A word from Carnevale Restaurant
Carnevale Restaurant in London's Hoxton is one of the new faces of vegetarian cuisine, serving unusual and intriguing vegetarian dishes with a Mediterranean inflection. Tucked away on a side street, this gem of a restaurant is a terrific choice for pre-concert or pre-theatre meals before heading to the Barbican or St Luke's. Carnevale is almost as popular with unreconstructed omnivores as it is with dedicated vegetarians. From the street it appears to be a tiny treasure trove of unusual and intriguing ingredients and most first time visitors are surprised to find the handful of pine tables and chairs in the back of the store, leading out to a cool and shady courtyard. Equally astounding is Carnevale’s wide choice of Mediterranean style meat-free food – sharing plates, snacks and full, hearty meals – with plenty of nut-free, gluten-free and vegan choices too. And Carnevale complements its meat-free menu with an interesting wine list of organic and local labels. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was amazing; absolutely flawless. The wine was good also. It was a shame that we were the only people in there though. I would definitely go again though."

  • "This place was highly recommended to me so I thought I would give it a try as only recently I had decided to change my diet. The service was attentive a friendly the food was out if this world and very large portions. I practically ate my whole days worth of food in 1 sitting and I did not have desert. Servings are very generous. Definitely coming back for sure."

  • "We were promised 40% off the bill yet we never got this, and didn't realise until I had got home and reviewed my booking"

  • "Not too keen on the gnocci, but the ravioli was lovely and service attentive. Lovely vegetarian choices and freshly prepared. Simple surrounderings bordering on basic, but all part of the charm."

  • "A little disappointing but acceptable.Somehow the meal was not as good as last time . It was still reasonable with the 40% discount."

  • "Nice food, good vegan options. Well presented and tasty."

  • "Rossini was a gourmet and great lover of life. Although a dedicated meat eater, even he would have relished this imaginative and tasty veggie food."

  • "I came with a friend on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was all but deserted, so there wasn't much of an atmosphere. That said, the staff were friendly, attentive and efficient and the food pretty good. I'd go back."

  • "Delicious vegetarian food for people who don't usually like vegetarian food! Fresh, healthy, interesting flavours. Nothing stodgy or boring about this food! : )"
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "Great fresh basic food - be prepared to wait as they have a market stall outside so selling more to passing custom than restaurant diners. Plus : deli plate tasty basic & healthy, Ismile & Allesandro great staff. Negative: seems the 'discretionary service' not so -I was ready to tip on my own choice however to remove service & pay separate in cash was treated with wall of difficulties."

  • "Love here especially the clean, bright and fresh food. Fan of the deli plate - tend to order 2 as so moreish (carrots, brocolli, beetroot faves). Never seen a bad dish here would convert many carnivores. Only wished I lived nearer. Only downside on this visit was being told I couldn't have a bigger table as fully booked yet 1 - 2 hours later the 'bigger tables' were still unoccupied. I even offered to move back to smaller table should it get busy. On this occasion understaffed yet Alesandro & Ismile worked wonders & ensured all was great with the food. Top marks to the staff. Please just seating policy perhaps needs a rethink?"

  • "We all chose different meals and each enjoyed - aubergine, ravioli and potato cakes. Wine (house white) excellent. Atmosphere a bit stark and quiet but got better as evening went on. Waitress a bit unengaged. Would go again for informal dining"

  • "A fantastic discovery and wonderful evening was had at Carnevale. We enjoyed the stylish vegetarian food, organic wine and great service. The food is wonderfully presented and you could tell great care had been given to create a delicate fresh tastes. We have been twice in one week and strongly recommend Carnevale. Buon appetito!"

  • "Very small and informal (its almost like being in someone's dining room in their kitchen!). One waitress who was very friendly and efficient. shared a starter, which wasn't that special, (lots of dips and no pittas or bread to dunk in them) but the vegan sausage and mash was excellent, and the vegan gluten free chocolate cake was truly amazing! Really good organic wine too."

  • "Fab Resturant no frills down to earth great food, good value for money"

  • "Very nice place - although quite empty when we arrived at 8pm during the week. It filled up slowly. Waitress was lovely, food was amazing, great value for money, house wine was light, tasty and cheap. Went there with my parents (who are not vegetarians) and they both said it had been a long time since they had something that tasty and sophisticated to eat without spending fortunes! Excellent value for money, will definitely go again!"

