doesn't grab your attention, but once inside, this restaurant is a real hidden gem. Slightly off the Tower Bridge main tourist drag but so close to wander by afteward, this restaurant is delightful. The menu is varied, yet not overwhelming, the staff extremely know their stuff, the wine list a little too expensive for the location but good, and the ambience pleasing and welcoming! Portions are humble so it's no gastronomic feast, but the food is fresh, well-constructed and flavoursome. Most definately worth a visit!! We'll be going back, and at just under a 5 minute walk from London Bridge station, it's a winner!"

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here. I had the rabbit terrine to start with which was excellent but the best bit was my main course - the venison pie! This was amazing! Definitely eat this if you go here. The service was good and our waiter was very polite and helpful."

  • "We had a table on Saturday night. The restaurant wasn't that busy but it had sold out of steak, changed the pork dish and the mixed offal was now just liver (not a good start as the menu isn't huge to begin with) Our waiter barely spoke to us all evening and we had to wave to get his attention. When food arrived it was promptly plonked in front of us and then he disappeared again Whilst the food was nice (crab salad - complete with a few bits of shell, fish stew, brisket) it wasn't amazing or different to anything we could get in our local gastropub for less money (our bill including wine came to over £75 per person) so we wouldn't recommend this restaurant to friends"

  • "We come often, because Magdalen is consistently wonderful. On entering, you feel as if you're in a cozy neighborhood place, but the sourcing of ingredients, the cooking, and the service make it one of the great unsung restaurants in all of London. It's also quiet enough, by design, that even when the room is packed you can still have a good conversation."

  • "Great restaurant, a hidden gem. A bit furthur up Tooley Street than many would venture, but well worth it. Great food particularly and I'm a tough critic. Some of the best duck I've come across in London."

  • "I had dinner at Magdalen last friday for the 2nd time in a few weeks and loved it as much as the first time. The menu was completely different which is great eventhough I was a bit sad not to be able to taste the French toast, well it just means I will have to go again :) Lovely restaurant which I recommend to all my friends and collegues, fantastic food, very friendly service, the wine list is absolutely fabulous as well with such a large range, everyone can find what they want. I will go back for sure!"

  • "This is about my 4th time dining at Magdalen and it never disappoints. I went there with 6 friends to celebrate my 40 birthday. Amazing food, lovely atmosphere, great company, good service. Nothing to fault and I will be back."

  • "Just couple of pieces of toast to start, but absolutely sensational - one with anchovy and freshly boiled agg, and the other with a rough cut tapenade. Delicious - I could live off them. My starter was a little dull but that was my fault, the lamb to follow - excellent. A nice Cote di Bourg, which really opened up as the evening went on."

  • "Magdalen is always fantastic. I never seem to get away from sharing a pie though. This time it was venison and semolina. Utterly delicious. If you haven't been and like hearty carnivorous fare, then Magdalen's is for you."

  • "We booked for Valentines night as it is one of my girlfriends favorite restaurants and is great for a special occasion. It is a really nice room, however it seemed as if the tables had been placed closer together than normal in order to accommodate more diners but I would have preferred a bit more space as I was not particularly interested in the adjacent tables conversation! The food was great, especially the main course. We had the fillet of Beef. The only disappointment was that this cost a supplement of £10 PP and had to be for 2 so this added £20 to the bill. As it was a set menu already costing £50 per head without wine I do feel that adding this extra charge to most appealing choice is a bit cheeky and would be nicer if avoided."

  • "Magdalen is in a lovely location and the staff were brilliant. However, food was just not too our liking - limited choices for starter, stringy beef for main and the dessert was pretty bland. The best part of the meal was the wine, I'm afraid."
    dined on 15/02/2014
  • "Went here for Valentine's, a suitably impressive experience. Food wasn't the best I'd ever tasted but very good. Great wine and nice unobtrusive service. Price was a little steep - but it was Valentine's!"

  • "Couldn't be happier with the whole experience. I booked here as we came from the Shard nearby on a very wet and windy valentines evening. The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. The starter was excellent, as was the dessert but I thought the highlight was the main course we had which was roast beef with béarnaise sauce, potato cake and spinach. I couldn't be more satisfied, the beef was amazingly tender, the potato cake was beautifully crispy and the spinach was just perfect. The waitress who was very attentive throughout recommend a brilliant wine which completed the meal perfectly. Overall couldn't ask for more. The place had great ambience, very romantic, and the food was top class! I'll definitely be back!"

  • "This is a gem. Couldn't fault the food or service in any way. The menu has a classical French basis with an occasional modern European twist and mostly English-sourced ingredients. From the kir royales to the coffee, nothing was ever less than excellent sometimes sensational and all at a reasonable price. The wine list is interesting and strives to be eclectic; it needs some attention but you'd struggle not to find something that suits with help from the friendly serving staff. Will definitely be going again."

  • "Went on valentines day so expected it to be a little pricier than normal, but for £50 a head was a little underwhelming"

  • "I love Magdelen. It is clean and attractive. The food is always excellent. To start we had smoked salmon on a potato pancake and it was extremely tasty though, even more delicious than this was the Devon Crab salad which was exquisite. The main courses are largely meaty and I do not eat meat but there is always a fish and vegetarian dish available. My cod was gorgeous - cooked to perfection. The wine list is extensive and affordable."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Went for valentines so not completely representative of a normal evening meal but they did a great job of it. There was a bit of a premium in the set menu price which was understandable but a nice range of choices and each dish was very well put together. For main we shared a venison pie which was fantastic and not something you see too often! Service was immaculate from arrival to departure, despite being an understandably busy night.. Would certainly go again, either as a couple or in a group."

  • "This restaurant has a great atmosphere, lovely food, and good service. The food is good quality and tastes fine. The best part of the meal was the artichoke soup - superb. In general, don't expert heavily spiced food here - the taste is more natural and subtle."
