Diner Reviews
  • "As Bistro Union is a local restaurant the idea of trying out the Sunday Supper Club has been something we've wanted to try for sometime. We were not disappointed. The "snacks" as a starter were brilliant giving us an opportunity to try crispy pigs' ears along with other goodies. The main course was good and the idea of poached guinea fowl interesting. The leg and thighs were perfect but the breast a little overcooked. However, the flavours were excellent and well balanced with the accompanying green sauce lifting the whole dish. The portions were huge! The treacle tart for dessert was delicious without having the "burning" sweetness. A good meal with excellent service. The additional bonus of no corkage made the meal excellent value."

  • "Cute little bistro with good food. Staff were generally friendly and accommodated us when we had two extra people."

  • "Overall, a pleasant experience. Great location, a very nice interior and lovely atmosphere let down by slightly overcooked mussels and a higher than expected bill for dinner for 2. The steak however, was excellent, as was the chicken liver pate."

  • "We booked a table at the already highly recommended Bistro Union for 3pm on a sunday. And from the start we were not disappointed, the restaurant has a great ambience, the service was prompt, attentive and happy to please and the food was fantastic. Fresh produce, carefully prepared with a simple yet perfectly crafted finish. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Well done for providing a really lovely dining experience! Fab menu, fab staff and lots of little touches that just make the experience that little bit different! Will certainly be returning and am recommending to all my friends."

  • "Though we were not expecting a set menu we really enjoyed our dinner at bistro union. We have been in the week as well and think the food and service is really good."

  • "We were expecting more from this place. The decor is quirky and it being a sister restaurant to Trinity we thought it would be really good. However the menu is a bit limited. For main we ordered Rib of beef for two. This took ages to arrive. The second problem was we didnt have steak knives. Another couple also had to ask for some. We only got 1 knife initially and had to ask for a 2nd. The beef was good and fairly priced. However - having had the rib of beef at the anchor and hope in SE1, it wasnt the "best" rib of beff I have ever had. The mushroom ketchup did not really add anything, but the smokey sundried tomatoes were a revelation. So overall - its good but could be better, particularly the service. Maybe some bernaise too!!"

  • "I'm sad to say that this restaurant just hasn't got it together yet. The best part was the cow's curd starter which was quite lovely. Cocktails to start were mediocre - negroni too sweet, the prosecco wasn't great quality. Mac n cheese lacked flavour although well presented. Mussels were well cooked, again lacked flavour. Chips tasted old. House red & Paper road Pinot noir disappointing. Sauternes was lifeless. Espresso martini ok but not sweet as requested. Staff struggled to keep up with service. We were advised of extra wines by the glass due to wine training that day, although staff couldn't remember which ones. We flagged down the waiter twice to ask for (not offered) condiments to have eyes rolled. No finger bowl for the mussels."

  • "We woke up early on Sunday, searched toptable and found Bistro Union. The staff are friendly and very attentive. The bistro is welcoming and comfortable (with a little bit of a modern twist). The brunch special for £15 (fry-up) including coffee and a cocktail is great value and delicious. We'll be returning to try dinner soon."

  • "Fantastic menu, quirky decor, attentive staff. I went with my foodie boyfriend but also planning on taking my more traditional parents. It ticks all boxes."

  • "Great food, great service Little pricy, but Clapham is just that... £85, 2people, shared a starter and desert (yes we had our own mains) with £25 for a bottle of wine Portions are very good sizes, atmosphere is great and friendly waiters. Yes id go again"

  • "So we went here for our Valentine's dinner. I first found this favourite for Valentine's last year and have been popping in now and again at various times of day ever since. Because it was a special occasion we just went for it with starter, a couple of cocktails, rib to share (so good) and pudding. All delicious as usual and the staff are great for a bit of banter but know when to leave you to it. They're super-helpful, fun, knowledgeable and clearly care a great deal about their products. They also seem to get on as a team brilliantly which helps no end with the atmosphere in this relatively small space. Love it. P.S. try to go when the malted milk biscuits are straight out of the oven."

  • "Usually a good bet but I think they packed too many people in on Valentines Night and as a result service suffered. We had to ask every time we wanted assistance - to order food, to order desert, to ask for the bill - felt pretty unloved stuck in the corner. The food itself was good but I think they need to remember what makes them popular in the first place - Bistro Union is not a pack 'em in and trun tables quicly type of place. Also not helped by a particulalrly loud table behind us with a guy who had the kind of voice that you can hear above everyone else all night - not the restaurant's fault but didn't add to the experience! Not up to the usual standard"

  • "We ate at Bistro Union on Valentines Day, having eaten there several times before. The food is always good - we started with the pate and devils on horseback, followed it with thebeef rib to share and rounded it off with a small pot of ice cream... All of which was very tasty and nicely presented. The staff are very friendly here and, for me, are the standout feature... If you like your waiting staff to be quiet and to keep themselves to themselves, then Bistro Union may not be for you. However, if you enjoy a laugh and to hear the views of your waiter on a variety of subjects, then it is well worth a look."

  • "If this was in the East it would be my go to restaurant. Without fail a great little place. Wonderful welcoming staff, great food, and yummy cocktails. It always feels like its sunday here, very relaxed. Highly recommend BU!"

  • "We had a nice bavette steak with chips, and mussels with mayo and chips respectively. Both dishes were well excuted, the steak was tasty and cooked to perfection. The chips were to die for. The mayo and the mushroom ketch up were alsoa nice surprise. Also nice you can have free sparkling water. Service is good. Ambience just OK."

