About Hix Oyster and Fish House
Hix Oyster & Fish House overlooks The Cobb in Lyme Regis and boasts the most stunning panoramic views across the Jurassic coast. This is easily one of the most picturesque spots to enjoy fresh British fish and seafood. The Fish House has an informal, light and airy dining room with simple white wooden tables and chairs with the added bonus of a large outdoor terrace. Our focus is on sourcing and serving the best produce we can find and doing as little to it as possible so that you enjoy the real flavour of great British ingredients. We cure and smoke our own salmon and grow our own herbs in the Fish House garden.
If you fancy seeing your food being prepared and watching the chefs at work, book a seat at the popular Kitchen Table. You can also enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the kitchen at the ‘Shipwreck Bar’.
We cater for everyone at the Fish House. We always have a meat dish for the ardent carnivore. Kid's and vegetarian menus and gluten-free dishes are always available.

Hix Oyster and Fish House Ratings and Reviews
Excellent food wonderful view
The hot oysters in a scrumpy batter were excellent. Main course fish dish also excellent. Staff were knowledgable and attentive. Overall a very good lunch and experience
A big disappointment
My partner and I came to the Restaurant last week, and we are both quite foodie people. However, the pheasant starter was bland, and the main course equally so. Over-priced and under-whelming. Sorry, but apart from the "cockle popcorn" the rest just fell way short of the mark.

Visit to Lyme Regis
The Hix Oyster Bar was one of our reasons for visiting Lyme Regis. We booked without knowing that we had an option of a special menu on that night (a "Feast" night). We opted for the special menu and this might have been a mistake. We had three small starters to share between the two of us and then a fish pie to share. The fish pie certainly lacked a variety of fish - in fact we could only identify salmon. No expensive bits! We were uncertain about the starters and asked to see the menu again to identify the courses. My partner (who owns a restaurant) thought that the meal had been put together with a view to the margin. We thought that it was poor value and wouldn't return. We are of the opinion that it is the view that makes this restaurant and that of course was missing on a November evening.
We were given a table next to the area where waiters would serve other tables. No much room left for us and the waiters. The wine was overpriced. The food generally good (very good marinated tuna starter followed by a fish pie and fish fingers) but more on the fair side. Table was sticky so it wasn't plaesant at the touch. Overall an underwhelming experience and a bit too pricey for what we got.
Our first dining experience at Hix Oyster & Fish House won't, hopefully, be our last. The next time we manage a couple of days away in lovely Lyme, we will most certainly book again. The menu was interesting, the food (fish!) beautifully prepared and cooked, the service excellent (staff were knowledgeable and friendly) and the ambience was lovely. The Maître D' obviously ran a tight but happy ship, and we would like to thank him particularly for the warm welcome (despite being a tad late).
My wife, two young daughters and i enjoyed the evening meal at Hix's Lyme Restaurant. Great service, excellent food and lovely, lovely cocktails (for the adults). Would definitely revisit when next in Lyme.
We went to Hix on a return visit to Lyme Regis, we were there last year to visit the River Cottage. The food was great value for money, and excellent quality. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. We chose a mid priced wine, which was excellent once it was chilled to our satisfaction. Our two main courses of Newlyn Brill and Huss were just fantastic. The Huss very original and the Brill, just a perfectly cooked classic fish with Salsa Verde. I'd recommend it to anyone, Lyme Regis however needs more Taxis'!!

We went for a special occasion - our wedding anniversary - and were delighted by every aspect . It was a memorable and delicious evening.

Great service from well briefed waiters. Even better food. Great harbour views. Never had anything but excellent food here. Expensive but worth every penny.
Supper - Wednesday 21 Oct 15
Having read a range of mixed reviews, we visited with some trepidation. Our waiter advised us on the wine (we wanted a 500ml, were persuaded to upgrade to a better wine and ended up unexpectedly with a 0.7l bottle at nearly twice the cost). We were also persuaded to have the most expensive item on the mains menu! The wine and John Dory were good, but we left with a sense that we had been pressured into spending much more than we would have. For us, this wasn't, therefore, the best dining experience we had during our week in Lyme Regis.
Not as "special" as we hoped, Stunning location
Having been told at the door that most dishes could be prepared for gluten free diner, in reality that was not the case so a limited selection, rather disappointing. Vegetables leaves were undercookedand chewy, but we were not charged for them. Situation stunning, and good service, glad we went but not sure we would go again.

