    On the last Friday of every month we have live music courtesy of our resident musician Huw Price. Huw Price is a London-based guitarist and singer. He has worked as a resident musician in top venues in London, plus countless weddings, private parties, and fashion shows; corporate functions for blue-chip companies like Audi, Eversheds and Microsoft, and private art exhibitions for well-known artists such as Banksy. He plays both his own compositions and a wide range of Latin jazz and soul classics.

A word from Hix Oyster & Chophouse
Hix Oyster & Chop House is situated a stones throw from the Barbican theatre and Smithfield Market, London’s historic meat market. The wooden floors, marble oyster bar, tiled walls & linen tablecloths go towards creating an elegant yet unfussy dining room. The menu reflects Mark Hix’s signature British style with seasonal, frequently-changing dishes featuring oysters from around the British Isles, and a selection of meat and steak on the bone. A set menu from just £19.50 for 2 courses is available every lunchtime, pre and post theatre.
Kids also eat free from the kids menu, when dining with an adult, 12-6pm Monday –Friday and Sundays. Join us also for live jazz on Sunday between 1-4pm and enjoy our 3 course Sunday Roast for just £27.95!
Visit the Chop House any Monday night and pay no corkage when you bring your own wine.

  • "I've dined here many times without problem, but this Friday's meal/service was very disappointing. Meals took way too long to come out. Whilst the offering of some complimentary salmon was a nice gesture, my "medium" fillet (at £36!) came out overdone and cold. Having originally told us that one of our orders was "overdone" and was being re-done, I can't help feeling they thought "what the hell, let's serve it and see". Despite being a busy Friday, this shouldn't be a strain on such an established business. So, they dropped the ball in my view and, at their price point, I might struggle to recommend the place without warning of a potential repeat of this poor experience."

  • "Took my wife & baby for a Mother's Day treat. The restaurant is quite tight on space but they were able to accommodate our buggy. Straight away my wife got a free glass of champagne as a Mothers Day surprise, and every mother got the same treatment. The food was sublime, I had Heaven & Earth (black pudding on apple base with chicken sauce) & lamb chop, my wife had asparagus & pheasant egg salad, and sea bass. For dessert we shared the rhubarb tart - one of the best desserts I've ever had and would go back for that alone. All the food was really amazing, in 13 years living in London this was one of the best meals I've had. Service was friendly and exact. The food arrived promptly. Live jazz (piano & bass) provided a lovely ambience.10/10"

  • "Went at 5 pm, when some late lunch customers were finishing off, so were left to the restaurant to ourselves. Prompt yet friendly waiters, knowledgeable about the food. Only problem was our main took quite a long time coming, the only starters we had were 2 oysters for me, got them around 5.15 pm just after ordering. Our steak mains didn't arrive till 45 mins later. Not sure if these are common timings, but my friend had not had any starter, so assumed the mains would come earlier. This meant we had no time for dessert. I supposed we should have let them know we had to leave at a certain time to hurry them along. Nice ambiance and staff though, will come back again"

  • "I have visited this Hix restaurant a number of times and each time it never disappoints. My most recent visit was on a business lunch with a client that had never previously visited any Hix restaurant. He was suitably impressed, and stated that he would return for an evening meal with his wife. I was, as always, very impressed with the quality of the food, service and the venue. Our steak was very tasty and cooked to perfection! I cannot recommend this particular Hix venue enough, it always has a really good vibe, friendly yet totally professional, very comfortable & classy. Mark Hix should be proud of this venue and the team that represent him & everything he stands for. Keep it up! See you again soon."

  • "We were early for our reservation, but were able to have a table anyway - sadly, from there, it was a terrible experience. Waiter was really poor, didn't listen to our order, so we only received one of our starter dishes, not the 2 we ordered. When we sent it back (there was human hair on it!), he just grabbed it from us, no apology. Main courses - one was ok,the other bland and over priced for fish fingers at £18!! Manager did try to recover the situation, and generously waived the bill. Sadly, having already been to Hix in Lyme Regis and Soho, and having met him in Dartmouth, I fear it may have been some time since Mark Hix actually visited this restaurant - he would have been shocked with what he saw. Definitely will not be returning."

