Blackfriars RestaurantFirst Visit and We Will be BackHadn't visited Blackfriars before and had heard mixed reviews about it. However we booked for Sunday lunch and can't speak highly enough of it. The food, service and ambience were absolutely fantastic; relaxed but professional and incredibly attentive. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't yet been.19/05/2013 00:00:00Lovely Sunday LunchGreat service and lovely food, the staff were very attentive19/05/2013 00:00:00Romantic meal for TwoMet by friendly staff and made to feel welcome right away. The service was second to none and the food was a taste sensation. The atmosphere was very cosy and romantic.
All in all very impressed with Blackfriers, would highly recommend to anyone and cannot wait to return again.18/05/2013 00:00:00Great food, lovely atmosphereGreat setting in the ancient Blackfriars monastry looking on to a calm and tranquil grassy quad. I had rump steak form the lunchtime set menu. It was excellent. My companion had equally enjoyable fish. All great value. Lovely staff.17/05/2013 00:00:00This was my second visit withinThis was my second visit within eight days and was simply superb went with my daughter on this occassion the time previous with my hubby and this is our favorite now we had the early evening menu which is only three courses for £18 !! but is better then some al a carte i hav had in other restaurants will definatelt be returning to sample the al a carte in a few weeks when my hubby is home.. the staff are fabulous weel done blackfriars17/05/2013 00:00:00Food for celebrationWe have been going to black friars for special occasions for the last 6 years. We usually go for our anniversary but this year my fiancé forgot (!) so I had to make do with a birthday celebration instead! We have also been for Sunday lunch and I can honestly day it was one of the best Sunday lunches I have ever had. The food and the staff are fantastic. It is a little on the pricey side but the quality of the food is always excellent.14/05/2013 00:00:00A grand evening.......was had by all. The food and service are both outstanding as is the child friendliness.
My brother and his wife joined us for dinner and they both really enjoyed it. They live in the South of France, she is French, and not easily pleased by food in the UK :)
If you are looking for good food in Newcastle at a reasonable rate try the Set menu. Good value methinks!13/05/2013 00:00:00Great food, great serviceFood was amazing, a really good array of options to suit all tastes. The kitchen was very accommodating to my slightly fussy friend. The service was brilliant and the staff were very attentive. Prices could be a little cheaper to be ideal but I didn't mind paying what I did as I couldn't fault the food quality or experience at all. Only suggestion would be to incorporate a cocktail menu to extend the range of drinks offered from the bar.11/05/2013 00:00:00Excellent choice againMy husband took his fussy father - who could not fault blackfriars. Well done again!08/05/2013 00:00:00One of the BestI have now been to this venue quite a few times and have never been disapointed. I would say that if you want a very special meal or just a casual one this is the place to go07/05/2013 00:00:00Girlie meet up.Having previously visited this restaurant I recommended it for one of our regular girlie catch up evenings. None of them had visited before and some were a bit dubious as they had heard it was a little pricey. However, from walking through the door they were impressed. The ambiance is friendly and relaxing and we were directed to our seats and quickly made to feel comfortable and special. We ordered from the generous selection of food on the early bird menu which is very reasonably priced especially as the food when it arrived was amazing. There were no empty plates following any of the 3 courses that we devoured. All the food was amazingly tasty, well portioned and cooked to the specified requests. We will definitely be visiting again.07/05/2013 00:00:00Sunday LunchLovely meal, good selection on menu. Outstanding value.
Relaxing atmosphere.05/05/2013 00:00:00This was the second time I'veThis was the second time I've visited this month. This time my wife and I both chose the fixed menu £18 for 3 courses. All 3 courses were excellent and proved to be very good value for money. The Rump Steak was particularly good and I would recommend this to anyone. No doubt we will return.03/05/2013 00:00:00I will miss this placeI am just about to move home to Scotland and Blackfriars is one of the main things I will miss about Newcastle! Always amazing food, its got amazing variation and brilliant vegetarian options. I could quite happily take one of your chefs away with me...!! The staff are friendly too which is such a welcome change to the modern level of customer service which is generally pretty poor nowardays. The staff here smile at you and chat. It is definitely an exceptional place. Highly recommended!30/04/2013 00:00:00A lovely meal...A frequent diner here, it's always lovely - a different menu every time, food always excellent, service is lovely, they don't hurry you out, a really good experience...29/04/2013 00:00:00Definitely worth a visit,Definitely worth a visit, we had the three course fixed menu and the food was beautiful, attentive (but not overly so) staff, one of the best meals I've had in ages.26/04/2013 00:00:00Early Bird MenuThe early bird menu offers great choice and value fro money. The food itself was beautifully presented and tasted amazing. The setting is great and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Will be going back asap!25/04/2013 00:00:00So pleased we came to BlackfriarsIt has been at least 10 years since I ate here when I booked a private room upstairs for a Board Meeting and enjoyed lunch in the restaurant. My wife has never been so for our wedding anniversary I chose to return here. I will not wait long to go back.
