Bistro Union Ratings and Reviews
Great food and service
Enjoyed a delicious meal with good quality food and a warm and friendly atmosphere. The waiting staff were well knowledged and helpful to make recommendations for both food and drink. I had a fantastic steak which was perfectly cooked and my partner had the cod which was also very tasty. All the side bar food that you can order to accompany the main food is also great and good value.
Good food served with a smile
It suited us to eat early but this meant that the restaurant was empty. A pleasant consequence of this was that the staff were very attentive. The food is excellent and well-presented although not cheap. I asked for them to take the service charge off the bill so I could pay in cash - this did not cause a problem which is always reassuring. A very well-run, professional place for good food in the locality.
Good option for Sunday brunch, large range of options but something was lacking - coffee like rocket fuel which might be perfect for some!
Great Sunday evening at Bistro Union, catching up with a friend whilst munching delicious comfort food. The guinea fowl Kiev with creamed corn and smashed potatoes was deliciously original and full of nostalgia all at the same time. We managed to squeeze in the warming plum crumble, it was Sunday dinner after all!
Not good anymore
I used to love Bistro Union. This was such a disappointing visit. Food was much worse quality than expected, had to send my steak back and the second one wasn't much nicer. Overpriced for what it is now. Will be going to foxlow in balham next time!
Always a pleasure
Bistro Union is a truly special place. The menu is quirky but not over the top, think of it a british pub food with a twist. The food quality is amazing (I would particularly recommend the roast chicken which is a real experience!). Staff is really friendly and the setting is very cosy too. It really isn't a surprise to see that this is one of London's top 100 restaurant. It also makes a meaning full english / brunch - Definitely going back!
uninspiring local bistro, overrated food
I cannot remember a menu that left me not wanting to order any dish: it felt the chef was trying too hard combining ingredients that you dont really want together (starters and tapas all fall in that category). my meat dish was swimming in grease (oil / butter) and was heavy and inedible. same for my husband's. heavy and cooked in too much oil or butter is a complaint we've had frequently for dishes (particularly fish) at Trinity, another local restaurant a bit more upmarket operated by the same chef. definitely overrated food at both venues, and expensive at that. can't see what the fuss is about
Sunday lunch on a warm early autumn day
A friend of mine arrived fresh off the plane from Sydney early in the morning so I booked for midday lunch. I had not been before but had heard a little about Bistro Union and had in the past had a truly memorable special occasion dinner at Trinity....My expectations were perhaps very high. However it did not disappoint. We chose to share Mackerel rillettes before the main event. This was a pleasant intro to the meal washed down with some white wine from a carafe (an old fashioned milk bottle - a charming touch). For mains I chose the Grilled Octopus with a bean stew. The octopus was tender and had a crisp grilled crust - delicious. My companion had the darne of hake. We ordered the triple cooked chips as a side - my companion still purrs over the thought of the chips. They were fluffy in the centre and crisp and tasty on the outside. It made for an excellent Sunday lunch.
Food was great but expensive
Food and wine was extremely yummy, was disappointed that they charged a cover charge per person...
Expensive for what it was
Went for lunch with a friend. Would have liked a salad or something light but there wasn't much choice, this is primarily a fry up brunch or meat and 2 veg place. The restaurant was bistro style with large bar and was nice. We were rammed a couple of times by aggressive pram drivers but that's an occupational hazard in our area....I had the BBQ octopus with beans, it was decent but slightly burnt. My friend left most of her burrata (mozzarella) salad and one of the potato skins stuffed with cheese. The carafe of wine was served in a milk bottle, this was a first for me and somewhat naff. She had dessert, it looked ok, she didn't say anything about it. On the plus side we got free mineral water and some bread, however at £64 including service and coffees I thought this was pricey for quite unsophisticated food and suspect one could do better in the area.

Really good food in a relaxed and nice environment with good service. Definitely coming back here!!
Excellent local restaurant.
Great to have a good local restaurant within 3 minute walk. Friendly efficient staff who really seem to care. The food came promptly, was hot, well presented and good quality. Really excellent chips!! With 3 glasses of a very drinkable wine, it was a sensibly priced lunch for 3.
our favourite local restaurant
great food, frequently changing menu, friendly staff, outdoor and indoor seating, good atmosphere
Bistro Union delivers every time
There is always an unusual menu selection at Bistro Union from the drinks to the food, and all but one pudding (in the two years that I've been going) deliver to a very high standard. Even the kids meal is delicious, I have to stop myself pinching food of my daughters plate. Love how they constantly change up the menu so there are always old favourites but with tempting seasonal new comers too. The service is always friendly and approachable and they always remember and give special attention to my 10 year old. Eating outside on their little terrace is a massive bonus but inside is nearly as good as the atmosphere is perfect. Unlike other places it's always good to subscribe to their mailing list and they have brilliant super clubs and other fantastic events throughout the year, which fill up super fast. I highly recommend this little local gem, you won't be disappointed

A wonderful venue. Good food and amazing decoration - will visit again.
Very enjoyable evening
This restaurant was recommended by our son who lives in the area. The food was generally very good , excellent roast chicken, the squid was a little chewey but the tomato salad it was served with was really delicious. My coeliac condition was dealt with very courteously and gluten free bread was available Overall we had a very good meal and enjoyed the evening very much.. We thought it was very good value and we would certainly return again.
Excellent cooking in heart of Abbeville Village
Bistro Union is fairly new to Abbeville Road and I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious our meal was. Like many restaurants in London, however, the acoustics are hard and the noise level rose as the place filled up, making it hard to follow conversation over dinner.
terrific value - tasty food and friendly service
Service was great - menu well explained and efficient with humour!

