A word from HIX - Mayfair
A word from HIX Mayfair. If you're impressed by an excellent pedigree, HIX Mayfair in Brown's Hotel is undoubtedly the place for you. Celebrating British food and art, this restaurant drips with style with original wood panelling on which artworks by Tracey Emin and Rankin hang. Behind the scenes, celebrated chef Mark Hix has put his recognisable stamp on the menu created by executive chef Lee Streeton, who previously worked alongside Hix at Le Caprice and The Ivy. You can expect your glamorous dining experience to include British classics as well as dishes such as salt-baked Brixham sea bass with Alexanders, or sharing dishes such as slow-cooked shoulder and roasted rump of Warwickshire lamb with Baker's potatoes - but do note that these menus are updated every month as they only use the best British seasonal ingredients and the set menu changes every day.

Diner Reviews
  • "The 2 course special menu was good value for Hix but when wine and coffees are added it is still not an inexpensive evening. We were celebrating a friends birthday and the service was fabulous, friendly and attentive but not over so. - they brought truffles with a birthday message which was a lovely touch and offered an alternative to the set meal due to an allergy."

  • "Had heard about HIX - Mayfair for quite a while, so jumped at the chance to try it out for a bit of a discount (25% off a la carte menu) when I came across it on TT! Location & Ambience: We went on a quiet evening (Sunday), so it was a great place to catch up with a few friends where we could share a good meal over excellent conversation in a traditionally-set dining room. Centrally located near Green Park. Food & Service: Service was absolutely excellent - there when you needed it, but unobtrusive and very polite yet friendly. My liked my food quite a bit (the red gunard - amazing sauce and perfectly cooked cockles), though one of my friends, who is vegetarian, was a bit let down as her food looked quite dry. Desserts were ok."

  • "We booked this as a top table deal and had a very good set menu selection. The staff were very attentive and service was excellent."

  • "My friend and I had the set menu (starters of x1 soup, x1 tart) and both had the lamb with kidneys. Great use of UK-sourced ingredients and the lamb neck was cooked perfectly. Bread was warm and tasty and the cocktails just the right amount of kick. But what really made the night was the service. OUTSTANDING. All the waitstaff were friendly with just the right amount of attentive-ness. Thank you for making such a lovely evening."

  • "Had a really lovely dinner at the Hix - Mayfair. I was looking for somewhere for a late meal on a Sunday with a good British menu. The beautiful restaurant was quiet (a few other tables besides ourselves) and wasn't too formal or starchy. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. It was still little pricey even with the offer (25% off food) but in my opinion, definitely worth it. Would be great for a special occasion, an evening out or a date with someone special. I would happily go again and look forward to my next visit."

  • "Really enjoyed our daughter's birthday lunch. They came out with a birthday plate with little tea cakes at the end of the meal and the waiter took photos for us. The hotel is lovely too."

  • "I booked a table for three for my 25th birthday here. It was lovely, the service was great and the bar tender even came over to offer my boyfriend a few non-alcoholic cocktail ideas because he was driving. The food was great. We are big fans of Hix restaurants!"

  • "I took my wife for a weekend out in London for her Birthday. We dined at HIX before walking into the West-End for the show and had one of the nicest meals I've had in a long time. The staff were friendly and professional and we were lucky enough to catch the pre-service instructions from the maitre d', which was very enlightening as to how a restaurant runs so effectively. Thank you for a great dining experience."

  • "I took my mum and she loved it. From entering to leaving, the staff were lovely and the food and drinks were outstanding!"

  • "The food was as good as we'd come to expect from Hix restaurants, with tasty and tender fillet steak and deer, creamy panna cotta, and rich but refreshing chocolate ice-cream. The alcoholic drinks were very expensive with the cheapest glass of bubbly being £16.50, and we were disappointed that there were non-alcoholic drinks displayed on the menu, though they were available. We felt a bit pressured to order wine by one of the waiters, but the other staff were very gracious and attentive. Brown's is a gorgeous venue - stylish mix of traditional wood panelling and modern art. It was quiet and relaxed on a Sunday, and we were seated at a larger table by the window to give us lovely views of the rest of the restaurant as well as of Mayfair."

  • "My party of four took advantage of the fixed price evening meal and found this to be of great value. The staff were very efficient and helpful and the quality and presentation of food as good as we anticipated from a restaurant of this reputation. Given the restaurant's excellent location a superb evening was enjoyed by all. The meal was was organised for a Thursday evening and the restaurant was fairly busy with a good ambiance . A very good evening and one we would be happy to repeat and recommend."