Excellent seafood. Outstanding value crab. 80 pence per potato! Disappointing wine list. Plastic tables ~ really? Would struggle if busy. You pay for the name and the view more than the cuisine
We had a delicious dinner at Hix's this week. The staff were welcoming and really friendly. They knew the menu intimately - useful having a waiter who used to be the chef there! Great help with choosing what to eat. All the food was delicious - can recommend the hake's head - looks a tad scary but really tasty. We had the treacle tart for pudding and it came with clotted cream instead of the ice cream on the menu. As soon as we mentioned it - having eaten the whole lot - a serving of ice cream arrived for us! They were so sorry for serving the wrong type of cream - so we ended up with both. Perfect food, perfect service - a great evening - definitely will be back. Thank you.
OK, but didn't live up to expectations
We booked Hix having heard good things and looked at the website. We were on holiday and after a well-presented, elegant place that offered top-notch seafood. We booked a table for 8:30pm and arrived early at 8:10p, so we were offered a drink on the heated outdoor terrace. It was dark when we arrived but the views would be lovely from here in the daytime or on a light evening. We ordered drinks on arrival but they did not come until we were seated at our table in the restaurant at 8:30pm. The restaurant was completely full. This created a buzzing atmosphere but we got the distinct impression that there were not enough waiting staff on – they all looked very rushed and our waiter apologised to us at the end of the evening for not being able to have spent enough time with us. The food was fine but not outstanding. Husband ordered oysters to start and I had the butternut squash –both were good. I had the fish pie main course, which was tasty, but very heavy on the mashed potato – could have done with a little more fish! It was served with a very nice, fresh salad in a bowl. This looked and tasted lovely but was impossible to eat it from the bowl as the leaves were huge – had to ask one of the waiters for a separate side plate. Husband had cheese for dessert and I had ice cream. The cheese was not presented very attractively – essentially a huge slab of cheddar with a tin of biscuits and some small blobs of chutney to accompany it. The ice cream was perfectly adequate, but nothing special. Overall the food was fine, but not enough to justify the prices charged for it. Generally felt there was lots of style but lacking substance. The drinks are overpriced - £6.50 for bottled beer is ridiculous. Also several main courses were not available – fair enough that they would have run out of some items at 8:30pm, but there were about five things we couldn’t have. TL; DR - Decent food in a nice, contemporary restaurant, but over-priced for the standard of food served.

After reading the reviews for HIX we weren't sure what to expect. We weren't disappointed. We had an excellent dinner. The sea bass was amazing. The servers that night were very good too. I know we'll be going back again. Thank you for a great evening.

We had a delicious birthday lunch yesterday. The food was excellent and service good. The wine list was disappointing, and pricey.

