Diner Reviews
  • "Joe Allen is a reliably good restaurant, the food is always excellent, the menu is not huge but the dishes are always well prepared and nicely presented. I particularly like the black bean soup and the chilli. I would definitely recommend it as a restaurant to go to either before or after the theatre. "

  • "a post theatre bite to eat at Joe Allen is always a pleasure. There are options on the menu to suit all tastes, and the wine list is extensive without being over-priced. A London institution."

  • "One of the very few, old reliable, restaurants in Covent Garden London that keeps going and going and delivering the same excellent service, food and ambiance. Joe Allen remains excellent value in a city where popular trendy resturants excel in the art of overcharging and and underdelivering - still the best cheeseburger in London - even if it's not included on the menu. "

  • "Quite tasty food (had ribs) though we had to ask for water 3 times."

  • "Service is friendly. The menu is okay - not much has changed here. Given the quality of food and service in the area, Joe Allen's no longer stands out and feels dated. Pricey for what it is."

  • "Changing hands has not affected the standard at Joe Allen. Despite being furiously busy - and noisy as hell - the service was excellent and the food as good as always."

  • "There is something special about Joe Allen Restaurant. Hidden down a back street with the merest hint that there is anything there. You open the door, wander down the stairs and you can't fail to be impressed with this simply gorgeous restaurant. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food is just superb. We went twice in three days it was that good (though I come here each time I visit London). You won't find a burger on the menu (it's some sore of tradition it seems) but if you ask you will receive. The Joe Allen burger is legendary and it was improved upon this week by the addition of a salt beef layer (I think they called it a Massive). Good choice of starters and lovely desserts too - wine good too! Give it a go - you'll love it!"

  • "On my visits to London we normally get a visit to Joe Allens and while our starters change our main courses are usually from their selection of steaks. On our recent visit with two friends, I had a rib-eye, another a sirloin while the third was a fillet. All top quality and cooked as ordered and served with excellent French fries. The service is friendly and attentive and a great ambience."

  • "Having read a number of negative reviews and having not visited Joe Allen for almost a year I made a reservation with a degree of apprehension. However I am very pleased to announce that I found all was well; good food (their excellent ‘off menu’ burgers are still available), good service, good atmosphere. I will be returning again soon."

  • "we booked quite late in the day on line and were happy to get a table for two. The last time we went to Joe Allens was 30 years ago and we were apprehensive as to what it would be like now. We neednt have worried - the atmosphere and service were really good. The only critisism we have is that we thought the menu was limited. Although we are not "burger" people I really fancied a proper burger. There were none on the menu although other people were eating them. The waitress explained that although they are not on the menu, they are available. I dont understand why they cant be on the menu. I also had a cocktail after my meal. This was lovely but very small."

  • "I love this place. On Monday I sat at the bar with a drink waiting for a late friend and listened to the lovely piano player. The food we chose was good, wonderful calamari in particular. But the waitress was so impatient she didn't wait to take our drink order, never came back and we had to wave and wave to get someone's attention. Then the starter came before the wine- a no-no in my view. When asked about this -the waitress could not apologise and just blamed her helper."

  • "Busy and buzzy, Joe Allen's is soaked in atmosphere and the food is yummy."

  • "We didn't get any service... we all sat there waiting to order food/drink. The restaurant was half full, most of the tables around us were finished with their lunch or eating their desserts. We decided not to pay the service charge, and the main waiter was very angry when he was charging our cards. It was disappointing that he didn’t ask us why we were not paying the service charge, so it just proved that he knew the service was awful. And to top things off, he thought it was appropriate for him to SLAP DOWN the last credit/debit card we paid with on a table with a big BANG and walked off very angry! The food wasn’t bad, but unfortunately the service (or lack thereof) left all of us with a foul taste in our mouths!"

  • "I cannot recommend this place enough. The service was quick and attentive, the food was fantastic and we found it very good value. Will be going back!"

  • "I believe it has changed hands and in the process has a lost a lot of character. No pianist the night we were there with the piano pushed to one side - is this permanent? The menu is also a little odd, why chile with potatoes rather than rice for example? Oh dear it is becoming bland...."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "A good evening Our table was waiting for us when we arrived. The atmosphere is nice with a pianist. The food is good. I specially like the dessert : an excellent cheesecake. I recommend also the excellent beaujolais."