  • "The food and the service here are excellent and I would unhesitatingly recommend the restaurant for those qualities. We went for a late lunch with a couple of friends and we chose Hix not only because of the good reviews but also because of the £30/£35 table d'hôtel menu. This was indeed very good value but I did feel ripped off by the price of wine and tea/coffee. One of the least expensive wines was a French country red at £49 a bottle; a pot of fresh mint tea for one (i.e. hot water poured over mint leaves) cost over £5. Hence our final bill of £240, a 12.5% service charge having been added as well. So, a touch of the curate's egg, good in part."

  • "We had the lunch deal at Hix in Brown's Hotel, London - £35 for 3 courses with an aperitif, and rather wished we had not tried this restaurant, but had gone somewhere else instead. The roast chicken main from the trolley was dry and difficult to eat, more gravy and less stuffing would have helped, The staff were friendly and keen to be of service, but it was not a good meal overall and we will not be returning,"

  • "My friend and I both had the lamb main served with a gorgeous mashed potato. Unfortunately by the time we received it it was cold. The restaurant were very good and brought us new servings in hot dishes. The starters and puds were also lovely. Will certainly go back again."

  • "We went to dinner with our daughter for a celebratory meal, and enjoyed the well-cooked at good quality English food as well as the professional and friendly service. The value offered through top-table on the set menu to include an excellent cocktail was outstanding."

  • "Four of us had a very relaxing Sunday lunch here. The food was very good especially the roast beef . The exception was a foraged berry sorbet served with a chocolate pudding. The berry sorbet was just horrid. We had a lovely time and would happily return."

  • "Love the bar here, but there was no atmosphere in the restaurant at 7pm on a Fri. We went for the 2-course menu plus cocktail for £30 each, which is good value, but the food was a bit underwhelming. I chose the leek and potato broth followed by the brill. Portion sizes were huge for a gourmet restaurant. The soup was bland and the brill too buttery. My partner chose the rabbit (again, huge portion). Cocktails were average. This is a pleasant place to dine for a working lunch, but London has much more to offer on a Friday evening."

  • "Starter and main course disappointing. Dressed crab still had some unknown crunchy stuff in it. Lobster outgunned by the salad. Had to ask to order some wine. Espresso cold on arrival. But the apple pie was superb. In all an indifferent and disappointing experience. Unlikely to want to repeat it."

  • "I wouldn't have found this if it hadn't been through top table. Excellent selection across the menu - the horseradish soup was sublime. Beautiful restaurant with a great atmosphere."

  • "What a let down - after some great meals at Trasmshed and Hix Oyster & Chop, I had high hopes for Hix Mayfair on the most romantic night of the year. Sadly, that wasn't to be: we ended up waiting an hour before betting our first glass of wine. I was told the steak would take half an hour (!) - after patiently waiting 45 mins, I was presented with the grimmest lump of old leathery boot masquerading as steak. Although the waiter offered to change it for something else, it was so bloomin' late, I went hungry. It wasn't even crazy busy and since the restaurant had phonesd me several times before to double triple check I was coming, one would have thought they'd have a pretty good idea of numbers and staff themselves accordingly."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a lovely lunch at Hix, where the food was perfectly presented, cooked and served, we both ordered the Beef Wellington, cooked to perfection. The service was unpretentious, and we receive just enough attention during the meal. It must be said, however, that, if you choose a special offer, expect to have a sharp increase of your final bill if you simply order a bottle of sparkling water and two expressos on top."

  • "Great location and the duck was fantastic. Overall, a touch bland though."

  • "This was standard gourmet fair. Great ingredients but nothing dazzled. There were maybe three tables occupied on a Monday night at prime time, which made a dead atmosphere. Good for conversation but nothing exciting. Cocktails were good; bartender adept at the classics. Far too overpriced for such boredom - cost of a quiet dinner for two: £146!"

  • "I took my wife here for Valentines Day last Feb (2013). The staff were courteous and friendly and the service efficient but not pushy. The restaurant decor mixes traditional styling with modern touches and feels relaxed and comfortable. The food was excellent and the portions were spot on. No overly full feeling or need to grab more food afterwards. I would highly recommend HIX to friends who wanted a romantic evening with excellent food and friendly service. My parting advice - Go there and enjoy!"

  • "We had been recommended Hix - Mayfair by a friend as a great place to eat for an anniversary meal. What a terrific recommendation it was! The ambience is great, service outstanding and the food superb. We decided to go with the fixed price two course with a cocktail option at £30 each. This is incredible value (one main course alone was £41 on the a la carte menu). The food cannot be faulted and the staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive without being obtrusive. I would thoroughly recommend Hix - Mayfair to anyone looking for a high quality meal in great surroundings and great value. Go there you will not be disappointed!!!"