The location is pretty special with great views over Lyme Bay and some outside seating making the place have a nice relaxed holiday feel. The food was beautifully presented and cooked particularly well. I loved the barbecued Huss which was great tasting and well matched with the autumn coleslaw. The pudding menu seemed a little bit lazy though as most items had a blackberry and apple base however I would definitely go back as it is so rare to find beautiful sea views coupled with excellent food. This is the perfect place for say a birthday lunch with friends or romantic supper after walk on the cob, magical!
Manager very attentive, waitresses excellent - food of high quality. We were even given a complimentary cocktail for staying at the Hix Townhouse, where we always stay when we visit Lyme.
Fab food at Hix Oyster and Fish House
Booked a table here for a special occasion, on the recommendation of a friend. Warmly greeted, fab views and (mainly) good service from friendly and informed staff. We all enjoyed the food - Fish curry, sole, fish pie and crab. The desserts were delicious - especially the plum frumble and the lemon sorbet and fruit (possibly the best lemon sorbet I have ever eaten !). We were a bit surprised that one of us did not receive a plate for his crab dish and I had to ask for a spoon with which to serve the curry from the serving dish. Minor gripes which did nothing to spoil the meal. Parking is tricky. All in all a fab experience. Thank you.
An expensive mistakeish pie was
As was promised the view from the restaurant out to the Cob and along the coast was as good as one could have wanted, sadly that is where the wished for experience ended. The food was of a poor standard and expensive, although the fish soup was quite good. For our two main courses we ordered the Fish House pie with salad and fish fingers with chips and peas. A bad omen for the fish pie was a bone in the first mouthful and continued with poorly seasoned fish pieces in a bland sauce under a mash potato topping accompanied by a poorly washed salad. The fish fingers, three, were little more than fish goujons in an over baked crust and the chips were of tha McDonalds variety. Our complaint about the fish pie was to be fair dealt with correctly in that we were not expected to pay for it but the overall expedience was one of disappointment that such a great location for a restaurant was being spoil by the poor quality but expensive food on offer.
I went to Hix Oyster and Crabhouse with expectations. They were not fulfilled. The fish was cooked to perfection but the chilli sauce on it was far too hot, had to scrape it off. Good salads. Little things like no bread and butter offered, no real choice of biscuits with cheese either Dorset knobs or oat biscuits. Cheese choice was pretty ordinary. Again no butter. I had oysters two were tiny and one was perfect in size and taste but they had bits of shell in them. Service was not so good.
good food, poor service
We had an early evening meal for two one Saturday recently. We liked the location looking out over the Cobb and were excited to be there but we soon become disappointed with the lack of services when it took over half an hour for anyone to come and ask for our initial drinks order - and that was only after we went to ask about it. It took another 15 mins for the drinks to arrive. The rest of the service was sporadic at best but the food was delicious and well presented. We noticed another couple leave after half an hour due to the same reason and several other tables had problems with their first orders. Hopefully it was just a temporary problem due to some issue with the bar staff and if this is resolved I would be happy to recommend this establishment.
Warm white wine and poor service spoilt the evening
A view of the bay
Gazing out to sea, eating delicious seafood was a delightful holiday experience. Followed it with a swim in the sea later that afternoon. Only criticism. is of the ventilation in the restaurant- it was very hot and stuffy. We were moved out of the window with no fuss at all and we loved our visit, but can only imagine how hot it must be in summer. Our visit was late September. Wiseowl
The curates egg
As with the curates egg, it was good in parts. The oysters were excellent, and the main course was "O.K" but shell in the dressed crab was not accceptable. The John Dory main course was very good, although a bit small for the price. There was a long delay after the main course and we felt we had been forgotten. Nobody came to ask if we wanted a dessert. Coffee was strong and acceptable. Altogether not as it could have been for a reputation of the Hix standard.
Outstanding Seafood / Appalling Service
I dined here twice this week, once for dinner and once for lunch. On both occasions the seafood was exquisite and worthy of five stars. As was the location with stunning views over Lyme Bay and the Cobb. Ill informed waiting staff not knowing the catch of the day for the fish platter as well as shell platter is just not good enough. A bottle of warm white wine being brought to our table, forgetting about the jug of water ordered and long waits for food. Hats off though to the Bar Manager though, he was well informed on his wines. On my second visit he saved the day on a couple of occasions checking and cleaning our table and making sure all was fine. Ahh ... if only all the waiting staff were of the same calibre a worth five stars it would be!
Lack of dishes on menu available
Disappointing to find out some of the menu items not available especially after we had ordered our meal.Abandoned after placing order of first drinks waiting for drinks and water. Left waiting at door until manager was able to welcome us into restaurant to find table not ready. He was on phone when we arrived and no one else welcomed us into restaurant.Nowhere to sit and wait inside.
A curates egg
We are still unsure what Hix fish and oyster house seeks to be. It seems to vacillate between putative fine dining and cafe bistro. On the positive, the food was simple local ingredients, well cooked. Where the whole thing was let down was in being understaffed. Pleasant and well meaning waiting staff could not mask a creaking operation on the evening we ate there. Maybe we were unlucky, but if Mr Hix wishes to continue with the premium end of pricing, then the overall customer experience must be spot on every night.
Whilst the restaurant itself is beautiful and the views are incredible our food was sadly lacking. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his crispy mackerel starter but my smoked salmon was 'sad' - 3 slices on a plate, that was it. No garnish and very expensive for what it was. My partners main course of fish pie he described as bland and had eaten better in our local pub. But the most disappointing element of our meal had to be my crab. I have no idea what had happened to it from shell to plate but it was tasteless. Also, why was it covered in chopped egg? This wasn't mentioned on the menu and it's just as well I don't have an egg allergy (my sister does that's why I am always aware). And goodness knows what they had done to the brown meat - I am unable to describe that politely. Gloop is the only word I can think off. Salad and chips to go with the crab were extras. But the chips were of the McDonalds variety - thin and straight out of a freezer! I have eaten crab in many restaurants all over the world and this has to be the worst ever. Our meal was slightly redeemed with our deserts - a panacotta type pudding for my partner and a very nice cheese board for me - expensive but lovely. My only other comment would be that during our meal we overheard 3 tables complaining about lack of serviettes, no bread, wine taking too long to arrive and dry food. So, all in all, we considered it an expensive experience but we shan't be returning.
Great views, good service but food average
Mackerel starter was literally a few scraps of fish which given the amount of mackerel caught in Lyme is ridiculous. Home made fish fingers, just 3 were bland and nothing special. Sauce on Huss was pretty hot and yet fish has a subtle flavour. Location is fantastic and staff excellent. Also dont approve of 10% compulsory service charge as a matter of principle ....and how much do staff actually receive?
Expensive and over rated
Unfortunately this restaurant appears to be relying on past reputation. Mediocre food and very expensive. Staff pleasant but flogging a 'dead horse'. Not good value for money! Will not return or recommend.

