Some of the best food that I have ever eaten and the birthday cake surprise was lovely too!!15/06/2013 00:00:00Exceptional evening at Claridge's.One always has expectations, from the lowest of the low or the highest of the high. What Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's succeeded in doing was smashing those expectations to pieces and exceeding them in a way we didn't think was possible. The service was simply faultless. The attention to detail a delight. The monkfish was cooked to perfection; the duck exquisite, the soufflé a joy & the chocolate globe simply luxurious. Did we mention all the other bits? No, we don't need to. They simply added to the evening of expectations not only met and matched, but exceeded by a mile! A good measure of a good day or night is when it is over too soon. This was one of those days. The five course menu was delicious. The cheese cart was a feast for the senses. The service was attentive without being intrusive and the pace of the dinner was perfect. I would love to have the opportunity to return to this beautiful restaurant. I was saddened to hear from the Head Waiter as we were leaving that the restaurant would be closing soon. The Gordon Ramsay Restaurant at Claridge's in London was a wonderful dining experience. Our chairs and table were positioned so that we could both face into the room, which is beautiful as is the whole hotel. Food was suitably impressive: tasty and well presented. Such a lovely space for the occasion, but has been waste without it's Michelin Star, and very overated food-wise. For example, I ordered the Ravioli starter, expecting a carbon copy of the Royal Hospital Road dish, but came up very dissapointed. Of the 7 mains available, 4 were white fish(!), another the Beef Wellington for two, leaving only a duck and venison dish for variety. Annoyingly, the Chocolate Sphere dessert from the Tasting Menu was not available a la carte. The bar was busy but not crowded.
The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful but not overbearing and helped us through the menu and wine choices making personal recommendations which was good.
Both the restaurant manager and head waiter came over and offered us birthday wishes and asked us if we would like to tour the kitchens, which we did!
After the meal we had coffees in the lounge and a personal touch of a small cake with a candle for the birthday boy.

Incredible selection of Cheeses that came in a trolley with an expert waiter who introduced all of them. For 8 pounds you get to try 5 pieces with biscuits.
Espresso very good but at £5 is the only overpriced item.
We drank a Sancerre for £45 that was delicious.

We were greeted at the door and my wife was wished Happy birthday and we were shown to an excellent secluded table. The service was immaculate and the food delicious. With dessert my wife was presented with a a small cake with a candle on it with happy birthday written in chocolate on the plate. Nothing ostentatious, vulgar or OTT , just right. The food is excellent, very tasty. It is expensive - 2 people with a bottle of water having the tasting menu cost nearly 200 pounds. That bottle of water was topped up ... Frequently. Constantly. And this is the issue with all fine dining restaurants. Sometimes, they have to let the customer fill up their own glass of water. The restaurant had what seemed like around 30 floor staff, and this felt slightly oppressive, especially in a restaurant that seats 70!
Service aside. If you get a chance to go before it closes, do it.