Another lovely dinner here. Service was great, friendly staff, and food was delicious. The shared roast chicken is always fabulous! We even got to take the leftovers home! The squid dish was so good too. The pre-dinner tipples were perfect. Definitely recommend those. Will be back soon, once again!
delicious food, good simple menu. Child friendly area so quite alot of children around. A little bit noisy with children.

This is a local restaurant for us and our experiences have always been positive...we have had brunch, lunch and dinner and always have received great service and wonderful food.
So many gins to chose from!
Some excellent choices available here and very knowledgeable staff. Opt to share the small plates rather than individual starters and you won't be disappointed. The courgette and leek dishes were especially good and more interesting than their understated titles might suggest. Our squid main was lovely, though not hearty and too pricey for such an affordable ingredient. We loved the parsley salad, but I felt it could have been broken up with another ingredient to add interest and crunch. The onglet steaks looked good, though my husband's was chewy and lacked flavour. I think it's an unwelcoming spirit that charges extra for a side of chips with a steak. The choice of wines, gins and beers was extensive and unusual. The waiter was very helpful and made good suggestions. We had a lovely evening. Everything was well cooked and carefully judged.
Really enjoyed our meal, loved how varied the menu was. The service was fantastic and there was a lovely ambiance in the room
Friendly, knowledgable staff
We went to Bistro Ynion in a whim on Monday and were not disappointed. Not only was the food delicious, seasonal and good value but the staff really made our evening. They were friendly, chatty and knowledgeable without being over attentive. The service we received really made our dining experience a pleasure.
Modern and creative cooking in Clapham
Bistro Uniion is lively, friendly with interesting food and a reasonably priced wine lies
Great service and food
We had a lovely meal at Bistro Union last night and it was a perfect location for a girl friend catch up. The service by Amy was exceptional, very friendly and efficient but not intruding, the food was delicious and decent portions. The only suggestion I'd make is to offer more than one vegetarian main option, but that's pretty standard wherever I go and the macaroni cheese didn't disappoint. Would definitely return.
And lots of it Super friendly staff Great local restaurant
A Gem on Abbeville Road
Bistro Union makes Wednesday night dinner feel special. This has been our favourite Friday night spot for a while, but we recently took visiting friends there on a Wednesday night and got a chance to experience our local fave with a quieter atmosphere. The staff are so knowledgable about food and drink that one can feel free to try something new. The food is prepared so well that everything I've ever had there was memorable. Love it!!
Great! But Avoid Sunday Evenings
As always, fabulous food and service. On arrival at 7pm there was a table of screaming kids which didn't exactly enhance the ambiance. There is a 'Kids Eat Free' between 6-8pm which explains this, however I also saw 3 couples turn around an leave as soon as they opened the door because of this. I would just advise to stay away during 'Kids Eat Free' periods!
Delicious food, interesting menu and super-friendly staff.
too expensive for what it offers
This was our first visit. We liked the place and the service was excellent and very friendly. The food was good, but of the type a reasonably competent cook could easily produce at home. This is not a criticism, just a description. We thought the tongue fritters were very good, but a leg of rabbit and a fish pie were unexceptional. The same applied to the poached pear. For two mini starters, two mains, a shared dessert and a bottle of wine the bill came to £80 (all included). It was a pleasant outing, but good value for money it wasn't.
Bistro Union strikes the spot
Tucked away some what in this part of Clapham- Bistro Union was a real find. The food was of a very high standard and the service was just as good. I will definitely go again in the not too distant future. Have to say that I had the Salt Beef which was very tasty-not sure about putting Dill in the dumpling though (would have preferred Rosemary or Tarragon but that might just be me) The Ambiance was what you would expect from an up and coming area like Clapham so all round it was a superb afternoon.

Overall a very enjoyable experience and delicious food. Service was slow with the wine and could do with being serviced a chunk of bread to mop up the lovely sauce served with the moules. My steak was excellent quality but too rare in some parts.
Wonderful staff - shame about the food
The waitresses could not have been more attentive although they were never obtrusive. We went on a Sunday supper night when there is only a fixed price menu £26 and no choice and you can BYOB. Our first course was a collection of starters to share - crab cakes (OK), tempura vegetables - just brocolli and some crab/fish? paste on toast. The salt beef we had for our main course was stringy and unappetising, the carrots braised with the beef were nothing special and the herb dumplings were very heavy. The rhubarb trifle was served in a small deep glass dish so all the custard was on the top and the bottom just a layer of stodgy sponge. We should have complained about the food at the time but what would be the point - there was no other food choices on offer and also, we did not want to upset the lovely staff!
a little dispaointed...
I've been to bistro union many times, and this time I took my parents and my boyfriends parents. I just don't know what went wrong, its usually such a great experience. It was busy, but still. We waited for drinks, we had to ask for the bread, twice. We waited nearly and hour for our main course, we didn't have starters, so were STARVING when it finally arrived. The side dishes came as we were finishing our mains, my dads fish pie was a little more burnt than it should be, and the staff were nice but weren't doing anything to fix things. A shame as we come here quite a lot are are usually really happy.
Fun, delicious and local
As always the staff were fantastic and friendly, the food was delicious - our only request is "bring back the sausage rolls!" The mussels were amazing and whether you have them for starters or main course they are worth choosing.

Perfect brunch spot. We visited at peak brunch time on a nice Saturday morning and were not disappointed. The food was very good (as was the bloody mary) and very good value given the high quality. Highly recommended and I would now like to try visiting for dinner. Service was excellent - perfect balance of warm and friendly, but non-invasive.
Never has been disappointed
I have been few times to this place and never have been disappointed. Great local bistro, good food and good value. I have taken many friends and family there and always has been a success. Very good value for money
