A word from Bentley's Oyster Bar & Grill
Now in its tenth decade, Bentley’s first opened its doors in 1916 in the same beautiful old Victorian building it occupies today and has now become an iconic London restaurant. From the outset this famous oyster bar and grill, with its arts and crafts movement-inspired interior and Italian-gothic façade, captured the vibrant mood of a metropolis about to embrace the roaring twenties.
Offered the chance to restore Bentley’s to its former glory when it came up for sale in 2005, Chef Richard Corrigan embraced the challenge. In November of that year, following a sensitive refurbishment that kept much of the original arts and craft flavour, Bentley’s once again opened its doors to great critical acclaim serving oysters, fish and seafood in much the same way it has since 1916.
Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill also has two beautiful private dining rooms. The Crustacea seats up to 14 and the Jameson Room, with it's own private bar and street entrance, seats up to 60.

Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had a lovely meal at Bentleys a few days ago. The location is excellent, the ambience lovely, good service and good food. The restaurant menu is expensive. I was surprised to be charged £48 for a plate of well cooked but not overly large Dover sole. Apart from that surprise a most enjoyable evening."

  • "Great food, all fresh, all fantastic quality. Lovely ambiance with friendly waiters and a great atmosphere. We all had a thoroughly nice time. I particularly liked the oysters and it's great that you get a choice of origin. Would definitely return. If only I could afford to eat here every night..."

  • "Bentley's has become a definite favourite. It's not cheap but the food is excellent so I don't mind. The service is just a shade too attentive for my taste but is friendly and efficient."

  • "The best place in London for fabulous seafood. Difficult to pick my favourite but the Lobster Thermidor was divine! Service was great as is location! Went with a group of friends for a birthday who hadn't been there before and they are of the same opinion, fabulous and we will be back!"

  • "Went for lunch with several colleagues. Food very good and service professional. Good wine selection too. Was irritated to be charged BOTH service charge AND cover charge. Arrogant of the restaurant to try this on when 12.5% service charge adds a hefty extra onto the bill anyway. On my next visit, I will opt not to pay the 'optional' service charge."
    dined on 20/12/2013
  • "Oysters came half an hour late after we had finished our champagne. Brought wrong order to table of half a lobster each instead of a whole lobster; then accused us of ordering incorrectly when we asked for our whole lobsters! We were offered no solution or apology. Food came and was lovely although a bitter taste was left in mouths. When bill came we had been charged more for 2 halves of lobsters rather than the original whole lobsters. Only £2 but it's the principle. It was their mistake so would have expected some condolence; not charge us more! When we asked for the optional service charge to be removed there was no query as to why this was by management."

  • "I chose Bentley's hoping that it would be a nice day (not bad, but we were the only ones outside), and for it's excellent food..did not disappoint. Similarly, the service did not disappoint either...fair and reasonably friendly as it always is. Overall though it served its purpose as a venue for a relaxed business lunch that offers excellent food!"

  • "Best Dressed Crab in London Staff very friendly and efficient .Excellent wine list with a knowleable Sommelier."

  • "We have been coming to you for several years now, twice a year, and everything is fantastic. The food, service ambience. everything. My husband especially loved the scallops this time. The salmon for me was delicious. We look forward to coming to you on our second visit to London this year, in November. I will book in plenty of time. Many thanks for a lovely evening"

  • ". . . fabulous dinner Saturday . . . from the moment we arrived we were looked after like royalty! Each member of staff attended to us as if they truly cared and of course the food was excellent . . . I was out to impressed my new woman and can only say: mission accomplished, thank you Bentleys!"

  • "A good meal in a nice room. The fish dishes in particular were excellent. Service was very good apart from the rather odd behaviour of the sommelier."
    dined on 20/03/2014
  • "Quality and presentation of food was exemplary and all 4 of our group enjoyed our various dishes immensely. Not cheap but I guess you have to pay for quality. However this didn't extend to the wines which were immensely overpriced - being a member of The Wine Society gave me a real insight into what margins were being extracted. Also I was led to believe that the downstairs section was a piano bar - however the piano was located (or should I say hidden) discretely in the entrance hall which lessened the ambience."

