Blackfriars Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Lovely food and friendly service.
This is the third time I have visited this wonderful restaurant for lunch. My husband and I are planning on an evening return.
Friday night with girls!
Booked after having had great meal last year! Everything was great! Food, service and beautiful surroundings made for great night with good friends.
Brilliant as always
We attended on Friday 27th November for a meal. Took advantage of the happy hour offer. Three courses, all absolutely fantastic as always. The service was great. I love the fact that the staff are very attentive without being overbearing. It's my favourite restaurant in a city where we are spoiled for choice these days!
I can't believe I'm a 40 year old food loving Geordie and I have never been here before!! Gorgeous intimate restaurant with absolutely amazing food. Truly lovely - would recommend to anyone.

Delicious food, and excellent service. Slick without the pretence.
Great Sunday lunch
Excellent Sunday Lunch , we all had beef and had the choice of whether we like it pink or well done , which was perfect as we prefer pink ! Possibly the best roast potatoes I haven't cooked myself and proper gravy . We also managed decent puddings . We would definitely return
Go to place for special occaisions
I've been to this restaurant many times and it rarely disappoints. On the few occasions my wife didn't fancy or couldn't eat (due to allergy) the vegetarian option the kitchen has happily prepared a specific meal for her. The waiters are also as enthusiastic about the beer choices as they are about their wine.
Rather eating than shopping!
Everytime we visit Newcastle we have to dine at BF. Delicious Food and a very helpful and polite staff, the surroundings are also very nice. See you Next time when we are travelling from Norway :o) Best wishes, Marit and Peder
Special offer set menu
Met up with some friends for dinner- having not been to BlackFriars for years.... we went for the set menu (2 courses for £15). The food, service, staff and ambience were great. Staff were knowledgeable about the food options and also the wine - and what would work with the food- quite a refreshing change. In addition to the fact that we weren't chased out by a certain time, so we could finish our coffee and conversation- great! I'll definitely be going back and happy to recommend.
We love this resteraunt
Fantastic resteraunt it does a great value lunch and wonderful place for a romantic dinner. I love the local produce and game you get on the menu. One of the best resteraunt so in Newcastle
I have been to Blackfriars many times and myself, friends & family are never disappointed with any aspect of dinning there. The food, staff and service are second to none. The quality of the food is excellent and all ingredients are sourced locally. The early bird menu is wonderful value, and because it is very central to the city it is a great choice of venue.

wonderful warm ambiance and food of the highest quality. been a couple of times recently and it has been first class with a careful balance of service and being left alone. Could be just the sort of place you could fetch someone to ask them that very special question!!
A little gem hidden in Newcastle
Fantastic place serving beautifully presented delicious food
Birthday celebrations at Blackfriars
Our experience at Blackfriars was fabulous. We had booked to celebrate my son's 21st and everything was exceptional, pre dinner drinks, the food which was tasty well cooked and presented and the service was helpful but not intrusive.
friend's birthday meal
Good choice of food from set early evening menu. Very friendly staff and good service. Wines expensive. Service charge automatically added.
It has been difficult to choose something from the menu: every course looks tasting, inviting and perfectly balanced. And it is actually. Amazing fish and always fresh ingredients from local farms. I love this place. Definitely recommended.
Food was very good - disappointed that they did not have the beer that I chose from the drinks menu and very surprised that they did not have any limes for the G&Ts. Even more surprised that they hadn't gone to one of the local shops to buy one. Maybe think twice about going to this restaurant again, which would be a pity because the food is good. Need more attention to detail I think.
Excellent food and great dining experience. Would recommend for a romantic meal or special occasion. Would've liked to have been sat a little further away from the entrance but that is a minor quibble. Excellent service with staff always on hand to help with questions. Not my first time visiting Blackfriars and won't be my last.
The staff at Blackfriars were very friendly and attentive. We were able to order 45 minutes before our booking time due to arriving early and everything was brought out quickly so no waiting around. The food was beautifully presented and of exceptional quality, it was definitely worth the money.

