Diner Reviews
  • "Had been here once before for Valentines and really enjoyed it. This time we went on a Sunday nght. They were not that busy and we got the impression they wanted to shut fairly early. The starters were lovely. However, the mains arrived wthin a few minutes of us finishing the starters which was too quick. The mains of veal and beef bourbignon were a bit of a let down. The latter was better in Cafe Rouge! We wanted a longish break before dessert but were asked several times if we wanted to order. The desserts were good. All in all, would not visit again on a Sunday. In fact, not sure if we would rush back at all."

  • "We booked a table at Kettner's for mid-evening as we were attending a function in a private room earlier. We ran late - and then later (we weren't the only ones) - but the staff were unfazed. The surroundings were charming and although I think the noise levels in the bar area might have been a problem, the restaurant was better. We struggled a little with the 'all day brasserie' menu as we really only wanted something reasonably light and our menu was definitely 'dining' but there is a pre- and post-theatre menu if the timing is right. Our waiter was helpful, friendly and efficient and the food good if unremarkable and we didn't need the wine list. PS Their plumbing needs attention!!!"

  • "I hadn't been to Kettners for a long time and had forgotten how good this place was (they've been around a long time so maybe this is why). It's quite a classy place despite serving food that isn't that upscale - you can get a steak and fries if you like albeit a well-prepared steak. I found the vegetarian options lacking however and had to eat a risotto (which is a staple veggie option on most menus). It was very nice however. Would probably go back just because it's a nice place but not so much for the veggie food!"

  • "I hadn't been to Kettner's since I lived in London 15 years ago and I reckon it's gone up at least notch or two. I remember it being a louche, laid back kind of place where they did a kind of glorified Pizza Express menu (very glorified...) while a bloke tinkled on the piano in the background but it's much more than that now. We had cocktails and an excellent pre-theatre meal (not chosen from the theatre menu) and everything was very good. I had a goat's cheese souffle type thing with crushed hazelnuts and beetroot marmalade to start (delicious) followed by very nicely cooked sea bass. The cocktails were good, the wine was excellent and our service was amazingly attentive considering how busy they were. Overall, definitely recommended."

  • "Wheelchair user in party. Staff very helpful but toilet not easily accessible, space too small and steps to negotiate. Lovely restaurant for pre-theatre dinner, within walking distance of theatres. Pre-theatre dinner menu was good value. Would recommend but not ideal for wheelchair user. Very interesting history to restaurant, one of the oldest in London."

  • "We visited Kettners after a west end matinee. On arrival we went into the bar for drinks where the service was excellent and even though the cocktails we requested were not on the menu they were made for us. The service in the restaurant was just as good as the bar. I had the pre/post theatre menu and my husband chose from the main menu. Both meals were very good. We would use this restaurant again especially as it had a good atmosphere even early evening when we went."

  • "Great place to eat! Front of house a bit chaotic but don't let that distract you. Enjoyed our meal!"

  • "Dined here for sunday lunch..It was a pleasant but not amazing experience. The menu was quite limited but everything was tasty. The service was perfectly fine. The dining room isn't as grand or old school as it could be. I'd probably opt for the Wolsely or Langhams next time for authentic old school British dining. Kettners just falls short.."

  • "We dined at Kettners on Saturday evening and have to say We came away slightly disappointed. The food was OK, the starters of terrine and pate were good, my steak was quite grisly and not exceptionally hot. The sponge pudding was OK but I can buy the same quality from my local supermarket. The service was reasonable however a Green salad was forgotten and there was little attention to detail, no drinks were offered after our first order, all the other tables had candles, ours did not, my water glass was placed towards the edge of the table which I nearly knocked off the table when being seated. There are a lot more better bistros/restaurants in London."

  • "This was my fourth visit on recent visit to London. Service was Fabulous as was the food. Three of us had the Mussels which were outstanding , also the fish dishes and lamb were all excellent. Wine was superb and we had another lovely evening after an outstanding night at the Palace Theatre. Found us a Taxi home very quickly , Theatre and Kettners an excellent mix . We shall return!"

  • "We had a table of 9, the food was great from starter to dessert. Nothing was too much trouble for our waitors and waitresses, they were attentive when needed and unobtrusive when not required. Will go back and have recommended it to many of my friends already. All 9 of us agree that Kettners gave us a great night out."