  • "Have been to Bentleys now well over 20 times - once I was lucky enough to visit 4 times in one week, and it's a restaurant that I feel truly at home in. Although they specialise in fish based dishes, their meat offerings are out of this world good - better that some specialist steak places I've been to and that's saying a lot ! It's a measure of how great I think this restaurant is that although I have my favourites on the menu that I will always go back to, a friend of mine who has been has tried every dish on the menu bar 2, and he rates every one very highly ... not sure how much more of an accolade a place can get !"
    dined on 08/02/2014
  • "Few negative notes : It took a while before our 1st drink order arrived. prices of the dishes are on the high side. Postive : rest of service was great, good sommelier, friendly help splitting the bill, great food and on our exit we saw Richard enjoying dinner in the terrace."

  • "Staff were friendly and the service was good. Overall food was average for me; for my partner it was a nightmare. It was a dinner for my partner but sometime after dinner he began having serious abdominal pain. Overall the experience was nothing spectacular for the price that we paid and because it was for a special occasion our night didn’t end as pleasant as we would have hoped."

  • "Went for daughter's birthday treat. Really excellent beautifully cooked food including oysters, fish stew, and grills. However we where underwhelmed by the service. Although staff were friendly there was a slightly amateurish feel which you shouldn't get at this price level. Examples include:a very long pause before we offered a drink; then someone forgetting which bottle we had ordered; and then often our glasses were empty - you either need to be attentive enough to keep glasses topped up, or else not worry if customers do so themselves. Maybe Bentley's is trying to economise on service and the wine-waiter was too stretched, but it's a pity as otherwise this review would be an excellent rating."

  • "I went there on a sunny day to indulge myself and also to quench my craving for oysters. The rock oysters I had were delicious and very fresh. I also tried crab cakes which sound simple but they were delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was on the expensive side but as a rare treat it was perfect."

  • "Pleasant atmosphere, good choice of dishes, staff attentive and friendly. Very good and very enjoyable -- until one looks at the bill"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "Food was delicious - it was a birthday treat for my mum, and she wasn't disappointed. Starter of white asparagus and langoustines was herby lemony loveliness and a main of scallops, salsify, blood oranges and brown shrimp was equally good. I'm a dessert girl though, so probably the highlight for me was the apple and mint sorbet that came with my cheesecake - perfectly refreshing after a sauce-laden meal. We like rose wine and the pick from Provence was good for £36. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing."
    dined on 08/03/2014
  • "When we got a bill, it was a different, than the price from menu! Somewhere was added 1 pounds. And it is out of good service and terrible for they reputation, I guess. We won't come back there( Also, they give you a bread with no asking and after charge you for 4 pounds!!! Service are also included 12,5%. For what?!"

  • "I was recommended to go to Bentleys for dinner and we were not disappointed the ambiance was great the food was superb the specials board did not disappoint and well worth trying. all the staff were accommodating and friendly. At the bar the cocktails were mixed expertly and is highly recommend that they be sampled For a great night out this restaurant is well worth a visit and make sure you book a down stairs table. We had a great night thanks."

  • "I was one of the first to arrive for lunch and the staff were gathered downstairs - all happy, smiling and welcoming. Nice table upstairs where it is light and airy. We came for the fish. A good choice on the menu plus a few specials. The starters and mains were excellent. we decided not to have a sweet. Service was well timed for a business lunch - we were not rushed but neither were we sitting around for ages. A very pleasant lunch."

  • "We visited with friends for my wife's birthday. A great location, with a lovely fine dining room. All started very well with great service and some fastastic oysters (some of the best we have had), but the quality of the rest of the meal was a little mixed: the roast boar was cold, some of the meat on the mixed grill overdone and seasoning issues on other items. It didn't quite ruin our night but it was disappointing considering the reputation of the restaurant. It was then topped off with a slight disagreement over a bottle of red wine, which was attempted to be served chilled...which we didn't appreciate and sent back. I would certainly return for the oysters and alborino wine and hope the rest can be written off to a one-off bad night!"

  • "Bentleys is very well positioned near Piccadilly Circus, a perfect location for theatres, hotels and shopping. The food is very good, with a limited menu of high quality items. This is one of those good restaurants where the fish and oysters on offer depend precisely on what is available - so for example in the recent storms the varieties of oysters reduced. On all the occasions I have visited the staff have been absolutely helpful and the food brilliantly prepared. I would have given 5 stars but the restaurant phoned me to tell me very firmly that the booking was limited to a 2 hour window. There were tables free throughout the evening so I fear this approach to customers is probably counter-productive (it certainly wasn't friendly)."

