The Brigade Bar and Restaurant is setting the London restaurant scene on fire. Located in the old fire station, built following 1861’s famous Tooley Street Fire and leading to the creation of the first London fire brigades, The Brigade Bar and Restaurant is concerned not just with eating but with bringing people together to build a community enjoying new experiences together. While The Brigade, along with the Beyond Food Foundation, offers catering apprenticeships to the vulnerable, cookery courses, cookery schools for the keen and private dining for the VIP-minded, the centre of this fantastic venue is definitely the bar and restaurant. A sensory experience, guests are met with the aromas of tempting fresh cooking on arrival, the gentle buzz of conversation and attractive, modern surroundings creating a relaxed feel.   • "Booked to dine with Husband and our 6 year old who is Fire Station obsessed, but wasn't really expecting the place to be hugely kiddie friendly. Staff were great with him, paper, crayons, lots of chatting to him, really impressed. No set kids menu but they offered a smaller portion of several main menu items which I always think is nicer anyway. He polished off most of a rib eye steak plus half a portion of rhubarb doughnuts. Food is simple but fabulous quality. We arrived early for a 12.00 booking which I think threw staff off track a bit, but service was overall very good. Would happily return with or without small person in tow."

  • "My wife and I booked a table for her birthday. The menu is extensive and we were spoilt for choice. The drinks menu is also extensive. The food was fresh and very tasty. We tried the signature burger and it was excellent. The burger however was on the rarer side (which I didn't mind) but that was the only downfall. Had two for one and it was excellent value."

Three of us were dining so not the best for a 2-4-1 offer but we shared two starters and two deserts then had three mains and a bottle of wine and the cost was still £120 with the offer. We enjoyed the evening but I wouldn't go back if there wasn't an offer on."

We had a table near the open kitchen area which was fine, always good to see the cooking being done. The service was excellent, we were swiftly shown to our table. The restaurant was busy but neither too loud or too busy. The food was very good, with some interesting items on the menu. With the 2 for 1 offer the value was fantastic, to be honest it would have been good even with the offer. Will definitely be going back"

However, the fish in my fish and chips was tasteless underneath the batter. We also waited 15 minutes at the end of the meal for tea that did not turn up, having already had to grab a member of the waiting staff in order to pay."

The food is excellent, it has a varied menu, with interesting and different choices as well as recognisable standard fare, plus truly fabulous side dishes. The desserts are to die for. The wine is reasonably priced. The restaurant has a buzz to it. Nonetheless, it is not perfect. It's a bit hit and miss service wise. You often don't get your side dishes at the same time as your meal (or you don't get them at all) and if you order tap water, you never get a top up. It is best not to sit near to the bar area when it is full - it is very noisy. However, in comparison to many of the other restaurants nearby (over priced and poor quality tourist places, or city pin stripe) it is an absolute gem."

  • "We keep coming back to Brigade for 3 reasons - the food is good and reasonably priced for the area, the service is excellent and their community project of bringing in homeless people and training them is admirable. TT 2-1 offer is also worth having. The mushrooms on sour dough toast are a must-have though the salmon and pork terrine were good too. The steak was good, the artichokes tasty but the salmon Caesar very rich. hence too full for pudding which was a shame because they are very good. All in all a very nice night. I'm sure we'll be back."

  • "From the moment we arrived we were treated really well by courteous, professional and friendly staff. My parents we visiting us. For my fathers quantity is important and he was more than happy with his perfectly cooked, large Rib eye. for my mother quality is important and She queried the cut and the staff were brilliant. I have never experienced such a friendly and positive response to query. The chef cooked more fillet & delivered it himself, with a smile. The sides were all delicious, particularly the red cabbage slaw. We even got fried onions which are not in the menu. For dessert the cappuccino creme brûlée is must! a fabulous fining experience that I would reccomend to everyone. I will be returning, that is for certain!"

  • "We had booked a 2 for 1 deal at Brigade for dinner following an early evening meeting. First impression was not brilliant as the bar area was very busy and noisy. We were asked to wait for two minutes while our table was prepared while we ordered a beer - Greenwich Meantime on tap - and a glass of wine. We were then taken to our table only to be told by another server that we couldn't sit there, please go back to the bar and wait. Close to walking away time. After five minutes we were taken to a better table and the maitre d' recovered the evening by offering us our drinks on the house and a bottle of wine for our dinner. Brilliant work but a shame he had to do it. Food was superb, wine good and the dining area much quieter and calmer."

That does pose another problem as the menu was fantastic and it was hard to choose to start with so there may a couple of visits required. I don't often say that. The seafood cocktail to start was one of the best my date has ever eaten. The ambiance is the only thing that doesn't make me rate Brigade more highly. Its a bit of a noisy, organised kind of choas, especially on a Thursday or Friday with the front bar making it that way which detracts from the restaurant experience slightly. It certainly won't stop me going back though for some of the best food I've had in SE1."

  • "Met a friend for a Friday night catch up. Being so close to London Bridge Station, the bar was packed but found the bistro easy enough through the crowd. The service was prompt and the Argentinian Malbec was superb. We both opted for the calves liver with mash potatoes and fell silent as we devoured it. Especially that hermitage butter. I would put that with everything. So Yummy. Neither of us wanted a dessert, but couldn't resist the sound of raspberry parfait with meringue. It was as light as a feather. The service was at a good pace and it was nice to be able to sit and slowly finish our bottle of wine and have a great conversation without the feeling of being rushed out of your seat especially on such a busy night."

It was noisy & cramped so we complained & did get moved to a proper table, but it wasn't a good start to the evening. My 2nd complaint only applies to a small no. of people but I think it's relevant. I'm vegan & was told all they could do was a green salad (OK) but what arrived was just a plate of rocket. It was the worst vegan option I've ever been given. Even the waitress was embarrassed & offered to take it back before I'd even said anything. She returned with the rocket plus some tiny slices of beetroot, carrot & tomato. I know vegan's tricky, but this chef should have been able to do better than that!"

The restaurant is a social enterprise, training young chefs and contributing to work with the homeless which was an interesting slant. Food was really great - seasonal, fresh and interesting. Highly recommend the shepherds pie/lavender mash!!"

  • "I booked at Brigade Bar & Bistro for a celebrational lunch. We took advantage of the 2 for 1 main course offer through toptable. We were greeted with a friendly smile and taken to our seat. Our coats and bags where taken kindly by the staff. We ordered a bottle of champagne along with some bread (including Gluten Free) and warm olives to start the lunch off. We ordered our main and I can highly recommend their burger with chips (cheesey) it comes also with tendor Ox tail on top of the burger. The other dishes we had where fish and chips, liver and bacon, makrel salad. All where truly delcious! We finished our lunch with a great full bodied round of coffees. This is a great place to eat, the staff are very good and the food was amazing."