From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a smile and immediately shown to our table. Even though it was early evening the place was buzzing. The food and service throughout was excellent and testimony to our delight my wife booked another table there and then to return with a friend.25/04/2013 00:00:00Excellent Value!Thank you for a wonderful meal! Service was outstanding and the food was beautiful and extremely tasty. We have already reccomened to friends and family and are planning on returning very soon.20/04/2013 00:00:00Always a great dining optionHaving visited this restaurant a number of times, we are frequently delighted by the constantly evolving menu. We love also that the food is locally sourced!19/04/2013 00:00:00Reading the reviews paid offStaying in Newcastle as a visitor for just 2 days and both of us being a bit on the foody side we were looking for somewhere that we could get good value from. The reviews on Trip Advisor would appear to suggest that Blackfriars was the place for us and so it turned out. Although the food was really good it was the excellent service that really made the trip special for us, the staff going that extra mile wherever possible and making the event really special. They were friendly and helpful but not in your face the whole time and made some special touches that showed they could be flexible because the customer is paramount.19/04/2013 00:00:00Great when something went wrongWe were there for a pre-theatre meal. The food was excellent: we like the slightly quirky menu and drink suggestions ("a Geordie G&T"). My wife ordered sea bass (I think) fillet on a spelt risotto. There was no mention of goat's cheese in the menu, but it certainly contained some. She hates goat's cheese, and it flavoured the whole dish. Without any fuss the dish was immediately taken away and replaced in about ten minutes with a delicious, goat-free (!)version . A crisis really well handled. When you're treated like that you tend to come back to a place - as we shall.18/04/2013 00:00:00Great!Great food and service. Best meal we have had in Newcastle for ages. Busy and had to book In advance. Would definitely recommend.13/04/2013 00:00:00Brilliant BlackfriarsThis is now my third visit to Blackfriars, and as always, it was superb. I came as a party of 6; 4 of whom had never been to Blackfriars before, and they too have said they would definitely return. The food was lovely - the party had rabbit, pork and steaks and these dishes were all devoured (plates completely emptied) as were the desserts. Customer service was great, as it always has been every time I have gone. Last, but not least, the restaurant was not too noisy (I could hear my family speak) despite it being quite busy, and the decor - I love it!13/04/2013 00:00:00Everything we had was outstandingEverything we had was outstanding and the rhubarb dessert was to die for.11/04/2013 00:00:00An olde-worlde RestaurantHad a fabulous 3 course lunch for £18 each, food was delicious, staff friendly and attentive and the ambience was perfect. The selection of food on the special 3 course lunch would suit a lot of people, 2 vegetarian options on too. We were delighted with the restaurant, we couldn't find a fault with anything.10/04/2013 00:00:00still very very goodlambs fry was excellent, sticky toffee pudding is the best ever, house red wine is beautiful. the staff are wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable09/04/2013 00:00:00This was the first time IThis was the first time I had visited Blackfriars, I booked it as we were visiting Newcastle and I had read a review. The whole ethos of this restaurant is fantastic, from the ambience the service and the food it delivered. The starter of carrot fennel and tarragon risotto was like a taste of spring, the smoked salmon and the blackpudding were also delicious. We had lamb and beef as sunday roast which were very good but not exceptional, but my mums is hard to beat so don't take it as a big let down, as they were not. The sticky toffee pudding was amazing as was the pistachio & nutmeg ice-cream, though the custard tart was nice it didn't blow me away. I don't live in Newcastle, but when I am next in town I will defiantly be paying a visit07/04/2013 00:00:00Made our trip to NewcastleFantastic food and drink with service to match from Imogen. The lamb dish I had was perfectly cooked and everyone received generous portions.06/04/2013 00:00:00dining in historic NewcastleIt was my first visit to Blackfriars but following some very favourable comments from a family member I thought I should try the restaurant. Reviews on different websites put Blackfriars in the top ten restaurants in Newcastle and to be honest I was not disappointed. The service was superb even though the restaurant was busy, the food was well cooked and good with an excellent selection on the menu and the value for money is very pleasing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I will be looking to go again myself soon.06/04/2013 00:00:00Friday lunchExcellent value. Only point to note that a service charge is added to bill which I am not a great favourite of.05/04/2013 00:00:00Back againFirst experienced Blackfriars for a family celebration in December. We were so impressed with the food and service that nine of us organised a day out to Newcastle to shop and revisit Blackfriars for lunch. We were not disappointed, everything ticked all the right boxes. The choice of food and service were brilliant. We will certainly be returning soon.05/04/2013 00:00:00Lunchtime TreatBlackfriars consistently provides good, well provenanced, interesting food with friendly service. The lunchtime set menu (£18 for 3 courses) offers good value for money if you're looking for a treat without breaking the bank. The location and building are superb for convenience and atmosphere. Our group of four included a veggie, a non-meat eater, one gluten intolerant and one with nut allergy and we were all very happy with our meals. Highly recommended!02/04/2013 00:00:00Good value for a Sunday LunchWe went there on Easter Sunday and had the set lunch menu. It was a good meal and the sunday roast was very good.
