A word from Ganapati Restaurant
The kitchen is the soul of a restaurant as it is of a home, providing warmth, nourishment and evocative smells. An air of expectancy surrounds the kitchen as the work of the day begins. It is a place of hard work, companionship and great rewards, and most importantly, it brings people together to feast on the results. Ganapati is the south Indian name for the elephant-headed god Ganesh. He is the well-loved remover of obstacles, with a particular fondness for sweets.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We have been to Ganapati many times and once again it didn't disappoint. We had street snacks and poppodoms to start followed by Kerala fish curry and duck curry (as recommended by the very helpful waitress). All was delicious and I'm glad we spent our anniversary evening there. "

  • "Small and cosy restaurant seating sort of similar to wagamama. Fantastic South Indian food cooked to perfection! A gem in Peckham. Now has a local takeaway outlet for those that cannot book a table."

  • "This is a restaurant that is tacked in a residential road which makes it quite special. I went there with my husband on a Saturday evening for dinner and we were very happy with the atmosphere, the service and of course the food. Food was absolutely delicious. The service was very friendly and professional. We couldn't really ask for more, everything was perfect. It was also unpretentious and everything a restaurant should be. We will definitely be back, and will also bring more people in ;)"

  • "Outstandingly well-presented Indian food, in a cosy and relaxed canteen-style environment. Top, top value for money."

  • "Not many Indian restaurants taste half like the food does in India. Ganapati is one of the few that really does. Absolutely delicious Thali with the whole spectrum of flavours that Indian food is known for and should be."

  • "Food excellent, good varied menu. Service shocking, having arrived bang on time didn't see anyone for 30 mins. Then sat with all but one main for 15 mins. Then the desert menu was brought and we were told - having again had to wait a long time to be served - that the table was needed again (we had been there just over an hour and a half!) and that all desserts would be provided in take away containers to be eaten off the premises!! To top it all off they had the cheek to complain when we didn't pay the full 12.5% they had added to the bill for 'service' without asking!! This is the second time I have had bad service here, if you go you will enjoy the food but prepare to be basically a nuisance to the staff..."

  • "Wonderful from start to finish - staff are lovely, well informed and interested, the restaurant itself is beautifully decorated with a great ambience and the food - amazing! All food beautifully cooked, inventive and accompanied by fantastic pickles/accompaniments. I had a Lamb mini-thali and it was gorgeous. There were 5 of us there for a birthday celebration - perfect night and all enjoyed thoroughly - cannot recommend strongly enough! :-)"

  • "This is a great curry house, renowned for its individuality. Food lovingly cooked, that sends the taste buds on a luscious treat."

  • "My partner is a chef so is hard to please but based on many recommendations I took him here for dinner on his birthday. The service was very attentive without being over bearing & the atmosphere was casual but still felt special. However the food was something else, we had a ginger & rum cocktail & a selection of South Indian street food to start.. the best I've ever tasted, the flavours were subtle & hot at the same time & our main dishes of duck & chicken had deep rich flavours & perfect spicing.... We finished by sharing home made yoghurt & ice cream which was to die for.... My only complaint is my own fault for overheating & feeling too full at the end but we just couldn't leave anything on our plates...."

  • "We had a delicious meal. The table by the window was cold and a little extra heating at the beginning of the evening would have been welcome. The wine was corked but handled well by the staff and not charged for. (Beer better than wine with this food). We live in Northamptonshire but return to Ganapati about twice a year when in South London. Will continue to do so."

  • "Outstanding as always. Been coming here for 4 years now and it never disappoints. Rustic, elegant, charming & wonderful S.Indian cooking and superb staff. Our very favourite restaurant."

  • "Been to Ganapati several times for dinner which is always excellent, this time I tried their outstanding lunch deal as a treat. Quality was just as good, light authentic and healthy South Indian food, and outstanding value at between £5.50-6.00 for a main during lunch time. Would definitely make this a regular lunch time spot if I still lived in the area."

  • "Fantastic authentic Indian restaurant with a great menu of South Indian specials. We have been twice and had different things which were all excellent. Small relaxed fun atmosphere."

  • "How nice to find a simple homely restaurant, with well presented delicious Southern Indian food, run & served by a friendly group of young people who know how to care for their customers, and love their job. Clearly popular with the locals, so best book well in advance."

  • "Good South Indian food. Even my wife agreed. Good value too."