  • "second visit, totally different experience-cramped downstairs, arguements between staff, poor service with unacceptable delays. this was valentines with a difference. I will not be recommending the restuarant to friends or family again which is a shame as our first meal with family was very special, i am not sure what has happened but it was almost chalk and cheese."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I found the staff to be very charming and friendly, they made it a very nice experience even before the food arrived. the food is presented beautifully and tastes to match. Even the other diners were lovely and my girlfriend and I had brief banter with the couples beside us. it was St Valentine's Day and my lady was very impressed with my choice so that's a big 10/10 for me."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Overall, we were a little disappointed with Bentley's. We had to wait nearly half an hour after our reservation time to be seated, the service was not great, and £85 for three courses was maybe a bit overpriced. We had to ask 3 waiters before the Sommelier came over to take our wine order, and then by the time the first course appeared, we had been in the restaurant well over an hour. The ice that the oysters were served in had mostly melted, which made it clear that they had been left out for a while. The food itself was actually very nice. I had oysters, beef tartare, scallops, and a raspberry trio for dessert. The first three courses were delicious, and so it's a shame that it was let down by poor service."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Food was ok but service was poor. Not much attention was given to customers. Starter great so as the main course but dessert let the cuisine down as our chocolate fondant was well over cooked and when told the waiter, he just took the plate away and that was it, even we had only a spoon of it."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "het was heel lekker voor eten ! We hebben er echt van genoten en zeker voor herhaling vatbaar."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "Valentines night might be the busiest night of the year but we didn't expect to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time. The food was great, but overpriced. For Michelin starred prices, we would expect much better service although the staff were very friendly just not particularly efficient. Seafood is a speciality here and the only fault I could find was the strange apple based sauce which was one of the accompaniments to the sea bass main course. The shared lobster, scallop, langoustine and prawn lasagne was a really good starter and the desserts were very pleasant. Total bill included a bottle of one of the cheaper white wines and came to well over £200."
    dined on 14/02/2014
  • "I've eaten at Bentley's a number of times and the service and the menu have always been great. Unfortunately the occasion of Valentines Day got the better of them, Not that they were overbooked but earlier tables were hard to dislodge and a build up of annoyed diners resulted. Not even a sniff of a complimentary drink by way of an apology. Main menu upstairs was very limited at a set price of £85.00 per person. We opted to switch down stairs into what is the new private dining room. Really quiet and intimate with a full Bentley's menu"

  • "A fantastic experience from the start. Pre drinks at the lovely little bar area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Delicious oysters to start followed by an excellently cooked seabass. Highly recommended for special occasion as its not the cheapest in town but certainly one of the best seafood restaurants in London."

  • "Arrived for a birthday dinner. Drinks were ordered which took a long time to arrive and incorrect. The sommelier kept bugging us to chose wine & explained that we were still waiting on our first set of drinks, but he still tried to pour the wine. The waiters in general were quite pushy to get us to order, which took away from the dining experience, especially after you had spoken to one waiter another came within minutes to ask the same thing. They didn't know the specials and seemed put off if you asked a question. The tomato salad was horrible, the tomatoes were so over ripe they were on the turn, yet this was not deducted from the bill which was quite pricey considering the overall experience. Would I go again? No"

  • "The bar staff looked like the were at a funeral, MISERABLE with no rapport or a smile to us,if was if we were an inconvienience, they were terrible The wine waitress was determined we should finish our bottle before the starters, it looked amateurish and desperate. The food was incredibly expensive for what is,and the wine prices are ridiculous a very small glass of average Sauvingnon at £11 ,but hey ho we`re in London With a single dessert, the meal was £340 for 4 ,£85 a head Bentley`s needs a good manager, and a re-think on pricing ,for a backwack restaurant with no view ,and poorly trained staff. Do they care ?? probably not"

  • "Three of us went to Bentley's for a pre-theatre dinner. We wanted to choose from the full menu rather than the more limited pre-theatre menu, but had to eat and leave for the theatre in about one and a half hours. The staff could not have been more accommodating, the food was wonderful (especially if you have a taste for fish and shellfish) and the ambiance relaxing and friendly. We left in plenty of time without ever feeling rushed or anxious. This was our second visit, we enjoyed the first experience so much we couldn't imagine going anywhere better - and we will be back."

  • "We and two friends went along Saturday evening for our first meal here and we had a great evening. The dining experience was great as was the food and it was presented well. Service was very good, attentive but not in your face. It wasn't the cheapest when it came to alcohol (£5.50 for half a pint) but the quality was very good. Would I recommend this place to eat? Yes. Food, service and ambience were very good and we had a very nice evening."
