L'EtrangerL'EtrangerExcellent value set menu delicious food and friendly helpful service, a delight14/06/2013 00:00:00Imaginative food, great ambienceDon't miss this place, The service is attentive, professional, intelligent yet welcoming in a way I find uniques in London. The japanese style foie gras is to die for as is the beet root and goat cheese. The sashimi is much more consistently high quality than some well known Japanese restaurants. Presentation is lovely - almost too beautiful to eat. Leave room for the tatin or have something chocolate...08/06/2013 00:00:00Lived up to billing as one of bestVery friendly staff who engaged like familiar friends.02/06/2013 00:00:00Enjoyed the delicious earlyEnjoyed the delicious early bird set menu at L'Etranger with two girlfriends thoroughly enjoyable evening - l look forward to going back there again soon23/05/2013 00:00:00Toptable offerA good offer of 4 courses and a glass of Moet for £38. Excellent food and service, very good fusion of east and west.
Wine list is pricey with not enough choice at lower end.14/05/2013 00:00:00Birthday Celebration BrunchThoroughly enjoyed a birthday celebration brunch with excellent food and service and a great wine list and choice12/05/2013 00:00:00A quiet LunchTwo excellent courses for under £20 is good value at L'Etranger. The Wine by the glass was also high quality. The Albarino being particularly good. Pea soup followed by beef was easliy sufficient for lunchtime.
We will return.08/05/2013 00:00:00L'EtrangerWe like it here (third visit) and their set lunch on Sunday was really very good indeed but for those of us who go to restaurants quite regularly and not just as a treat, it would be nice to have a few more affordable bottles of wine - a truly impressive list of some magnificent wines but only two bottles under £30, I think, and not many more under £40. The charming sommelier helped us to a choice of 8 wines by the glass, recited rather than written down, but these equated to £48 a bottle so where we each had two glasses I would have been much happier with a more extensive cheaper end, albeit we may have drunk more than many would consider advisable. However this an observation that applies to many London restaurants these days.05/05/2013 00:00:00The food is good - but itThe food is good - but it comes with an air of pretenion in the decor and service and a price tag to match. The wine list is, perhaps not surprisingly, overwhelmingly French and has very little for under three figures per bottle.23/04/2013 00:00:00Amazing foodOnce again the quality of the food and presentation at L'Etranger was superb. Truly special - we love it.
However, they need to sort out their toilets as these are shared with the nightclub downstairs which leads to a less than delightful experience (that's putting it nicely). That may be ok in a gastropub but not in a restaurant of £100/head upwards for dinner. It spoils an otherwise top class experience. Needs sorting.29/03/2013 00:00:00ExcellentEverything we got was excellent. The food was really good and the service did match the food.
I would say the very best of the evening was the John Dory which I recommend to try.
If I really have to split hairs I would say they offer chopsticks which have nothing to do with the traditional Japanese ones.
My wife who is Japanese, did find handling these chopsticks very difficult.
Japanese chopstick are very light and thin the ones we got had a metal end which makes them very awkward to use.28/03/2013 00:00:00L'etrangerFranco-Japanese chic elegance with charming staff and a quirky sommelier. Modern and cool. Handy bar. Memorable.22/03/2013 00:00:002nd time aroundSadly, I did not particularly enjoy my main course of veal chop but I think this is more to it being a bad choice on my part than the fault of the kitchen. To put this in perspective, during the meal my wife opined that this must be the best restaurant that we have ever eaten in. When we next book a weekend in London we will plan to return!22/03/2013 00:00:00A quiet LunchThe blend of Japan and France in the cooking at L'Etranger always provides something different in the flavour profiles of the foods. The wines by the glass are all excellent but the champagne at £16.50 is over the top. 2 champagnes one at 11 and the ruinat at 16.50 would be OK.18/03/2013 00:00:00Great, but expensiveL'Entranger used to be a regular of ours, when we lived nearby but they used to do a 50% off deal on toptable. As their popularity grew, this reduced to 25% off and now nothing. The food is great, as is service. I like the atmosphere although my wife thinks it a little sterile. Overall, I really like this place, but without the discount, it is an expensive meal.15/03/2013 00:00:00My boyfriend and I enjoyedMy boyfriend and I enjoyed a beautiful meal from the brunch menu. The staff were very friendly and the overall experience was excellent.09/03/2013 00:00:00A quiet lunchWe had the set lunch menu at L'Etranger good value at £21 for 3 courses. Cauliflower veloute, confit of beef and green tea cream brulee plus an excellent red burgundy from Ladriox.
