A word from L'Escargot
Set in the heart of Soho L’Escargot, established in 1927, is London’s oldest French restaurant. It has been host to stars of stage and screen including Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, John Geilgud, Ralph Richardson, and was reputedly one of Princess Diana’s favourites.
Now under the new ownership of Brian Clivaz and Laurence Isaacson, who between them, have been involved in some of London’s most iconic restaurants. Oliver Lešnik , formally of The Connaught and The Cadogan Hotel, heads up the kitchen. Snails unsurprisingly are the speciality of the house; the dining room pays homage to proper French bourgeois cooking and offers exceptional value. L’Escargot has been voted London’s best French restaurant and has an excellent wine list.

Diner Reviews
  • "I used to eat a lot at L'Escargot, but went off it when it became a bit starchy and impersonal. I was pleasantly surprised by lunch there recently: the food is good, as you would expect, but the service was warm as well as professional and the ambience was enjoyable - a haven in busy Soho. I'll be back."

  • "This was our 3'rd visit to L'Escargot, and we had another fine evening at the cozy restaurant. The food, wine and service is excellent, and were looking forward to come back."

  • "A lovely way to spend a monday night in london. The food and ambience was very good. I thought that our waiters could have been a little more attentive ."

  • "This was our second trip to L'Escargot the first being to celebrate a 30th birthday with 11 people. Both times the staff were very attentive and made every effort to make our evening enjoyable. The food on both occasions was good and flavoursome. Will definitely be going again to try out the pre theatre menu, which looked very good value for money. Only down side the ladies toilets are on the first floor which at the moment is being redesigned. However we were informed that this is to be rectified and they are moving downstairs."

  • "Apart from an initial first smell of paint due to ongoing decoration work the ambiance of the restaurant was very welcoming and the table layout very acceptable. The service was excellent as was the food. All in all a very enjoyable evening our only regret was that we could not spend more time over such an enjoyable meal due to a theatre booking."

  • "the food is excellent- and the lociation is very good in the center of London - Good service - Not a great ambiance - the restaurant was rather empty only 3 tables were occupied."

  • "Friends birthday meant lunch on Mother's Day which meant the menu was called Mother's Day lunch but even so the menu was interesting. The service was very good, efficient but still friendly. Food a good selection making choice difficult and vowing to go back to try other options. Top table booking meant a free bottle of wine - even better!"

  • "Whilst walking true London we stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant. It has great atmosphere, great food, great service, cute waiters will return very soon! Highly recommended!"

  • "Memorable lunch with our family of 5. Complimentary Glas of Chamagne along with the free bottle of LP offer. Special menu offered typically french choices, great food and service and location"

  • "Excellent service, bill very reasonable, complimentary wine was easily drinkable. They ran out of lobster which was a shame but everything else was great (flip side is at least you know it was fresh that day!). Was very relaxed, no rushing (1430 on a Sunday although we arrived early) busy enough to have a nice atmosphere but not compromise service. All round I would definitely go back!"

  • "Great service and good ambience. Unfortunately good was not great and we are foodies. Enjoyed the night as we were with friends but can't say Id recommend it."

  • "Didn't have enough steaks for our group (first choice) and then didn't have enough steaks for our second choice! At 20:30! After ordering our 3rd option on the menu the steaks even though the cooking was good, the meat was very chewy. We ended up not eating half our food. To their credit, they removed 2 steaks off the bill. We were a party of 6."

  • "bit of a shame the table d'hote menu has disappeared though"

  • "My wife & I have been visiting l'Escargot for about 15 years, our favourite Special Occasion restaurant and a veritable oasis in the West End buzz. On Thursday for a pre-theatre dinner, we were sadly disappointed. Firstly, on entering the dining room we turned left, yes left for the first time ever. But it's not like air travel, this wasn't Club/First accommodation. So the gloriouss area to the right is no longer available for early evening diners it seems. The pre-theatre menu was spartan compared to previously so we felt we had no option but to plump for the full á la carte menu. The food was no better than OK. The standard, slightly nouveau cuisine fare has been replaced by larger portions, mine swimming in butter. Farewell mon vieux"

  • "Went for our anniversary. This was a perfect place with fantastic foor. It has a lovely interior with interesting art. I would highly recommand it."

  • "I have been wanting to go to L'Escargot for years and it seemed the perfect midpoint for catching up with family on Monday 24 March. The added lure of a free bottle of wine through Toptable helped. Outcome: The food was very good indeed; the service highly attentive and good mannered. I felt the whole experience to be remarkably good value thanks to the TT offer. However, I would seriously question going on a Monday evening. Only a few other tables were occupied and the place had no particular ambience about it at all. The decoration is old and dated, becoming all the more obvious because of the overwhelming sense of the place being empty. I'm sure this would have been a great experience, but on a Thursday next time, perhaps."

