Diner Reviews
  • "We ate here on a Friday night. It was fairly busy but the service was excellent, the staff were quick and happy to accommodate any request. The main concern was the portion size given the prices... £14.50 for 3 scallops and £24 for 3 pieces of a seabass fillet. The accompanying vegetables were equally tiny. In the end the bill was £80 for 1 starter, 2 mains, 2 soft drinks and 2 coffees which when you leave the restaurant thinking you could eat another dinner is expensive."

  • "Great food and wine, nice service, easy going special requests. Liked the interior and the crowd, plus the location. If you are on a date you have enough privacy to have discussions just between the both of you without feeling pampered to munch. Enjoyed it a lot."

  • "Another great visit to Chiswell Street dining rooms. This time the cooking was a little too ambitious with some odd flavour combinations, but still very well executed."

  • "The service is the big problem here. Well meaning but undertrained. When we had dinner on a Friday night three of the eight starters were unavailable. Food better than average but anywhere near the bar make conversation difficult and ruins the atmosphere. Could be more than just a useful place to eat near the Barbican but it will take work."

  • "Lunch at CSDR is a great foodie experience. So often in the City the menu is bland and the same, here it bristles with game, fish, exotic meats all matched with rest service and excellent wine list. My favourite, along with the Jugged Hare of course, I choose CSDR for a more relaxed sophisticated market lunch."

  • "Conveniently close to the Barbican, this is an ideal place for a pre-theatre meal. The set menu is good value, the wine list is reasonably priced and the sevice is friendly but unobtrusive."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "The food was pretty good and the service too, but it seems like they were saving money on heating - the restaurant was cold!"
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Really nice ambiance and staff are very good. We ordered steak - quality of meat really poor."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "Great place. A shame the waiter's English is so poor he got the order wrong..."
    dined on 17/03/2014
  • "Could not really answer accurately re value as was not paying"
    dined on 17/03/2014
  • "the pre-theatre menu is very good value and it comes with Chiswell's excellent service from polite and friendly (but not overbearing) waiting staff. Beware that on Thursdays and Fridays it can get very noisy in the bar area, so a tip is to ask to be seated at the other end of the restaurant."

  • "it was a really lovely menu and the wine list is outstanding, its quite business focused but if you like CoqD youll love the dinning rooms, only small issue i have is the bucket chairs are quite snug...."

  • "I do not eat meat and unless I wanted fish there were only two options for me, a heavy pasta with a mustard sauce or a blue cheese salad. I asked for the salad as my mains our waitress stated that I had already had salad as a starter and did I really want salad again. To which I said that I did not eat meat and did not fancy any fish and there was no chicken on the menu. At this point she stated that I should eat the rabbit! I pointed out that chicken has feather and rabbit has fur and to two are not related. When the main salad came, how can I put this, it appeared as though someone had gone to the supermarket got a fairly cheap bag of salad - threw some tiny bits of cheese (from a distance) into the bowl and wanted to charge me £13.50!"

  • "2nd time I have been here and again great food. I found the menu a little limited for what I fancied this time, so had the burger which is very unlike me but it was very good. The first visit I could have eaten everything on the menu! But, nice they change it on a daily basis. By far the best Gin Mare in the city!"
    dined on 03/03/2014
  • "It is a great spot to eat and they have priced themselves for those in the city who claim back business lunches. A club sandwich and chips for 17.50 is ridiculous. However the fish is beautiful and well worth spending the money on."

  • "I have now settled on the Chiswell Street Dining Room as my venue of choice around the Barbican/Moorgate area. I had a business lunch on this occasion, when the place was full but still able to talk reasonably confidentially. The sea bass and the haddock tart were excellent. The apple strudel was also very fine if a bit on the large size and you both have to agree to have one. Wine list on an iPad can be a bit of a challenge at first but the actual list is good."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "I honk £17 for a club sandwich is rather steep - however the wine is chilled to perfection, staff are very attentive and the quality of the food is great"

  • "Chiswell Street Dining is a classy little place. Welcoming bar area and beautifully furnished dining room. Great colour schemes too. They didnt have the pork belly on the pre-theatre menu as published so I switched to the main menu. The lamb was nicely cooked and presentation on all dishes was a good standard. For me the service was the star on the night. The staff were expertly drilled and were always on hand to support you. TY CSD & TT ;)"

  • "Service was poor, our table was not ready so we had a drink in the bar. 20 minutes later still no response and it was only upon asking the Maitre D that we were remembered and suddenly our table was free. Starter (seafood souffle) was nice but luke warm. The accompanying sauce was tepid.I suspect this food had been standing in the kitchen for a while. We had to remind the waiter about our white wine halfway through the starter. Quite a wait for the main (not necessarily a problem) but no attempt to bring our red wine and we sat there without a drink for a while. We were finally bought a glass when we had ordered a bottle. The main (beef wellington) was cooked right and very nice, but the carrots were undercooked. Overall, pretty poor."

  • "It was Valentine's Day I thought a special meal would be in order. I discovered that they only give you 90 minutes (usually 2 hours?) for your table, which I managed to extend. However, two members of the waiting staff tried to hurry us up and asked us to make our minds up about our dessert after an hour (up to then the service was good)!! Also, the food was very disappointing for what I thought was a bit expensive. I had the scallops which were fine. My partner had mackerel-again just ok. However, we both had the lamb, which was a small rib and a tiny piece of "rump"- which was a huge dissappointment! Maybe we were unlucky, but I would not recommend it."