We will return27/02/2013 00:00:00France meets JapanGorgeous venue with delicious food. The service is excellent. Romantic evening post theatre with my husband. We return several times a year to this fantastic venue.03/02/2013 00:00:00A quite lunchAnother good lunch at L'Etranger. Their new set lunch menu of 2 courses for £19.50 and 3 for £21 was interesting and varied. My cauliflower veloute was excellent, followed by beautifully cooked salmon with a cold passion flower souflee as dessert. Good wines by the glass.30/01/2013 00:00:00All round fantastic experienceIt was our first visit to the L'Etranger and we were not dissappointed. The food as absolutely fantastic - from presentation to taste - something really special. The choice of vine was a little mind boggling - the wine card is as thick as a novel - so picking the wine was a little tricky although the price tags helped there as it was all on the pricey side.
It was an all round fantastic experience and I am sure we will go again.25/01/2013 16:00:00Delicious food, and a diverseDelicious food, and a diverse menu selection. It was well-prepared, well seasoned, and nicely presented. The portions are more generous than I expected, so a three course meal is filling. The service was excellent. This is definitely a place I would return to with friends, and for my meal, I got excellent value for money.29/12/2012 00:00:00L'Etranger's my favourite book......and restaurant. I love this place. It feels like home every time I go back. The service is perfect. The food is stunning. And the restaurant has one of the best wine lists in London. We had a 1993 Chateau Chasse-Spleen and it was absolutely to die for...ok, maybe two bottles. One of the most memorable wines / meals of my life.11/12/2012 00:00:00Quite and classy lunchQuail followed by L'Etranger's own version of fish and chips proved to be excellent choices for a quite lunch. The sommelier's recommendations of wines was excellent. The wine by the glass list is being overhauled.
We will go again for this excellent value 2 course lunch.26/09/2012 00:00:00first timeit was my first time at l'etranger. The food was delicious and the service impeccable. It's a bit cuisine moderne so very tasty but not big quantities. you've been warned. nonetheless, i would highly recommended this restaurant.14/08/2012 16:00:00Excellent food & very good valueBy choosing the "Summer Menu" which had plenty of choices & included 2 glasses of very good wine per person, this was an absolute bargain for the wonderful food that this restaurant prepares. Will certainly be coming here again.02/08/2012 00:00:00A good lunch venueL'Etranger is now excellent value at under £20 for a 2 course lunch. French / Japanese chefs combined to produce really different dishes. Their version of fish and chips must be the best in town. The quail starter was tender and tasty. A good selection of wines by the glass. We will go again.27/06/2012 00:00:00Light LunchAn excellent lunch with best take on fish and chips ever. Small pieces of Salmon, Squid and Sea Bass fried in an excellent tempura dip with properly cooked small chips with 3 different dipping sauces plus pickled ginger - a real triumph!!
At 3 courses for £21 L'Etranger is excellent value.06/06/2012 00:00:00Always an interesting menuAlways an interesting menu and the quality of food and of presentation is excellent. The wine list prices are rather eye-watering - they could usefully include a few more choices at below £90 bottle. Clearly remains as popular as ever.21/04/2012 00:00:00The restaurant was ratherThe restaurant was rather empty on a Friday night. We went for dinner following a friends recommendation. The food mix of Japanese and French is quite special and the food was really delicious. Service was good as well. Unfortunately the restaurant is expensive, not only the food, but also the drinks. Would recommend but only for a special occassion.06/04/2012 00:00:00L'Etranger in Gloucester RoadL'Etranger in Gloucester Road was eerily empty when we went for lunch on our second visit. We ate from the astonishingly good-value fixed price although I paid a supplement for a smoked salmon crepe parmentiere which turned out to be a rather disappointing stodgy number. The meal was redeemed however by their take on fish and chips, tempura covered pieces of squid, salmon and sea-bass, which was simply delicious. I will go back for that alone.15/02/2012 16:00:00Lovely restaurant in a greatLovely restaurant in a great setting. Amazing wine list with an incredibly knowledgable sommelier. Quite pricey but i guess that's down to the location and exclusivity of the venue. Well worth trying28/10/2011 00:00:00