  • "I dined here with a friend as had heard that it was good and it seemed good value. It lived up to expectation. The service is wonderful - amazing waiters, absolutely faultless. The food was really tasty, and, good value on the TT menu - including a gorgeous cocktail!. The main menu is very expensive! We also ordered a bottle of wine - it was an Italian white and was amazing. We looked through the menu to pick that, didnt just select from the initial 6 'white wines' they show you - thats a tip - do look beyond those. Though there is nothing below £30, for a couple of glasses, to compliment a wonderful meal, I don't see that as bad. They have to make their money somehow - you are in a beautiful hotel in the middle of Mayfair! GO!"

  • "The service was very good - a very attentive head waiter/maitre'd, the other waiters were just ok. Shared the prawn cocktail starter, it was delicious. Plenty of prawns and the sauce was just so tasty. We ordered a shared main, the deer wellington. It was beautiful, served a bit luke-warm. The accompanying spiced red cabbage tasted more sweet and like beetroot. The creamed spinach was very poor and lacklustre. Wines were generally too - we always get annoyed when we see this. ended up paying £50 for the wine....marginally more expensive than the shared main meal! Very poor value. Didn't have dessert as we were very full. I wont go back unless they wine menu incorporates a good selection of affordable bottles."

  • "I took a friend for a belated b'dy celebrational meal, Saturday evening 7pm 25/1/2014. We had the set menu. Good choice, although only 3 options per course, different enough to not feel limited. Beautiful hotel, Hix was very popular as the evening went on, not any empty tables. Service v good, friendly and polite. Sofisticated dining. My only negative comment the cost of the wine, as we are both drivers we wanted only a glass of wine each, the prices of these...even for W.E. prices I thought rather steep. We were both able to park outside the hotel, free, a very unusual occurrance, but a pleasant surprise. All in all a pleasant evening, I would return."

  • "My lunch here was a disaster. On the special deal had to ask for the cocktails, then took ages. Everything took ages. Had to ask twice for the wine list (don't usually have to ask at all!). Had to ask for more bread then a small amount appeared (after ages as usual). Impossible to get a waiter's attention - usually in this kind of restaurant someone appears almost before you signal. Even had a struggle to pay the bill. Pork from the trolley was dry and overcooked."

  • "Set menu had a Scottish hint as it was Burns night, all very nice options except for Colcannon, that seemed like a bit of a cop out compared to the other offerings. The cocktails offered were excellent and very good value as part of the menu. Beautifully simple starters, beets were fresh and goats cheese perfectly ready. Lemon sole for the main was perfectly cooked, absolutely gorgeous. Staff were attentive without being over the top, really wonderful service. Very very happy."

  • "Beautiful dining room. Service attentive but bill incorrectly calculated - charging us for 3 courses from set menu instead of only 2. Always annoying. Choice is limited - choose from 2 main meal options. At 7pm lamb option wasn't available! Chicken replacement nice enough, but nothing special so quite disappointing. 3 of us chose cheese for dessert. Although listed as a single cheddar offering, we were brought a cheese trolley and offered a selection - fab! However waiter spent ages plating up our portions and my dining companion overheard comment about us not being "top table", the implication being he should not be too generous as we weren't paying full price. This is very poor from such a high class establishment. Drinks are v expensive."

  • "Our party of five had a great evening; fabulous food. Service was excellent until a waiter decided to reach across people who were still eating their main course to remove an empty wine glass. That aside, one of our party has already been back again with his wife. Will definitely go again."
    dined on 03/12/2013
  • "The ambience is nice, the food quite good but be careful of the extras which took our bill from the reasonable lunchtime offer price to over £80 for two. For example, over £5 (actually, it's over £6 including service) for an espresso is steep, even for Mayfair. I'm afraid this is to the point that I cannot recommend the restaurant, which otherwise has a lot going for it."
    dined on 22/01/2014
  • "We chose set menu and reasonably priced wines which made for a lovely evening. There was only a choice of two main courses which was a slight disappointment, I have often seen three. For quite an expensive restaurant, they made us feel very welcome in terms of service but we definitely we were eating from the set menu though they accommodated my friend's request to change the cheese in her cheese course. I suppose this could be expected but I have regularly eaten at a similar priced (hotel) restaurant and have enjoyed it more. This review does however focus on the one slightly disappointing element of an otherwise delightful evening."