  • "Ganapati is a fantastic restaurant. The menu is different to what you usually get in London Indian restaurants, but in a really good way. Choices aren't too spicy but are full of flavour. It's a very small restaurant, make sure you reserve a table."
    dined on 23/02/2014
  • "If our waitress hadn't been so zoned out (delivering pretty average, maybe even poor service) Ganapati would have scored top marks across the board. Brilliant food (and the rest of the staff were great, too). We'll definitely be back."

  • "We still can't get over how amazing our lunch was, and what incredible value. We will be back for sure."

    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "The food is lovingly prepared here, attention to detail superb and the service is consistently friendly, well informed and efficient. This restaurant goes from strength to strength and this is demonstrated by its hordes of devotees. The menu offers authentic Indian dishes prepared from scratch. As in India, the vegetarian options are plentiful and the spicing ranges from subtle to blow your head off.. It is always an enjoyable experience. The wine list is carefully created and the home made ice creams and other desserts are a definite highlight."

  • "The food was delicious and very fresh. The restaurant is very intimate and cosy but you don't feel squashed. The waiters and waitresses were delightful and helpful and it was honestly the best Indian we have ever had!"

  • "We had a nice lunch at Ganapati, eating their good value lunch menu plus a side order of a vegetable curry and a paratha. We probably could have done without the paratha. The food was very good. The venue is a little spartan - for that reason I prefer to have lunch rather than dinner there."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "Ganapati continues to be a favourite haunt for discerning foodies in SE15/22. Delicious poppadums with home-made pickles and chutneys to start, yummy curries both spicy and mild follow, with a wonderful selection of vegetable dishes, dhaals and the best paratha ever, lacy swirls of griddled tender batter.Good wine list and friendly service, but expect an occasionally noisy environment and to share a big table if you are just a couple."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "Not normal run of the mill curry restaurant - fantastic South Indian inspired menu. First time ever I have opted for a fully vegetarian meal - absolutely delicious. Aperitifs looked great too. Excellent service. Thoroughly recommend."

  • "Ganapati do a lunch time menu which is great value as well as great tasting food. Friendly staff and good service."

  • "The surroundings of this restaurant are laid back and relaxed. The service matches the surroundings being friendly and helpful but the food is the real star. Interesting flavors and different options keep us coming back time and time again."

  • "My daughter used to refuse Indian food, she now loves it. High praise indeed!"

  • "Can't fault the food - everything delicious. Very good and attentive service. Only slight niggle was a table of 5 who were very loud and using pretty offensive language - possibly the restaurant could have stepped in and asked them to tone it down. Otherwise, fabulous."
    dined on 07/01/2014
  • "A very cosy little restaurant with basic dining style and utensils. It reminded me very much of eating street food in India. The food is all basic Indian fair, simply and well executed. No grease or oil, just subtle flavours and good portions. Staff very friendly and attentive, reduced but ample wine list, enjoyed it very much."

  • "Ganapati is still the finest S Indian in S London. Fresh, delicious food served by lovely people."

  • "Another great meal at Ganapati. Thalis all around including the Mahatma Thali which one the prize. Crab Thoran was the stand out dish along with the now fabled flakey buttery paratha. Mmm."

  • "We had a lovely meal at Ganapati and will definitely be back! Food was absolutely delicious with delicate flavours blending together without overpowering one another."

  • "I've been to Ganapati several times now and never been disappointed. None of the curry house staples here - this is imaginative and tasty and apparently fairly authentic. Good selections for both meat-eaters and veggies and usually some interesting fish options too. Fairly small so booking is almost essential, but the service is good and the food fantastic, with a good selection of drinks to match. The street snacks and parathas deserve a particular mention, and there is even a range of good desserts if you have room after the mains."

  • "Ganapati is a fantastic restaurant - I have been there many times and have always been very happy with the food and service. The food is consistently great and the staff are friendly and helpful. I recommend it wholeheartedly and I have over the years recommended it to scores of people - all of whom have liked it. Long may they thrive."

  • "Small, cosy Indian restaurant serving far from your average British-Indian cuisine. A great menu, taste sensation!"
    dined on 21/12/2013
  • "This is a cosy, friendly, unpretentious neighbourhood restaurant - with the addition of really exceptional food! It is colourful and fun, with friendly staff always within eye-catching distance if you need anything. The lunch specials menu is incredibly good value; dinner offers more options and is still very reasonable. The curries are sourced in Southern India, all fairly spicy, and served beautifully with small dishes of raita and chutneys, all incredibly fresh and with very good quality, generous portions of meat and/or vegetables. Ice-creams and sorbets were home-made, deliciously refreshing, innovative flavours - the perfect finale! Big jugs of tap water provided without asking and good value wine list too."
