Afternoon tea was perfectly nice and pretty but the presentation was almost ruined by a near topple of the cake stand. This might sound picky but the table was a bit on the small side... 4 teapots and 2 stacks of afternoon tea goodies took up the entire surface area and it was quite a mission to try and squeeze a cup and saucer on there too. Anyway. Leaving aside the space issue, I enjoyed my visit very much. The girls loved it too. A sweet treat for a day out in town. We were received with a very warm welcome by well-trained staff who were friendly, polite and helpful from the moment we entered the restaurant, throughout our visit to our departure. We felt fully satisfied about our whole experience. The cocktails, food and wine were excellent. A very good selection of wines and a well-stocked bar left us wanting for nothing. Added to this was the wonderful pianist and the live music that added to the overall ambiance without dominating the scene and we were able to have a conversation without shouting over loud music that you find in many establishments. We started off with a glass each of the house Champagne, a little pricey at £9.50 per glass, but it was a special occaision. My starter of Mussels was much bigger than I expected and very good and we both had the Pork Belly, which was delicious. We couldn't fit in a dessert, as the portions are a good size and we were both full. I would like to say that the service was excellent, attentive without being overbearing. I have been going to Kettners for many years, I remember when it was Pizza Express, and always have a good experience. I wouldn't say it was a cheap option, but the food is always good quality and the menu very varied. Upon arriving the staff are very welcoming and polite, something which doesn't change throughout. The wine choice is excellent and varied, with some brilliant Reds on offer. Having had the Onion Soup for a starter, the Beef Bourguignon followed on perfectly and the overall experience was just what we had hoped for. Once again it is worth highlighting the excellent service throughout. It must be said that the grand piano really adds to the sense of occasion as well. I have been visiting ever since for romantic suppers, theatre dinners, client meetings and special occassions, mostly in the restaurant, somtimes in a private room. The service is friendly and efficient, there was a nice group, evenly distributed through the restaurant so you weren't unncessarily crowded. The food was fabulous. I had the beef bourguinon and the meat literaly fell off my fork, it was beautiful.08/05/2013 00:00:00Pre TheatreDinning with fussy eaters is never much fun so I was dissapointed that the pre theatre menu on line (which looked like it would keep everyone happy) was not the same menu we were given when we arrived - meaning that half of our party ordered from the a la carte menu (significantly increasing the bill). That said the food was excellent, despite one soup arriving cold and another too hot to eat, which was rectified very quickly.
Whilst a very grown up venue they accomodated our 3yr old very well & made us feel very welcome.
I'd recommend arriving as early as possible to enjoy a couple of champagne cocktails in the gorgeous bar before your meal. As a non drinker, it was great to have a choice a mocktails. We can recommend the Virgin Mojito & Fruit Punch. We skipped the starters and went straight for the mains:Sweet Potato, Butternut Squash, Pine Nuts & Gruyere Cheese Wellington for me, and Beef Bourguignon for the Mr. Both of it was beautifully cooked and couldn't be faulted. Creme Brulee & Pavlova followed. The whole experience was faultless. Our waiter was good but did seem quite keen to clear plates and move us to the next course, however the website does make it clear that the table is for two hours so somewhat understandable. He did oblige by bringing us extra gravy when requested and mostly kept our water glasses filled up. Can get a bit noisy as quite a low ceiling but nothing that is overbearing. We had the set menu 2 courses for £20, 3 for £25 and a cocktail included. I had the rhubarb Bellini and it was a great way to start the meal. Had the salmon to start and then the pollock. Again both delicious. Some of my friends had the duck and chicken thought the same. We got some side orders of bread, new potatoes and greens but ended up ordering too much!
Wine started from around £20. Service charged 12.5% and we were happy to pay because our waiter was very attentive. This was great value for money and the food was delicious. The chocolate mousse is especially good. The service was very good and the staff are polite and friendly. Only thing I would say is the tables are a bit too close together so getting in and out was pretty tricky. Additionally the acoustics aren't the best, so spreading the tables out a bit more would help this. It was very busy but we had booked and were given a table immediately even though we arrived 30 minutes earlier than expected. What impressed us most is the service. The staff was very professional and alway on hand. We were served promptly despite how busy it was. Food also arrived in a very reasonable amount of time. The wine bottle we ordered was not kept on the table to keep it at the right temperature and the waiter constantly made sure our glasses were filled. I have rarely seen this level of service in any London restaurant even in more expensive ones. The food itself was very good. It is not very fancy food but it is well prepared.