I saw that somebody recommended the sticky toffee pudding and it was, indeed, wonderful!
Very good place!31/03/2013 00:00:00As always, excellent!Always have an excellent experience at Blackfriars. I enjoy coming back to this restaurant time after time.30/03/2013 00:00:00Relaxed lunch with excellent servicWe enjoyed the lunchtime set menu. We were all very satisfied. The staff were attentive without intruding.
We will be back.30/03/2013 00:00:00Excllent meal first classExcllent meal first class presentation.
Staff were all very attentive and made the dining experience a pleasure.
My wife dietery requirements we fully met without any fuss.
Must return very soon30/03/2013 00:00:00Early evening diningThe early evening set menu has a great choice and is excellent value for money... However one draw back is that they only serve bottled beer, lager and cider at £4 a bottle - a little restrictive and a bit overpriced. They have an extensive wine list with a few avail by the glass. Everything considered a fabulous meal in great surroundings , we will be going back .28/03/2013 00:00:00fantastic valueThe set menu is fantastic value and the food is excellent quality. We both had home made gnocchi which was delicious, combine this with a delightful ambience and surroundings and helpful, friendly staff...why go anywhere else?27/03/2013 00:00:00Romantic eveningWhat started as a meal out with my girlfriend turned into a celebration of our recent engagement and the staff were great about it! The food (we opted for the early bird special) was excellent across all three courses, and I really must recommend the sticky toffee pudding. All in all, a unique dining experience in Newcastle, hearty food and friendly staff.27/03/2013 00:00:00What a present!A Christmas present including a trip to the theatre - what a day we had. The meal was superb - undoubtedly the best steak I've ever had, and the service was great - friendly, helpful.
We will be back!23/03/2013 00:00:00wonderful food, friendly staffwonderful food, friendly staff, excellent location. Local produce too which is great.19/03/2013 00:00:00Blackfriars - Friday early eveningFood was excellent – starter and a main from the set menu for £15 a head plus a glass of wine and a bottle of local ale.
Starter risotto was delicious, and the potted crab was tasty followed by 2 steak main course.
Lovely place and pleasant staff.
I had one very small gripe (which just happens to be a pet hate of mine) in that the service charge was included on the bill.
I appreciate it’s something that wont phase many people, however I just feel it should be up to the diner to decided whether the service is of value, rather than automatically including the charge as extra.
- a small issue that wont put me off returning or recommending15/03/2013 00:00:0010 out of 10What's not to like. Couldn't believe we were sitting in Newcastle city centre, it felt like a country restaurant but in an old abbey. Great ambience, delicious food, attentive service.13/03/2013 00:00:00still the besti requested bubble and squeek from another meal to accompany my Northumbrian liver, no problem for the staff. My meal was beautiful. The bottle of house red was exceptional followed by the top of the league sticky toffee pudding. A meal to brighten any day. Brilliant12/03/2013 00:00:00great staff/ great foodAs ever, the staff at Blackfriars were top drawer; the food was great too; had the gnocchi and they were fab; others in the party a little confused at getting braised lamb for Sunday lunch, rather than roast, but with a bit more clarity (and it was well explained by the helpful server after the fact) then the grumpy oldster with us would probably have been sated as well, because even they had to admit that the lamb was tasty.10/03/2013 00:00:00Mothers DayWe had a lovely family lunch for 8 for Mothers Day including 3 children. We were advised that they could do half portions of anything, and if there wasn't something that the children would like just to tell them and they would make something for that they did want.
Exceptional service from friendly and down to earth staff without any of the formality that is sometimes found in restaurants with great food.
Highly recommended for service and food - if you are thinking about going - then do10/03/2013 00:00:00Outstanding food and serviceMy wife and I went on Saturday night to celebrate her birthday! The staff were absolutely wonderful and took care of us from the onset. Food was delicious and fresh and the atmosphere fantastic! Maybe a little expensive but you get what you pay for and that is excellent food and too class service in a beautiful setting!09/03/2013 00:00:00Good, well cooked food whichGood, well cooked food which was not just the usual restaurant fayre - the shared fish starter was too light on fish and too heavy on bread ... smoked salmon was really very good. Rabbit main course, with melt in the mouth light and very short pastry, was a winner. The range of puddings was small but each was a delight although there were 3 of the party which plumped for the chocolate pave which didn't disappoint
The wine list was as extensive as it needed to be with some very helpful suggestions (although not all). I enjoyed the specialist beers but what a pity that there were some on the menu which were not available. Why no draught ale?
A very good experience - £40 per head for 3 courses plus coffee plus drinks was good value too.09/03/2013 00:00:00as always a great visitgreat choice in food, helpful staff , wonderful setting. looking forward to next visit09/03/2013 00:00:00