  • "We live nearby and have been regulars since it opened; Friday was very disappointing. Service was slow, my drink was forgotten until we flagged someone down (one of us had finished our starters) and then the bill had two drinks we didn't order. It used to be a place one could have a conversation, but the music is now too loud and there were some very loud tables; the staff did nothing to quiet them. We left before dessert and won't be back. It's a shame because it used to be a favourite and the food was excellent."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Great meal, excellent cocktails and reasonably priced... Will most definitely be returning."

  • "We came for a valentine dinner (friday evening), the cocktails were very good so was the bar service. The atmosphere was a bit loud but not unpleasant. The restaurant looked beautiful, the food was amazing such a shame that the service didn't match. No attention to details, service of drinks was not happening, the table was left full of crumbs, The staffs were going through the motion of service without caring about their customers. Our waitress was polite enough to us but would argue with her colleagues while serving us. Overall i feel the the waiting staff are not giving justice to the amazing work of the chefs. Will definitely comeback"

  • "Good food though limited vegetarian options, very noisy it can get very disruptive on conversations, service was very friendly but was somewhat difficult to see the waiters when you need them"
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "My partner and I went to chiswell for an early valentines day dinner. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff I were very nice. I had the home made tortellini which was fantastic. I ordered the tapioca for dessert. I didn't expect it to be very sweet but I must say it wasn't that sweet and was leaning towards savory. My partner did not have a dessert but when the bill came we had been charged for two desserts. Over all it's a lovely venue."

  • "We were celebrating our oldest daughters Masters graduation and we booked the Chiswell Street Dining Room for a late lunch after the ceremony on a recommendation and we were not disappointed. We had some drinks at the bar and our son who was 10 at the time was treated like a V.I.P. The bar staff looked after him and the rest of staff were excellent while we had our dinner. The wine selection was excellent as well. The food was of the highest standard as was the service. Highly recommended."

  • "Always impressed with the food here. Wine list never disappoints. Menu changes regularly"

  • "Ate here on Friday eve before concert at The Barbican next door.. Perfect location, great atmosphere, best service we have had in a while anywhere and the food was excellent, we both had the ore thestre menu, I had haddock tartlet , pork belly and choc marquis. Would highly recommend and will now go here every time we go to The Barbican."
    dined on 07/02/2014
  • "Excellent chateaubriand. Extensive wine list.....quite expensive. We had a good carmenere though at the right price."

  • "I really like this restaurant. Posh, modern and elegant while still being relatively informal and relaxed. Quite a lively buzz so works well for a group. Food was great and service was attentive. Would recommend."

  • "The 2 of us had a 2 course lunch with a bottle of wine between us. All very nice with good presentation and great tastes. We also shared 1 side dish (the squash one), which was delicious. We have been before and new that the quality of the food was very high, and were looking forward to the experience again. Definitely NOT the cheapest place to eat for 2 courses each as it cost £93 in total. We did have a coffee afterwards though. I love the loos here, with wonderful waterfall taps and the place seems sparkling clean (it was like this last time, so must look after it well). We will be back. Oh this lunch was 'normal price', i.e. no special deals or anything."
    dined on 20/01/2014
  • "An excellent place for a business lunch - slick service and just the right pace. The beetroot and jerusalem artichoke tart was a wonderful vergetarian option - much more exciting that the usual vegetarian fare."
    dined on 20/01/2014
  • "We had the pre-theatre menu - the food was very good and it was good value. The main menu was quite abit more expensive and the wine was generally quite pricey."
    dined on 10/01/2014
  • "lovely meal with colleagues, food, service and restaurant were excellent. Very highly recommended. Staff were extremely attentive and friendly."
    dined on 08/01/2014
  • "Seconds from the Barbican. We had the 2/3 course pre-theatre menu. Choice from 3 items in each of starters, mains, desserts was minimal but attractive. Food quality very good, portions fine for pre-T. Style of restaurant is 'London Brasserie' with welcoming bar. We are out of towners and resent 12.5% service and higher wine prices which inevitably boost the bill. As it was'early' evening the restaurant was quiet - it would be interesting to see it under pressure to see if it could deliver these high standards all the time. We will definitely use again."
    dined on 07/01/2014
  • "Food nothing to write home about - Average service. Wouldn't go back again. Will take my custome elsewhere next time"
    dined on 28/11/2013
  • "The Lemon Sole was the best Lemon Sole that we have ever tasted. Absolutely cooked to perfection. Slightly pricey, but not staggeringly so. We were going to the theatre and needed to be out promptly. The staff had a note of our request, and was prompt, attentive without being too intrusive, and very professional. The wine list on an iPad was fun too. Our only complaint (quite minor) was that the "canned music" was a little loud."
    dined on 20/12/2013
  • "The food was absolutely amazing. I have only ever eaten in this restaurant after staying in the hotel and I can tell you they do an amazing breakfast, but now I know the lunch was fantastic. What was better than the food was the service. The lady that served us was very knowledgeable and attentive and had great knowledge of the menu and the wine list. Will most definitely come back."

  • "Great if you like game but other choices as well. Lovely decor and great atmosphere. It is pricey though."

  • "I took my partner for a pre-Barbican concert meal. I had been there about two years ago but found it to be significantly improved (and it was alright when I went before). We had the £21 three course supper at 5.30 pm. We were the first diners and the bread was not ready (and one of the fish dishes was not either to the embarassment of the waiter) but otherwise it was perfect. Staff were helpful and attentive, every course was tasty, well cooked and portions not too large. Altogehter one of the best restaurants I have been too either in London or the provinces for a couple of years and I eat out at least once a week.. Will certainly go again the next time that we go to the Barbican"
