It was a long time before I returned, for no reason other than I just did not get around to it. I've been a few times now in the last 3 years; it is modern but comfortable and the food is just great. The early bird deal is good value and only requires that you sit down by 7pm and leave by 8.45, which is not that early. The dishes were well conceived, well prepared, well presented, and the tastes were just bursting out of everything. Service was a little over-attentive, but thats my own failing for not liking it....

They are still talking about the evening and the food! We loved the Smoked Salmon Scotch Egg, which was just delicious and refined. The pork belly was very tender and cooked very well, and came with beautiful cabbage. For dessert, we all tried different items, but all three of us were raving about our choices. The only downside was possibly the portion size, which was slightly too large, but we still finished it all as it was a shame not to eat! It's a touch cramped, from the entrance-hall in which you brush past coats to the waiters who have to squeeze past you as you dine (after spending their days negotiating the narrow stairs). It doesn't quite have a homely feel, but it's relatively informal for a restaurant delivering such good quality. It never disappoints - and regularly delights. Staff were extremely helpful - even phoning us before the booking to tell us of an offer we were not aware of, which we gladly took. The food is of a very high standard - it's probably just a notch down from haute cuisine fine dining, but much better than gastropub, many of which tend to charge similar prices these days for less quality. Healthy wine list, good solid menu with decent range to choose from. Meat, fish and poultry all clearly carefully chosen and fantastic desserts. We were warmly welcomed, and the quality of food and drink was superb. The full menu was offered as a lunchtime set menu for just £20 for three courses, and all three courses for both of us were imaginatively conceived and delicious to eat, easily rivalling the food I would expect from a much more expensive restaurant. Portions were ample. The same menu at the dinner price of £30 is still great value. Our pre-lunch Bloody Marys and wine were excellent too. The house wine was £4.50 for 125ml, though a wider choice of wine by the glass would have been nice. We booked in advance for a weekday lunch, although there wasn't any need to on this occasion. A decent wine list, the Clarets and Burgundies with typical restaurant mark-ups, but some interesting bargains elsewhere, I drank a Catalan red for £44, which the next day, at a business lunch in Jamie Oliver's City meat restaurant, Barbecoa, was priced at £70. exactly the same wine and vintage.