It was a lovely overall experience , with very atmospheric surroundings, attentive staff and good quality food served well and with lots of flavour. I am already looking forward to my next visit
Superb, as always!
We spend a weekend in Newcastle a few times each year, and always book dinner at Blackfriars, preceded by Geordie G&Ts all round. We were there on Friday and had a lovely evening. Service was friendly and prompt, food and wine were delicious and the bill was reasonable. We'll be back soon!
Lovely meal on Friday night to celebrate a birthday. Chose the set menu which had lots of choice and was great value! Very friendly and attentive staff! Would happily return and recommend to others!
A Good Birthday Meal
We had a Birthday meal for our (New) Daughter-in-Law and all aspects of the venue deserve to be commended. The service was excellent, the food and choice on the Set Menu was more than sufficient and the price overall about right. Excellent ambiance in a medieval atmosphere.
Excellent service, atmosphere, and food....
Excellent service, atmosphere, and food. A hearty modern British menu with enough variety to cater for a wide range of tastes.
Unfortunate start to the meal when the waiter tipped the Kir Royale all over the table and us. Most of the food was really delicious but I didn't like the combination of flavours in my starter (scallops with artichoke puree) - slightly sweet and tasteless. However have been before and thought the food was outstanding. So possibly just bad choice on my part.
Spent a gift voucher for a gourmet meal for myself (vegan) and meat eating partner. Relaxing atmosphere, excellent food and first class service. In addition to menu choices was offered additional vegan dish if preferred.
Good food, lovely staff who made us very welcome
The Sunday lunch was good and the staff are amazing (welcoming, helpful, answer every query, very attentive, etc - a huge asset to the restaurant). The only problem was the length of the wait for lunch to arrive; it was busy but they must be used to it! Still, if you have time for a leisurely Sunday afternoon it's worth it.
Went for our wedding anniversary and had a fantastic night, great food and staff can not do enough to please you. Atmosphere very relaxed but buzzing will be going back soon a gem in the city centre
Lunch, 10 October
4 of us visited for lunch on 10 October. The restaurant was fully booked by people attending the international rugby match, all of whom wanted to be served as quickly as possible. The service was outstanding - brisk, attentive and efficient, yet at no time did we feel rushed. Staff were courteous, friendly and helpful at all times. The food was almost as good - my pork belly was perfect - tender and succulent, with not too much fat. My friends were also appreciative of their main courses - Pan Haggerty and chicken respectively. And I enjoyed my singin' hinnies for pudding almost as much - not too heavy, nor too sweet. And an impressive range of drinks to accompany the meal. Excellent value in a delightful atmosphere (despite being full the restaurant felt very calm and relaxed and not at all noisy as busy restaurants so often can be). Very highly recommended
A birthday treat!
Four of us went to Blackfriars restaurant for a birthday meal, what a treat! The staff were friendly and attentive and more than happy to answer questions about the menu. The bill was reasonable when the quality of the food, wine and service was taken into account. Of the starters that we tried the Northumbrian ham hock terrine was the best, the home-made peas pudding a great addition to the dish. For mains it was Northumbria’s time to star again, with the Northumbrian shoulder of lamb Navarin and the Northumbrian ribeye steak coming out as the favourites. Petit fours and a glass of Lindisfarne mead were a lovely way to finish off the meal, but hands down the best dish of the evening was the sticky toffee pudding, yummy salted caramel goodness that melted in your mouth. I would travel up to Newcastle just to go back to Blackfriars to have this pudding!
Great place to eat
We came here for a meal before a World Cup rugby match so had limited time - service was brilliant, we at no time were rushed but yet it was perfectly efficient. And the food was really interesting with lots of local ingredients. A great historic building too!
was our first visit, nothing else can be said other than outstanding in all areas. No hesitation in recommending. Will be back
In planning a visit from America, I stumbled upon a review of this restaurant. Based on what I read, I decided we had to go and am so glad we did. The historic setting is beautiful and made for a great "vacation date." The food was amazing. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect by "traditional British" food, but apparently I'm a fan. So many menu options that looked delicious. We had a full 3 courses (a la carte, though the set menu is a wonderful bargain) and loved everything. Our server was fantastic - she had a full house, especially with those of us in for the rugby - and managed with grace. My only regret is that we weren't there long enough to go back; too many dishes I would have loved to try let alone attend any of their special events. Newcastle, you have a gem in Blackfriars!
Lots of choice on a resonably priced set menu. Ate lunch with a friend and loved it. Sea salt in the butter a nice touch. We will be back to sample an evening menu.
Blackfriars is excellent
I've been here a few times for special occasions and this time was Sunday lunch. On paper it could be any Sunday lunch but as reliable as ever, Blackfriars had everything perfect and took the Sunday lunch standard up to a new level. Highly recommend.

Great service, delicious dinner and warm ambience. Stunning historical location and superb restaurant.
HAPPY EXPEREIENCE OF GOING TO THIS LOVELY PLACE
Again, the whole experience for my husband and I was a perfect evening of wining and dining. I saw the same care given to every customer entering the restaurant. The food was excellent and the choice of wine with the meal superb. The joy of sitting in a restaurant with no music was, for use, magical. We could actually hear each other talk. We would highly recommend the restaurant and are glad we found it.
Food Excellent, Staff friendly and good atmosphere. Nice place for lunch and very reasonable.
Blackfriers for Lunch
We were a large group booking for lunch, eating in the banqueting area. The atmosphere & setting was great, with 3 other large groups adding a nice ambience. The service was smooth especially with 16 guys all selecting various ales & wines! The waitress was very helpful and knew her recommendations! The food (pre-ordered from the set menu) was fantastic and pretty good valve, though I would have preferred the main course to have been a more realistic size! A great location, building & experience.

Very enjoyable meal well served by attentive staff, although adjoining large groups were fairly noisy!
