  • "I took my Austrian wife to this restaurant (one of the very few (only?) Austrian restaurants in London) as part of her birthday present. The restaurant itself is smart and the waiting staff very good. The food was also good except for my kaiserschmarren (pancakes) which unfortunately were doughy and burnt; to be honest I should have sent them back."

  • "I loved the ambience and the head of the staff was also very friendly. The cauliflower soup was fantastic and deserts were also great. It's a very cozy and relaxed kind of place. Would definitely go back for an afternoon cup of tea again."

  • "Kipferl offers a very decent sample of Austrian food at a good price. I've been before for breakfast (order the fried bread!), and supper is as pleasant an experience. My starter of smoked salmon with cucumber, garlic and dill sauce is both rich and light, though the garlic is but a hint in the background. As a main I order krautspaetzle, cooked in a skillet under a substantial inch of organic mountain cheese - pure dairy indulgence, not for the faint hearted! Dessert is apricot pancakes with ice cream and whipped cream, and while I was expecting fresh apricots pressed in pastry, unfortunately the dessert is made with jam. Don't leave, however, without a little bag of Kipferls to take home as a souvenier - tiny curls of vanilla shortbread."

  • "I've been to Kipferl once before and really enjoyed my breakfast so decided to take Mum as a treat when she was visiting. I know how busy it can be so booked in advance, though they do their best to accommodate non-bookers. The decor is a lovely, understated, modern Austrian/Viennese feel. There is a pair of vintage skis in the corner and I love the newspapers on hooks. I chose the Organic Mountain Cheese Omelette with rocket, walnuts and rye bread which was absolutely delicious! Mum had French Toast 'Holzhacker' Style with crispy Austrian bacon which she too thoroughly enjoyed. We had freshly squeezed orange juice, a melange and a soy latte to finish. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and I will definitely be back again :)"

  • "You know when you do something simple & really enjoy it then wonder why you don't do it all the time? That's how I feel about a Kiperl breakfast, my friend & I decided to make it our weekly meet up; brunch then a light cultural excursion. Lovely food, gracious staff & an authentic feel to the restaurant. The menu contains the history of the dishes which makes them sound so much more delicious."

  • "Lovely little place, understated but elegant interior. The food is great and authentic and the service is attentive without being intrusive. I went for dinner which was perfect and would definitely consider brunch or just nipping in for a great coffee and cake. Worth a visit."

  • "A very good little find in Angel. Leans towards being slightly expensive (£10 for the 'Viennese Breakfast', consisting of bread, jam, ham and cheese) but ingredients are high quality so not a massive complaint... Also, that price was offset by excellent value Austrian tarts and fantastic coffees. Service was friendly and attentive too. Great ambiance."

  • "Kipferl is the place where I go when I need a warm place, a great bowl of soup, a lovely friendly face, a fantastic comforting meal... It is wonderful. I had no idea Austrian food could be that good. The menu never really changes. But it's good at what it does."

  • "Went for a late lunch on Saturday and both my friend and I enjoyed our mains and dessert very much. Fantastic apple strudel! My only complaint is the ladies' restroom: the tap wasn't working at all so there was no way of washing one's hands, and the restroom needed more regular day-to-day maintenance. ."

  • "I really enjoyed visiting Kipferl. The service was nice and there was a pleasant atmosphere. Coffee was served with a small chocolate and glass of water, which was a nice touch and I think the water and coffee is an Austrian thing. I had the French toast 'Holzhacker' style with Austrian bacon which was okay, but the portion size could have been slightly bigger and it was too dry so either the bread should have been left to soak up the egg more or adding maple syrup to it. There are quite a few appealing things on the menu, and other people's food and cake looked delicious, i will definitely be returning!"

  • "Been the Kipferl a few times and always happy with my meal and visit. Recently visited on a Sunday afternoon rather than a weekday evening. As expected it was much busier but we had a great meal and dessert as always. I always order one of the sausages with a side salad dish however I plan to tackle one of their mains for my next visit. Staff are also great and attentive.. especially the cute guy with the dark hair ; )"

  • "The boiled beef starter was bland. I made the exact thing myself at home the next day in 6 seconds. Beef slices (from the supermarket cooked meat section) and lettuce. Avoid ordering this."

  • "We weren't sure what to expect from Austrain food, but were impressed with the standard of food on offer. We each had a starter and a main, and shared a cheese board to finish, and the food was delicious throughout. High-quality ingredients, excellent flavour combinations, appealing presentation, and attentive service. The Austrian wine was excellent too. We both had meaty dishes (the beef goulash with homemade egg noodles and the pork medallions wrapped in bacon and served with peppered cabbage) but we noticed that the vegetarian options also looked appealing and interesting. There was nothing to fault in our experience, and I'd recommend Kipferl to anyone."

