Diner Reviews
  • "Great food although selective menu- didn't allow any changes e.g swapping of salad for veg. Had a great wine choice and an excellent bottle for a very reasonable price."

  • "Went here with another couple on a Friday night, it was packed and there was a real buzz about the place. I requested a booth - which we did get, despite the obligatory phone call to tell us that they would do their best but couldn't promise anything. This is probably the nicest restaurant in Hitchin and for the surrounding areas. The food is good and fairly priced for the money. We visit regularly on Sundays with friends who have a small baby and I would recommend it as a very child friendly restaurant, they really do a lot to make everyone comfortable. Very good staff too."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "The food and service were outstanding, will definitely return soon. We had the specials, the pork belly special was amazing and should become a permenant choice on the menu, the belly and pulled pork melted in the mouth."
    dined on 05/04/2014
  • "Really great atmosphere and the food was lovely. Very helpful and friendly staff."

  • "I came to the hermitage fr a leaving do, service was brilliant and the food was delicious! Not a lot to offer on the menu at first glance but the standard of what is on offer is superb. Good value for money and brilliant atmosphere even on a Monday night! Will definitely be coming here again. Thank you."

  • "Having received several polite reminders that our table was only available for two hours and to be prompt in our arrival, it seemed a shame that service was so slow when we dined at Hermitage Road. We would have happily been in and out in an hour but had to wait much longer. We had a pleasant time; the food was satisfactory, although not quite as good as the prices would suggest. The venue is lovely and airy."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "We went to Hermitage Rd for a midweek birthday dinner for 2. We had the rib eye steak and chicken from the grill both of which were excellent. The food did take some time to arrive but the waitress kept us well informed. The prices were also less than we expected. Really good atmosphere and will definitely go back."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Great place but air con turned up too high! We went on a Wednesday evening so not too busy, been told weekends have far more of a buzz. Good food."
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "This was my second visit to The Hermitage and l was not disappointed. We were a party of 7 and went on a Tuesday evening. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and it was great to be able to see it being prepared in the open kitchen. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they were friendly and knowledgeable. The venue looks amazing and the atmosphere is great. I would highly recommend this and will hopefully enjoy many more nights here."

  • "I have always found booking a table for the Hermitage a nightmare as they have become so popular. I booking using top table no messing about had a lovely meal for two, staff have excellent customer service food was great shame about my date lol"

  • "We have dined at the Hermitage in a couple of occasions and we have always came out with the same impression: The ambience is modern and that's good for the area, as most places are pubs, they have a good bar and the cocktails are great, but I always expect more of it, the starters are normally good, but then the meat, which is the main reason why we go, it's slightly disappointing. I understand that the price falls in the value side, and it's not a premium grill, but the sizes are always a bit small and the taste of the meat is not that amazing as I would expect for the overall price. Nevertheless a great place to escape once a week for a relaxed dinner after work."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "Great tasting food at asonable prices. The mnu selection could be a little larger/more varied."
    dined on 18/03/2014
  • "We have been to the hermitage several times with large bookings for a family occasion and they have yet to put a foot wrong. The food once again was amazing and service was great. As it was my parents anniversary they even gave them a free pudding with happy anniversary on, v nice touch!"
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "This was my fifth visit to the Hermitage and every time the food has been fantastic, good choice and all of it just marvelous."
    dined on 14/03/2014
  • "Every time I've been for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks, I have had a great time at The Hermitage. Friendly staff, and comfortable yet cool surroundings only make the (already fantastic) food taste better. Though not the cheapest option, it certainly represents value for money in terms of quality."
    dined on 13/03/2014
  • "Had a good meal at the Herm last week. Tasty menu options. Drinks orders a little slow but overall experience was very enjoyable. Good table too. Not so keen on the 2 hourly slots for your table though."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "A lovely and lively night out. Good food, great staff and a good social place to go."
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "We went here for my wife's birthday and everything was impeccable - great food, superb service and wonderful ambience, an outstanding venue in this old Dance hall and a great menu - we will be back"
    dined on 18/02/2014
  • "Very enjoyable lunch with good food, friendly prompt service and a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely eat here again."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "We visit this restaurant regularly for the delicious food and great service. The unique to the area ambience has a city restaurant feel to it and a wonderful style and relaxing feel to it. Sunday lunches are superb as good as mine and the magician as table entertainment enhances the appeal. We will return!"
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Everything about this restaurant is classy. We were greeted at the door by a smartly dressed and very genial doorman before our second greeting from the hostess when we had gone up the stairs. The menu is simple and elegant; food and drink served in a very timely manner by a knowledgeable and very polite waitress. The wine was fantastic. Whilst the restaurant was busy, it wasn't too noisy nor too quiet; just a fantastic place to eat and the prices definitely reflect the beautifully cooked and presented food."
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "I have eaten here a few times now and find the Hermitage to be an enjoyable place to eat and drink. It has a great feel about it. On this occasion we brought our friends with us and they were taken with the place as well. As usual the food was excellent. It will still be my favorite place to eat and socialize."
    dined on 10/02/2014
  • "I went to Hermitage Road with two girlfriends for an early dinner. The staff were very helpful and the food was great - nothing to complain about at all!"

