A word from Blackfriars Restaurant
Blackfriars was voted the best restaurant in the North East England Tourism Awards held in 2013.

Originating back in 1239 when it was built as a medieval friary, the restaurant served as the refectory for the friars making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK, steeped in history.

The 72 seat restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50 seat Banquet Hall and 12 seat Workshop running a range of courses.

Blackfriars was recently awarded 'Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle' by readers of the Independent, ‘Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has also gained an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

They were five of us and we all chose something different. The staff were attentive but not obtrusive and everyone had a very enjoyable evening"

  • "This was our third visit to Blackfriars, the other two having been for New Year's Eve when there is a very reasonably priced set menu. On this occasion though we ordered al la carte and were very pleased with all the dishes. My salmon was beautifully cooked and presented, but the duck liver parfait starter was my favourite dish, and my husband's scallop starter probably just pipped the brownie dessert for his top spot. Friendly service, a cosy but busy atmosphere and a bit of history - what's not to like?! This has become our favourite Newcastle restaurant for special occasions"

  • "My partner and another couple take it in turns to book a table once a month for a child free night out. We have tried to book Blackfriars a few times but have we've left it too late. So when we eventually managed to do so, we were pleased but the actual meal exceeded out expectations. Fabulous food, wonderful and non-pretentious staff made an enjoyable evening more so. Well worth the effort."

  • "This was a treat for my daughter's birthday and from the moment we walked in we were treated with respect. The staff immediately seated us and were attentive throughout the evening. The food was outstanding and although didn't look as though there was much on the plate, it was. The food was presented as well as any top restaurant and would definitely go back for another special occasion. I can't wait to try the set menu in the summer when we could sit outside."

  • "Food good but service poor. Staff disinterested and unprofessional. Clearly diners are an irritation to them. The person showing us to our table didn't even let take off our coats/sit down before almost throwing menus at us and then walking off. 15mins later we still hadn't been approached to see if any drinks were required. It wasn't even as if the restaurant was full. My recommendation is go elsewhere!"

  • "Blackfriars is not a bad place; it has decent value on the early bird menu and you can't ask for nicer surroundings in the restaurant itself. The food is nice - not exceptional - but nice. I do wish they'd be a bit more adventurous with the menu to make them stand apart from other restaurants. The service also has room for improvement. I felt that the person who waited on our table had an aura of nonchalance and a desire to be somewhere else. But otherwise, Blackfriars is not a bad place to while away an hour or two."

It offers about a hectare of delightful old buldings and gardens as well, of course, as superbly cooked and served local produce. A real haven for the discerning traveller.   • "I took my Wife to Blackfriars to celebrate her 1st Mother's Day. The restaurant was nice, the staff were helpful, however, although the food was well presented, we didn't get value for our money and expected much more on our plates for what we paid. If we hadn't ordered sides to go with our mains we would've still been hungry. There was lots on the menu, however, nothing automatically got served with vegetables, potatoes etc... and these had to be ordered on top of the mains! I never complain but the Rabbit I had for my main, the leg being edible but the stuffed roles consisting of Skin & Fat, which were disgusting, resulted in me mentioning it to the waitress and she thankfully knocked it off the Bill. Overall,it was a dissappointment."

The service was friendly and although we were not getting restless we were informed that our meal was coning next. The cooking was good and the ingredients allowed to shine. We chose to drink beers from the extensive list and enjoyed matching them with our food. The room is cosy and comfortable with only a few tables, they have two sittings 6.30 and 8.30"

  • "We started off with the shared fish trencher which was lovely. However it wad merely the opening act as both my wife and myself chose the lamb with mashed potatoes and carrot/swede extras. Superbly cooked, the lamb was beautifully pink while the crispy lamb was mouth watering. Service wad impeccable and the staff were very smartly dressed. Will definitely be recommending and going again the next time we are in 'Toon'!"

  • "Attended on Saturday for lunch with my fiancee and our little one. The requested high chair was already at our table when we arrived. The decor is fab and just what you would expect for a restaurant with a medieval history. The staff were lively and very attentive without being intrusive. My home-made black pudding starter was very tasty and in keeping with my hunt fir the perfect fish and chips I opted for that option, it was worth it. Beautifully crispy batter, moist fish a nd a lovely chunky tartare sauce. Combined with thick cut chips - perfect. My fiancee opted for steak which was again wonderful. Even the little one's fishcake was tasty served with peas and carrots at our request. All in all a lovely lunch date for our family.."

  • "Met at the door by a very welcoming member of staff and asked to take a seat whilst our table was prepared, which wasn't a problem as we arrived five minutes early. The restaurant was busy for a Monday evening and this gave it a very pleasant atmosphere. The selection on the menu was ample and it was nice to see all the local produce. The prices were not too expensive for what turned out to be a very pleasnat meal, once it arrived. There was a good selection of real ales and wines. However, the evening was spoilt because we had to wait for 45-50 minutes for our main course (we had not ordered starters) Two neighbouring tables were served their main and desert courses before ours arrived."

I could nit pick a little and i will on this review, but only as a form of constructive criticism, the chicken livers on my starter were overcooked but were still very nice and the locally caught fish and chips had been left on the pass for a couple of minutes too long, as the peas and tarter sauce had a bit of a crust on top when they were served! I am only saying this to improve quality and not to complain as i know these guys want to be the best! we are going back again for the evening menu this time! A special treat for my husbands birthday, he had the fish pie which he said was delicious and I had the best fish and chips I have ever tasted. Had eaten here once before at lunch time and now I will be a regular diner. Can't recommend highly enough."

My friend had sausage and mash which was standard pub quality. The one redeeming factor was the sticky toffee pudding which was good. Overall, disappointing."

  • "Located close to many of Newcastle's Theatres and Cinemas (and also close to the rail station), this is an excellent place (set in a beautiful historic site) for a pre-theatre/pre-cinema dinner. The service is very courteous, there is a range of delicious meals and puddings, all seasonal and locally sourced, which also makes it a very healthy and eco-friendly choice. Food preparation and presentation are both stellar - as pleasing on the eye as on the tongue. Only downside is that the dishes themselves are a bit small for the price, and the wines are expensive - perhaps a bit too much for a student budget, but also might be acceptable for most other people."