Very, very disappointing, the staff were slow, service as equally slow and the food nothing special at all, should get some tips from River Cottage
Well worth the climb
Trying out the famous restaurant was really helped by the lovely weather we had on the day to show off the stunning views from one's table. Not happy with the 'no booking best window tables' on the website then to listen to the Manager telling people who asked to sit in the front 'sorry - booked' ! Over attentive service - we did not enjoy the waitress saying 'wonderful' in nearly every reply. The point is the food was very good the location outstanding (once you had worked out where to park - why don't they simply say at the top of the road on the way in & walk down?) . The prices are full to say the list but the place is small & to make a sensible business return the charges are understandable.
My fiancee and I visited for dinner a few days before our wedding. The staff were fantastic and really made our evening special. This is a restaurant not only with of the best views in the country but also brilliant top end food. Highly recommend!
Not worth the money
Went here on a recent stay in Lyme. Booked well in advance but was still given a cramped table by the door which constantly got left open and had a continuous stream of diners/servicing staff passing through. Add to that a complete lack of atmosphere and nice but average food, and we felt we had really overpaid for the name. Not what we expected at all! Went to the RC Canteen in Axminster a couple of days later and had three superb courses for a third less than we had paid at Hix where we only had two courses each. We knew Hix was expensive but expected food that was something special, which sadly it was not. So wouldn't recommend unless you like overpriced food in a not very convivial atmosphere.

Great food, fairly priced, very good service with staff being very attentive, welcoming and even making us laugh a few times. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are in Lyme Regis as it is in a fantastic location with beautiful views of the beach at sunset, great cocktails and good seafood.
beautiful views gorgeous food
We ate a late lunch here on Saturday afternoon. The oysters were delicious. The views were spectacular. Waitress was very helpful. Would definitely recommend.
Had a fabulous time with two friends and my husband. The food was delicious. Enjoyed prawn cocktails and smoked salmon to start. Then the Huss was particularly delicious and my husband enjoyed the John Dory. Our guests tucked into lobster and mackerel and declared that delicious too. Desert was a range of hedgerow pie, chocolate mousse and summer berries with sorbet. Again all were enjoyed. My husband a self confessed cheese lover had enough good cheese to satisfy him with the added bonus of oatcakes. The only fault I could find was my cappichino was a little on the cool side. All in all a good day with a nice atmosphere and good food and company.