  • "There's always a buzz at Kettners and this night was no exception. Great food and wine, attentive service but also the ambiance / atmosphere. On this occasion, the prominent party in the room was a group of "Flappers" all dressed up in 1920's style who seemed to be in an organised play evening set in Chicago.Fascinating for the party.....and for those around too. There is always an excellent choice on the menu and in the many times I have visited in the last two years always left the restaurant looking forward to the next return."

  • "Went to dinner at Kettners for my birthday. We were about 10 minutes early but were told we couldn't go to our table until the correct time. Once we had been seated though we had a great dinner, the food and service was excellent and the atmosphere was lively. I will go back to eat there again."

  • "I go here often - the food is always top notch, the atmosphere is always buzzing (sometimes very loud but that's a sign of happy customers!). Try and book a table in the piano area if possible! The service is, more often than not, a dream - the staff are very friendly, diligent and helpful but not too rigid as staff in these kind of high end places can sometimes be! The wine list is spot on which is a big plus."

  • "You must visit. It is a real experience, food top, service top and they take tastecard."

  • "Been going to Kettners since I started working in Soho in 1990. Never had a bad meal there. Great old school feel to the place too."

  • "Perfect for Sunday lunch with a touch of class. £19.95 for two courses is decent value in Central London. The menu had enough choice including 3 Sunday roasts. The chicken liver parfait for starter is particularly yummy. Decor, ambience & location fabulous as usual."

  • "Really enjoyed dinner here - the atmosphere was great on a saturday evening. When we arrived we got a table by the window, but quickly asked to move as there was a strong draft coming through. The service was great, although did deteriorate a little towards the end when our waiter also had to serve a big group next to us. Nevertheless, the service at the start of the meal was great. Food - was excellent. There could be a bit more choice on the menu, but the standard of food is what you'd expect at a place like this. I'd go back just because its a nice place to eat and has a good buzz about it."

  • "Kettners never fails to disappoint: great atmosphere, lovely decor, a varied menu and delicious food."

  • "Loved this venue and intend to make it a regular of mine. Shocked I had never bothered to eat here before. This has also made my list of possible wedding venues."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "This was the most disappointing experience I've had- so much so I doubt I'll return. The service was shockingly poor- the waiter was trying to do too much- e.g. he took 2 of the 4 starter orders then went off to get another tables' bottle of wine and then came back and took the other 2- really? The starters were lovely but the main was vile (a word I use rarely) I had 'beer-battered fish and chips'. I received a tiny, tiny beer-battered fish, which was soggy and limp but also a breaded fish?? When I questioned this they said we do serve two types of covered fish, yet this is isn't on the menu? When I asked what the actual fish was, no one could answer my question. Really bad, really, REALLY disappointing."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "I had a really good time. Everyone gave brilliant service. The food arrived with appropriate spacing and the mains were brilliant."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "Really lovely setting. Can't fault the food; steak, sea bass, beef, burger - all that we ordered we really enjoyed. Only 10 seconds walking to Prince Edward Theatre, so a fantastic location for pre or post theatre dining. We ran out of time for dessert, so leave plenty of time! Would definitely return if that way again!"
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "Kettner's is well-placed for a business lunch and has a menu that works well if you don't have much time. I had a steak sandwich and my friend had a savoury tart of the day and salad. Service was efficient and friendly."

  • "Great location, building, atmosphere. Good food too, so it was v convivial."

  • "We had a very good meal here before we went to the theatre. Service was excellent and friendly. The place was buzzing. We were served promptly but weren't rushed. The place was buzzing. Loved the wine (our waiter helped us choose it and we were able to try it before we committed to it)."
    dined on 11/01/2014
  • "Very good food in a relaxing and vibrant atmosphere. And a great bar area for pre-dinner drinks - to unwind before dining."
    dined on 13/01/2014

  • "I took my family to Kettners for Sunday lunch and it was brilliant. From the food to the service to the cocktails before hand. Very good ambience. When we arrived at 13:00 it was only a few tables, however by the time we left every table was full so booking is a must! Lovely afternoon. Highly recommend booking a table."