  • "Two main dishes very well cooked and presented. Quail on a bed of deliciously flavoured barley and lemon sole cooked to perfection. Excellent apple crumble. Generous portions."

  • "Good Sunday evening option for locals possibly a little overpriced No choice and pre-booked Sunday early dinner (6pm -8pm) Meal as pre-described Robust but well cooked cuisine Substantial (doggie bags in evidence) with friendly and speedy service low-key family orientated ambience Main excellent "Starter" almost an irrelevance Dessert OK no corkage - so bring your own bottle a nice (cost-effective) option 1st visit so cannot comment on quality/ value of normal menu"

  • "a few months ago? Maybe not. Just a little disappointed in Bistro Union. Food is always of a high quality, but tonight it was a little less special than what you'd come to expect from the spin off of The Trinity. Macaroni was just like any plain macaroni. Fish was a bit tasteless. Nothing with flare that is usually small tasty Bistro Union plates. This could have been a night at a pub. And hopefully an off night for the restaurant. Come on Bistro Union, please don't let it slip...."

  • "We had a really lovely evening at Bistro Union. We went for the Top Table offer menu & had a great selection of dishes to choose from. I was beaten by the Toad in the Hole & loved the different selection of ice creams we could choose from. We've never had quince & honey or chestnut icecream before. The staff were friendly & very helpful. We'll definitely be back."

  • "From the delicately poached roast chicken, bread sauce and all the trimmings, to the cooked in a cast iron pan big boys/girls breakfast to the outrageously good mac n cheese with confit tomato, this restaurant is just outstanding. The food is always top notch, the booze is great and the atmosphere just wraps you up and tells you to stay and have another glass of wine or mulled cider. We love this place and keep coming back, so just don't tell too many people as want to keep it feeling 'local'!"

  • "Glad to come across this lovely place tucked away in Clapham. A buzzy ambience (clearly the locals love it), very friendly service, some really innovative delicious British fare served up in a very village-y style. Absolutely fabulous place, albeit a tad expensive."

  • "We've been a fan of Adam Byatt's wonderful "Trinity" since it opened so we expected things to be good at Bistro Union too, and they were. It's a nice casual space that actually feels warmer than the website pictures suggest, and the service was efficient and friendly. We just stopped by for brunch and both chose the fry-up, which was perfectly cooked and attractively presented in a small cast iron skillet. Also, the coffee was excellent: they know that a cappuccino is not just a latte with a bit of foam on top - something that seems to be unknown in far too many places. We'll be back to try the bar snacks and dinner options."

  • "Bistro Union has a charm which is rare these days - everyone there seems involved in giving you the best possible time. Lovely. We will certainly be back!"
    dined on 23/11/2013
  • "Very good food but a bit heavy. They didn't have many options on the menu that were light. Though what I had was good. Have only eaten during the winter months there and would like to test a summer menu. Service was very good and would definitely recommend to others. Though very enjoyable not convinced it lives up to the hype it gets locally. I do wonder whether it lives off its association with The Trinity restaurant in Clapham a little too much. Definitely worth a try for a relaxed evening out and a menu that is a little different!"

  • "I like Bistro Union, but for me its "good not great", food is the high point - always very good and always consistent, I particularly like the little starters and nibbles but have never been able to fault the flavour or the presentation of the food in general. Service can be a bit hit or miss, sometimes fees a bit amateurish and they aren't always the most attentive - you feel you are tying to attract their attention more than you should have to. Ambience is ok, nicely designed with a trendy Bistro feel but a little bit too bright and open / "canteenish" - for me doesn't quite have that dark / romantic ambience. Finally for me it's just too "child friendly"."

  • "We really enjoyed our meal here - would recommend and hopefully be back soon."

  • "The place was awfully noisy, with two big tables at the back. We couldn't hear each other so we got moved to a table at the front. The staff was friendly although it felt a bit disorganised . There was nobody to see us off once we'd finished our meal. The food was OK but nothing outstanding. The bread was disappointingly bland and plain (especially considering we havd to pay for it). The goat's curd salad was ok but it had too much dressing and far too many walnut pieces. The meatloaf was served pan fried, which didn't do much for it. I assumed meatloaf would have been served like a terrine and it came out rather greasy. With a fried egg on top of that, I found it was a bit much. A friendly casual place but nothing special."

  • "This restuarant is a great new addition to Abbeville Road - the food is delicious, the portions are huge and the atmosphere is great. I loved my fry up served in a frying pan(!). Friends I have with have enjoyed a whole chicken or piece of beef between two which is fantastic value and the pies are delicious. I'll definitely be coming back!"

  • "A great new gem on the Clapham scene, typical of the Trinity standards. Perfect place to be on a rainy Sunday lunchtime. Can't wait to return and investigate more of their menu."

  • "Aged parma ham with a lovingly shared history & specials of crab were fantastic. Service friendly, informative, perfect, ambience lovely and really like the quirky school book touches. We went for a birthday treat and the extra slice of cake they offered with a candle was a sweet touch from a genuinely engaged staff. The only negative was that the veggie options were really rather sad. So often it is the case that real foodies mean that the meat/fish is lovingly choosen, meaningfully researched and thoughtfully presented if they could have extended the same interest to the veggie options this could have been a perfect meal. Pasta or sides doesn't really inspire!"