  • "Enjoyed returning here as knew fresh & simplistic. Not overdressed & great value esp. with 40 % off via Toptable. Enjoyed deli plate as allows you to chose variety of tastes - lovely Broccoli (with chillies, lemon zest & olive oil) Beetroot (with chopped watercress, chives, honey, balsamic vinegar & walnut halves) and Carrot (with toasted mustard seeds, mint & lemon dressing). Enjoyed so much ordered twice. Only confusion was regarding green beans - 1st told no longer sell, 2nd told sell but non in stock & 3rd time finally managed to order these. Memet (owner) runs rustic basic yet successful place, small but relaxing. Alessandro waitress a gem to boot. Cant wait to return again."

  • "My family were visiting London on Valentine's day weekend and given we're all vegetarians, I thought Carnevale would be a great spot. I booked the table (for 5) on the evening of Valentine's day and we arrived to find that the only choice we had was the (somewhat expensive) Valentine's day set menu. I asked the waitress if that was the only option and she told us that it was, but that the menu was exactly the same as it was normally (only that we had to have 2 courses). Given we only wanted a main course, we had to leave."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "This is a great little vegetarian restaurant - not fancy but just solid tasty food. A great little find in the city."
    dined on 13/02/2014
  • "We went for dinner before going to the Barbican theatre. Unlike many other restaurants nearby, Carnevale was open on a Saturday night! We had a 40% discount on food if we ordered main courses and dessert. Our party of 5 enjoyed all of our flavoursome main dishes, and the desserts were lovely, too. We will definitely be going back."
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "I have been to Carnevale a few times now. The food is delicious and a great value at 40% discount. The service was very good, the lady was able to recommend different dishes. The only thing i would say is would be good to see the menu change as its been the same for a while now."
    dined on 06/02/2014
  • "Completely unpretentious, but truly delicious vegetarian food. This is my second visit and I'll definitely be back!"
    dined on 04/02/2014
  • "Carnevale was a welcoming haven on a rainy January evening, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was good - not spectacular but tasty and filling. The halloumi salad was particularly nice. I'd go again."

  • "I was disappointed with every aspect. Restaurant is tiny with no effort on the decor. Our seats were in the conservatory area-lovely in the summer, but not when its 6 degrees outside. the waitress curtly told us it was the same temp as the 'indoor' restaurant- shame about the draft! we ate dinner with our coats on. Even with 40% off the meal was overpriced at £12.50 for a main- which was not filling enough. The kids also had to order 2 courses otherwise the whole table would not be able to have 40% off...no kids menu The food was luke warm, waitress was abrupt bordering on rude. food flavours were poor. rissotto too cheesey. aubergine croquettes too greasy, sausages too sweet. there are much better places in London."
    dined on 01/02/2014
  • "The lovely young woman who served us last Friday night was truly the best waitress we have had in ages--completely available and helpful despite the fact she seemed to be serving the whole restaurant. The food was fine--risotto tasteless and mediocre, chocolate cake didn't taste that chocolatey. If we hadn't received the top table discount, I would have been quite disappointed in the value."
    dined on 31/01/2014
  • "Veggie restaurants can be a mixed bag, but Carnevale was a lovely suprise, the food was a step up from some of the more hippy orientated places where whatever you order ends up tasting like vegetable curry. I had the meze starter, which was very generous and authentic tasting. In fact all the dishes were very large portions. The bill was very reasonable with the top table deal, although prices without were fair, but I wouldn't say cheap. If you are looking for a solid vegetarian meal and have an empty stomach, I would recommend Carnevale"
    dined on 25/01/2014
  • "I visited Carnevale at lunchtime on a weekday with my mum. We really loved the freshness of the food, you can taste the goodness! The cost of 2 courses plus soft drinks was just £15 each on the toptable 40% off deal, not much more than buying a posh pie from White cross Market outside! We will go again!"
    dined on 24/01/2014
  • "My daughter is not only vegetarian, but has a serious nut allergy and is lactose intolerant. We are usually grateful when we dine out to find one dish which she can safely eat, but here she had a choice of both mains and desserts! We, as veggies with no allergy/intolerance problems, had a great choice of really interesting meals (which in our non-veggie days we would have found equally appealing) which were well cooked and presented. The restaurant is small, and on entering it you might not be very impressed - until you are enveloped in the thoughtful and attentive service, which is the other great strength of the venue. We were in a hurry to get to the theatre, and the waitress was very helpful in this - as she was in everything else."
    dined on 22/01/2014
  • "I used to love this restaurant. Main courses still tasty and interesting but portions seem to be getting smaller (an awful lot of salad on the plate) and prices not cheap. I always find the desserts disappointing. If not for the 40% offer it would be a very expensive vegetarian option."
    dined on 18/01/2014
  • "There were some exciting dishes on the menu - a menu where you read the options and want most of it but know that a) that's just plain greedy b) cannot give way to gluttony and c) impossible. The waitress offered some bread after we were seated and given olive oil to dip it in. Some folk might prefer their baked goods cold I would have preferred some salt and butter and for warm bread instead of cold. The only criticism of my main (stuffed aubergine) had a tad too much cheese. The dessert was awful - i had the crumble and was served with instant custard - it was like a runny soup. I was given about two table spoons worth and the crumble itself was incredibly doughy. I would go back for starters and mains but definitely skip the desserts!"