  • "We visited for Sunday lunch - turned out to be the first time the new owners had opened for this. Great 'traditional' French menu + very English roast beef offerings. Bargain whole lobster and chips for £18 ! Great service. Owners have exciting plans for refurbishment but the downstairs rooms still retain the old L'Escargot atmosphere and style."

  • "It was the first day that L'Escargot had ever opened for Sunday lunch and they made a great job of it. Would recommend it for that, without a doubt."

  • "Hadn't realised that the restaurant had recently changed hands but equally good, in fact excellent, meal. Really happy that it is now open for Saturday lunch."

  • "Ambience was great, my girlfriend was super impressed we were going here. The food was amazing and the service attentive. I also didn't think it was too expensive which is unusual for this kind of restaurant."

  • "Plus ca change. L'Escargot has endured numerous changes of management over the years, yet remains true to its basic "offering",French bourgeois food. There is nothing adventurous on the menu. It is standard high end brasserie stuff. Lobster bisque. Salade Nicoise. Snails. Etc. But, by offering dishes that any foodie is bound to have eaten elsewhere, it makes it easier to rate the food. And it is good. It is not too pricey, either. Moreover, L'Escargot serves veal, a rara avis in British restaurants. Ours was delicious. The service was distinctly French and proficient. Moreover, there were table cloths, items eschewed by the new wave of London restaurants. Note to management: the doors of the wardrobe in the vestibule need fixing."

  • "First time back to L'Escargot in around 15 years but read good things about the new management. We were on the free champagne promotion so overall value was very good. The food has certainly improved from that of my memory though I would not say it matches the best that Soho can offer in this price range. The big let down was the service, which, while friendly and apparently helpful, was all over the place. We were given the wrong menus, they mislaid our half full bottle of champagne and had run out of one of the plat du jour main courses."

  • "Didn't know what to expect of this classic London restaurant but the interior, the staff and the attention to fantastic flavourt was exceptional. Can't wait to go back. The complimentary bottle of white was very good."

  • "We had dinner here last Friday and could not really fault the place. The food was good and the service excellent. I believe the room itself is shortly to be refurbished but is perfectly pleasant as it stands. The only minor blemish was that our choice of digestif was temporarily unavailable, but the this was more than adequately compensated for by a free (and very smooth) grappa. MA"

  • "About time that this old classic restaurant in soho has been given a shot in the arm as it now has new management. The food was excellent and service friendly and very efficient. Stunning building that will only get better."

  • "I chose L'Escargot to celebrate our 25th Anniversary and am glad I did so. The restaurant is in the heart of Soho, easy to reach, easy to find. The greeting was warm, service good (attentive but unobtrusive) and the menu was extensive (please ignore the menu on the web - that is out of date). The art on the walls added to a feeling that the restaurant was great for romance/special occasions. The bill came to £145 for two (two starters, two lobster main courses, water, one glass of wine, desserts and coffees) and was very good value for the food and the setting."

  • "Had a pleasant evening. Have not been here for ages. Friendly service. Very comfortable. Not at all rushed. Had two courses: trio of terrines and the sea bass with very nice fried courgettes. Did not pay, so cannot comment on value, but the wine list had a reasonable spread of prices and the individual course prices looked about average for a restaurant of this type. Would go again."

  • "I liked the genuine French food and the outstanding service. For its location (Soho), the place has very good value. The atmosphere is rather formal but allows for relatively casual dining thanks to the very professional waiters who do not push for over-consumption. All dishes were very good, with good portions. The wine menu offers enough affordable options, though prices can go up to hundreds of pounds for some very rare bottles."

  • "Having booked on line in good time for Valentine's Day (and having checked for any indication of a restricted menu on that day) I was a little nettled to discover on arriving that there was no alternative to a rather limited special menu. There was, however, just enough choice for us both to find something we liked. The food and service, as always, were very good and the jazz band added to the sense of occasion without being overpowering."

  • "As I was looking for a dinner place for a friend and me, I saw L'Escargot. I had not been in years and decided to give it a go. The welcome and service were impeccable. Our waiter was very friendly, if not always totally knowledgeable but each time he went and got the answers when he did not have it. The food was superb, with delicious white asparagus with a hollandaise sauce. The desserts were also amazing and we managed to polish three of these! The decor still looks good, but one massive issue: the bathrooms need a total refit and a sorting out of the smells. Too bad"