  • "It was refreshing to be served a steak that was cooked how it was asked for. Many places overcook a medium rare steak, but all of ours were done perfectly. The flavour of the porterhouse was superp, I only needed some horseradish at the end when the 1.1kg was taking its toll! It would be nice if there were a few more resonably priced bottles of wine, or more fairly 4-5 quid was taken off a couple labels, as some bottles had been priced above the norm."

  • "If you're looking for somewhere with a real buzz and good food, this is great. Wouldn't recommend for a business meeting, on a Wednesday evening at least. "Heaven and Earth" - black pudding - starter very good, as was the lamp chop main. Not cheap. Had a few wines from the expensive end of their list missing which could have been disappointing if we'd been more particular as they didn't have many choices at higher prices."

  • "Failed to meet expectations. Drink service and food service was slow and arrogant. Food was slap dash at best. Smoked arrived with two slabs on a plate, no garnish - had to ask for lemon. Broccoli was unwashed - contained bits of grit in the heads. Meat cuts were fatty and stringy. Bubble and squeak was unseasoned. Waiter was lofty, self-important and vain. A disappointing evening."

The main waiter dealing with our area of the restaurant was far too busy dealing with the table of ladies next to ours - he nearly said a word to us all evenin, so much so that several other waiters had to step in to take drinks and deserts orders. As I say, the food and drink makes up for a lot, but at nearly £100 a head (with service automatically added to the bill), you expect top service, which was not delivered and hasn't on my last few visits."

When we mentioned this to the man in charge, he made absolutely no comment and ignored us. We have sent an e-mail to the restaurant but have had no reply yet."

  • "We were the only people in the restaurant at 6pm and were ignored for 20 minutes whilst all the wait staff stood in a large group chatting. Even frantic waving from both of us didn't catch their eye. Eventually, the barman came over and went to get someone to serve us. We didn't have the same server twice after that. Very poor. The meat is good quality, but poorly cooked. The sides are extra on top of the expensive meat, very pricey and just average. The chocolate mousse tasted as though they had burned the chocolate and over whipped the cream - grainy and very bitter and just, well, wrong. And over £14 service charge for 2 people after being ignored?! Forget it! We will not be returning."

  • "With a party of 4, one was a vegiterian, there was a good atmosphere and ambiance at 8.30 on a Friday evening. Separate vegiterian menu may make them feel less included within the group as this is got given as standard, but has to be requested. Over all the meat choice is excellent with knowledgeable waiter to explain the cuts. Dishes do come as they state, that is just the meat no sides or frills. Wine choice is in the upper price bracket, but the choice is very good. To finish the desert menu is 2nd to none."

Really poor considering it's advertised as pre-theatre and the supposed standard of the restaurant. Only go if you've got the whole night to spare."

  • "we have eaten at Mark Hix for sunday lunch three times in the past, however now they have live jazz and the place is much move busy, the quality of food has gone from best sunday lunch in london to hard roast tatties, very tasteless gravy. The beef however was great piece of age sirloin. O and remember if you book a table ask not to be sitting on the runway next to the bar, its so cold every time someone opens the door. ( maybe a curtain like they have at Wild Honey would be a good solution, but maybe a bit to French for the British chef) Also waiting staff, if some leaves two and half roast tatties on a Sunday roast, there is a problem But But But the apple pie is still the best in London by far, and that custard Amazing"

  • "A lovely starter of garlic soup with poashed quails eggs. The main was a shared porterhouse steak which was rich and unctuous with Tewkesbury mustard and vegatables. The only complaint being that the beetroots were a bit hard and also not many vegatables for 4.50 a time on top of a a £75 steak (for two) The almond ice cream and bakewell cake was really nice along with the americano coffee"