  • "We had lovely pasta with lentils and pumpkin gnocchi at this veggie restaurant. Atmosphere is not so great and wines are probably a bit overpriced but overall a good meal!"
    dined on 04/01/2014
  • "I booked for 4 veggies on new years eve, the online menu lured us to Carnevale from the outskirts. Did't expect a party, not even a special dinner arrangement. But this restaurant is really minimalistic when it comes to decoration and consideration of detail. Some may like it. But I believe with a little phantasy and not a lot of investment the place could gain significantly in attractiveness. This would probably bring more additional guests than sticking to practicality only and giving a big food discount. The choice of food is definitely good and so was the quality of what we chose and the service. My highlight was the crème brûlée, and I also liked the white house wine."

  • "Booked a table for 2 as I went for a lovely meal here a few days before this 2nd booking. A friend had come over from Berlin, so I thought it an ideal place to eat as she is Vegetarian, I emailed the restaurant to see if they were open Xmas eve, but no reply so rang, but no answer on 4 separate occasions. Decided to book a table via the toptable system on the website, all sorted, table for 2 for Xmas eve 1:30pm Got there on the day and the place is all closed up and my German friend not at all amused !!! Customer Service = 0 I ate at the restaurant the previous week and had 5 out of 5 service and 5 out of 5 for food, but they seriously need to address their email and website functionality."

  • "Such a friendly and fantastic place to eat. The staff were accommodating and friendly and the food was exquisite. The decor is simple and understated. The discount made an already reasonably priced menu fantastic value. What a healthy gem!"

  • "40% toptable discount main attraction plus rustic filling veggie food to boot. Portion size much less than last visit so a little surprised. Nonetheless when mentioned this they were happy to readdress. Love the deli plate - fresh & simple yet surprisingly tasty. Restaurant had only 4 other diners there on visit so again surprised when told unable to occupy bigger table due to bookings. Two hours later kitchen closed yet no more diners arrived. I guess management rules. Would completely return to Carnevole due to simplicity & price of delicious salads. Staff serving are complete gems - teresa and the lovely lady from Turkey - friendly yet unobtrusive."

  • "Essentially, this is now one of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is magnificent and extremely well priced (before our 40% discount); and the selection is fantastically varied. The waitress was a bit slow at times, but she was alone with 10 tables to wait on. It was also a bit chaotic. For example, I asked for an ice coffee, and she gave me a cold latte. Instead, I plucked up the courage to ask her for something else - a scrumptious homemade lemonade - and she was very apologetic, turned it into a bit of fun, and didn't charge us for drinks on the final bill. Seriously recommended."

  • "Super tasty and really good value : ) Really excellent srvice."

  • "Small and rather shabby looking, could do with a little TLC in the looks department. But nice varied menu and good value (especially with the toptable 40% off food deal). Personable service, relaxed and enjoyable, even for non-vegetarians."
    dined on 09/12/2013
  • "The vegetarian food was outstanding and the choice was excellent. Salad leaves were fresh and had a good taste and the halloumi wasn't over salty (which does happen)."

  • "Wonderful food, I'm not a vegetarian and I loved it - the service was brilliant, the waitress helped to make our night. The ambience leaves a little to be desired, but there was a big noisy group next to us, so it may have been cosier without them."