  • "Great Austrian cafe serving Austrian staples such as Schnitzel or Käsespätzle. The decor is wonderful - simple and warm (a lot of wood), one of those places where you feel at ease instantly. The service is excellent. Great find on Camden Passage!"

  • "This was our second visit and on both times we were all impressed with the meals and desserts. My Austrian born mother feels it is difficult to find good authentic Austrian food outside of Austria but Kipferl provides it perfectly."

  • "Delicious Austrian food beautifully cooked.Chicken snitszel moist, tender, and crisp on the outside. The best new potatoes that I have ever tasted. How did they cook them? My son loved the goulash with proper saurkraut. House wine extremely good. The gentleman who served us was incredibly helpful. Will return."

  • "The staff were charming and attentive - seemed to know when to leave us alone and when to come back to the table. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I had a cheese and meat platter that was very generous and well-judged. The apple strudel really excellent and the coffee good too. Even though the restaurant was full, it wasn't difficult to have a conversation: noise levels were fine. I reserved a table for lunch on a week day. Would advise that as the restaurant was busy. Lovely oasis in the middle of Upper Street Xmas mayhem."

  • "This is a safe bet. I have been going for almost 2 years now and have never been disappointed. Very nice team, typical delicious food. Few tips / comments: - book beforehand, it is a successful small place - they close early - the drinks list is on the small side"

  • "This is a great little place. Nicely laid out in a minimalist but friendly style, very efficient service and excellent food. Will definitely be back soon."

  • "A little treasure of a place tucked away along Canden Passage ... Very small though as tables quite close together - but that said would happily eat there again and again ...loved it!!" The food was of a high standard and not too expensive."

  • "My friend loves everything German and Austrian and I took her here for a birthday treat. Thank goodness I booked the place was packed and there was a long queue too. Food was hearty and wonderful with very generous portions. We both ordered soup and for mains I order the goulash with noodles and my friend ordered the schnitzel. The cakes are a must. We'll defnitely be returning some time soon whether it's for breakfast lunch or dinner. Nice modern atmosphere. Staff were informative and friendly and we were not rushed despite queues at the door."

  • "Superb food, superb ambient, superb service to make a very pleasurable experience. The Schnitzel is simply awesome. I cannot recommend Kipferl more."

  • "Booked for an evening meal at 8:45pm. Service was friendly and the menu has a small but good range of evening meals and daily specials. We were particularly looking forward to Kaiserschmarrn for desert. Wine was expensive but good quality. Starter and main course were good. We came to order desert to be told that the kitchen had closed. In fact it closes at 9:30 (so the chef can leave on time at 10pm). Rubbish and extremely bad service not to tell us or have this clearly displayed in the restaurant or on the menus. A very disappointing end to the evening."

  • "Excellent Wiener Schnitzel and beef Goulasch, accompanied by delicious salads."

  • "Had the most amazing meal and service at Kipferl - would highly recommend this restaurant for Austro/German food lovers! The schnitzel and spatsle were amazing, but it really was the service we received that made it stand out as one of the best evenings we have had in London!"
    dined on 14/08/2013
  • "As always an enjoyable meal with memories of visits to Austria. The desert and cake menus make choosing particularly difficult, although a look at the cake display can help. Service, as always, was attentive but low key. A very civilised dining experience. A note of warning, be careful of the finely grated horseradish, it has a serious kick!"
    dined on 13/08/2013
  • "The food was not too expensive compared to other restaurants around town. The service was really good with a really friendly and calm waitress. The food had really good quality which is not necessarily a common thing in London when you eat at posh places."

  • "Lovely restaurant with amazing food and service. Perfect for couples and groups of 4."

  • "We went for lunch on our anniversary, starting with a bowl of liver dumpling soup (very tasty), followed by us both having sausages and rye bread with a selection of salads (sliced cucumber, grated carrot, potato, horseradish - all good, would liked a tiny bit more of each!), accompanied by a great organic rye beer. My wife was initially drawn to Kipferl after googling for good places in London for cakes/desserts, so we tried three with our coffees: an espresso-soaked chocolate & almond cake (deliciously moist), a wonderfully stodgy thick, shredded pancake with raisins & hot morello cherries that nearly bested us, and a superlative pumpkin seed parfait. Nice staff and very enjoyable lunch. We'll definitely go back to try dinner there."

  • "Kipferl looks like a great café with its coffees and cakes. We were less sure of it as a restaurant but it worked out well with a table at a balcony; great on a hot day. Portions are big, so big we had no room for a sweet. A fish starter was very fresh although the sauce with it lacked the bite that was promised. The diced veal main dish was good and the salad complemented it well. The schnitzel was good too but the salad had too much of the same that was with the dish, especially potatoes. Stick to the white wine or beer! Staff were very friendly and service was good despite the place filling up rapidly."