  • "Great time had by all. Great service even on a very busy night."

  • "The food at HR is lovely and the atmosphere was great. What really made it for me were the attentive staff, so on the ball with drinks and any questions we had about the food. I would highly reccommend this restaurant to anyone thinking of attending."

  • "Monday was a delightful night, as we had booked for a meal at The Hermitage in Hitchin. The ambience was great, drinks were awesome, meals inviting and delicious and the seating very comfortable. We loved the decor, but where we were sitting, there was quite a draft from the very large windows. Overall it was a wonderful event and all of my friends said that they had enjoyed it, as none of them had been before."
    dined on 03/02/2014
  • "The food was delicious, the service not so great, although the manager was very helpful. We waited over half an hour for a drink when we arrived (even though we had said we wanted water at the table as soon as we sat down) we then ordered our food, starter and main, which both turned up at the same time?! Not great. although food was delicious, service really let this place down."
    dined on 02/02/2014
  • "I have been to the Hermitage a few times before and it has always been outstanding. However, this time was just ok. We had oysters and the Hermitage board for starters which was lovely. Me me and my partner had steak for a main which was disappointing. The chips were really salty and my partners steak was so undercooked it put him off his dinner and it had to be sent back (this was dealt with very well). My steak was ok a little overcooked for rare but it was ok. We found the servicemon this occaision was slow. We had to ask twice for a drink and it was to get a waiter if we needed anything. Overall this visit was just ok."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "Had dinner - none of the above refers. Everyone lovely and helpful, only poor thing was service very slow the night we were there."
    dined on 29/01/2014
  • "Great venue for family Sunday lunch party. Children welcome and the staff were happy to serve their main meal at the same time as adult starters. Not everyone had the Sunday Roast but all pronounced their food as excellent. There was a good buzz but you could still hear conversation at own table. I am not a real fan of magicians but the one touring the tables was amazingly good and knew when to leave. The children loved him. Enormously impressed by the quiet efficiency of the kitchen, which was in plain view, given the fact that the restaurant was full and people continually arriving as others left. Everyone said they would go again. Only one niggle - service was slow."
    dined on 26/01/2014
  • "this bar/resterant has a great feel and very warm welcolme, the food is alway very good and the share sweat menu fab."
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "Sadly Hermitage Rd has adopted an attitude based on the service & quality when they first opened. This standard has not been maintained but they appear to think that they are the best so they don't need to try anymore. The food was mediocre, small portions & very expensive for what we had. While we will continue to use the bar I don't think we'll be rushing back for a meal anytime soon. Very sad decline especially as we try to support all of their venues in Willian, Brancaster & Bishops Stortford. :("

  • "This restaurant has a great international, modern vibe. The food and wine are great. Definitely this is the place to go in Hitchin."
    dined on 22/01/2014
  • "We normally choose to go to small cosy pubs or restaurants. When I booked a table at the Hermitage, I was not too sure whether I was making the right choice but from reading the great reviews on Trip Advisor and from a couple of friends, we decided to give it a go. I was very pleased with our choice and we will defintitely go back. They manage to turn a very large room into a welcoming restaurant and quite cosy too. It was busy when we went but the noise was ok. The food was very good. As per the service, it could do with improvement (service of drinks slow, the mussels didn't come with a bowl of water with lemon, no chocolate sauce with profiterolles, I had to ask for some) but every single waiter and waitress did their best."
    dined on 19/01/2014
  • "excellent veggie options, but small (veggie) portions, meat dishes seem to be pretty substantial"
    dined on 16/01/2014
  • "this was our third visit to the Hermitage. One of the fish options was unavailable, despite it being early on in service. The service was fairly prompt. What struck us again was the very small dessert portion sizes, and the lack of choice. We would, however, return, particularly as the ambiance is always invigorating and lively"
    dined on 12/01/2014
  • "Good service, excellent food. The high ceilings make it a bit noisy, so good for groups not so good for a romantic meal for 2"
    dined on 17/01/2014
  • "Very good main courses, especially the vegetarian sweet potato wellington. Desserts not as good but not bad. Not cheap, but good for a special occasion. Nice ambience - lively but not too loud."
    dined on 16/01/2014
  • "It was surprisingly busy at approx. 1/3 full. There was a limited specials choice but the main menu had a good array of food. My main meal seemed like it may have been standing for a short while as it was not as hot as I'd ideally have liked. We'd not have liked being sat in the central part of the restaurant with the majority of diners when full - Due to the layout we found it a little noisy. The service was just enough albeit slow at the end. Costs were reasonable with a bottle of wine starting from approx. £17 and with the overall cost of approx. £45 per head all in... Overall we would definatley dine at the Hermitage again, and would reccommend it to friends although we'd possibly avoid coming when it is bound to be at capacity / busy...."

  • "The Hermitage have oysters on the menu. Good fresh oysters and well presented! The dinner menu is very good and the pork belly ribs are outstanding. Some Iberian influence. The space is comfortable but can be a little noisy due to the high ceilings. They have a desserts selection to share, but be aware: they are good and the portions are generous! Service is spot on."