  • "I have been an enthusiast since the 1980s but...... Steaks were rubbery, and brownies very stale. The atmosphere remains good but complacency appears to have emerged."

  • "Great restaurant with a simple but varied menu choice. Perfect for a pre theatre dining experience."

  • "I used to frequent Joe Allen's back in the late seventies it was always buzzing and I remember having good fun , good food , and good memories . I re visited Joe Allen's last Monday some 30 years later , I was delighted to see it hadn't changed at all with all the memorabilia . The food did deliver too the sirloin steak, the delightful crispy French fries served in the little silver cones . I had the pecan pie served with the Greek yoghurt which is not for the faint hearted ...... was delish and a good way to end an enchanting evening . It was a very good evening had by the three of us and thank- you for making this possible well done Joe Allen's . If I had to tweak this report I would only say to the waitresses a smile goes a long way ...."

  • "My son and I had a lovely pre theatre dinner at Joe Allen Monday evening. I have been coming to Joe Allen for over 20 years and nothing has changed....great atmosphere and very good service."

  • "I booked with a special request for a quiet table and was seated next to a birthday party of 10-or-so women. A series of waiters and one bus boy kept delivering the wrong drinks - and we never did get the vegetable side we ordered. I like the ambience, the live piano music and our main waitress was friendly. The steaks were cooked to order but for the price were nothing special (I ordered the filet expecting a thick cut but was served a piece of meat flat as a minute steak). It's my kind of adult dining establishment but I don't know if I'd go back."

  • "Great atmosphere, excellent service and just what was needed when time is a bit tight before the theatre!"

  • "Restaurant is underground but lit very well. Décor is American showbiz-y, theatre posters for shows on Broadway and West End everywhere, Excellent steaks, and American beers, Service very good, have been before, would go back again."

  • "The best thing about Joe Allen is the atmosphere. The food was ok but nothing special and the waitress didn't warn us that the main course would have no vegetables and didn't ask if we wanted to order any."

  • "My husband and I decided to book at the last minute and were pleasantly surprised that we were able to get a table at short notice. This place is packed with character and the food is great and reasonably priced. I can't believe it took me so long to finally try Joe Allen and I will definitely not leave it so long before returning. Highly recommended!"

  • "we loved going to Joe Allen,a real treat for anyone in the entertainment industry. Last may we went felt it had lost something menu had changed and not quite the same atmosphere as usual .We were told that the owners had sold out.I say If somethings not broke dont try to fix it.staff were still great, will go again this may and hope the usual great experience is back I do hope so."

  • "Took friends for lunch there after not having visited for quite a long time. Great atmosphere and ambience but disappointed with food. Mostly ok but expensive. However I had Rib-eye steak and it was disgraceful - full of gristle and fat, hardly any meat. I complained to chef and had it taken off the bill. Menu distinctly odd - it's not sure what it is trying to be - steak restaurant or American diner. I might return for a drink at bar or pre-theatre snack but not as good as I remember."

  • "we ate at Joe Allen for a pre-theatre meal. early Saturday evening the place was buzzing with many theatregoers enjoying the food. The set menu offer is an excellent deal. Service was excellent - and we spoke to the staff about the passing just a few weeks before of Jimmy Hardwick, who had been playing the piano at the restaurant since the opening day of Joe Allen in the 70s. We'll miss you Jim"

  • "Nice atmosphere with attentive and friendly staff. Excellent wine list with some nice choices from Napa not seen since the last time I was actually in California. After an excellent starter of pulled chicken croquettes I wasn't wowed by my rib-eye steak but maybe I made a poor choice, everyone else in our party loved their main courses. Would go again."
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "Great for tasty well-prepared food and prompt service that means you enjoy a pre-theatre supper without anxiously watching the clock. We had super fresh salads and delicious smoked aslmon as starters, followed by tender chicken and a rare treat - skate wing perfectly cooked for mains. Service was very attentive without being overdone and the atmosphere is livele, lovely soundtrack of classic movie, jazz and blues songs but you can still hear yourselves talk."

  • "Great location for theatre land and the food was great if a little bit over-priced but paying for the location and reputation of the restaurant."
