A word from Baltic
Based in a converted carriage works, the interior of Southwark’s Baltic restaurant is achingly hip. Warm neutral colours, pale wooden beams and natural light from the glass atrium give the place a natural, organic feel. Right by Southwark tube, Baltic is an ideal place to kick back and indulge in some inspired Eastern European delicacies pre- or post- a trip to The Globe Theatre or The Tate Modern, and it just wouldn’t be right to leave without sampling some of the many varieties of Polish and Russian vodka that, along with the hearty food, are Baltic’s calling card. Polish food devotees will know owner Jan Woroniecki’s name from the uber successful Wodka in Kensington, and Chef Kristov in Hammersmith; Baltic too offers a selection of traditional and not-so-traditional Eastern European dishes like pierogi, chilled Hungarian sour cherry soup or caviar blinis served with (you guessed it!) vodka. The other great draw is the jazz, on Sunday nights.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I have to say I was a little disappointed with the food. The Lamb Shashlik was great but some of the sides we ordered were quite bland. Whilst I enjoyed the meal it wasn't somewhere that I'd rush back to."
    dined on 11/04/2014
  • "I've not eaten much Polish cuisine in the past but this was exceptionally good!"
    dined on 28/02/2014
  • "A special occasion with a friend's 40th birthday and Baltic once again made it all look so effortless. The large dining room as welcoming as ever and a wonderful array of exciting and attractive options on the menu. Wonderful tastes and flavours and time and room to savour and enjoy."

  • "Don't be put off by grubby outside - it's on a busy London road. Once inside, great bar staff make drinks to individual taste. Very friendly and fun. Good decor, and buzzy atmosphere. Helpful and attentive staff, but not overly so. Tasty, plentiful food, varied menu. Great place to catch up with friends. Will be back."
    dined on 03/04/2014
  • "Very simple review - awesome! Make sure you try their vodkas - one with each course!"

  • "Really delicious unusual food. Great space and good location. Our waitress was really helpful with suggestions. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning."

  • "Chose Baltic based on favorable internet reviews and was delighted. Group of 6 for Mother's day lunch. Good menu choices (only one vegetarian dish though), delicious food, great service and good value. Give yourself a treat and go."
    dined on 30/03/2014
  • "Excellent on all fronts. A memorable dining experience. Very interesting combinations of tastes and flavours. Extensive drinks menu. Attentive and jolly staff."
    dined on 29/03/2014
  • "As always the food was excellent. Service was efficient which was important as we were eating pre-theatre. Fixed price menu is very good value. Only slight problem is that the lighting is very dim and that can make it difficult to see the menu etc."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "I loved this place, really nice atmosphere and the food was amazing. The only issue we had was that we couldn't hear each other very well, because it was quite noisy."
    dined on 27/03/2014
  • "A menu that features Eastern European dishes, prepared to the highest standards, and at a reasonable price constitutes a fantastic combination. Not to be missed."
    dined on 26/03/2014
  • "Baltic continues to provide a great night out - an unusual but accessible menu at reasonable prices. I have eaten there (and enjoyed a pre dinner aperitif at the bar ) on many occasions and have never been disappointed. The restaurant was nearly full on Tuesday evening which is always a good sign. Another good feature is that some of the dishes lend themselves to sharing."
    dined on 25/03/2014
  • "Great atmosphere, fantastic food, a good balance between Eastern European and contemporary European cuisine. The bar also looks nice, hope to visit that next time before dinner."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "Love the architecture in here. High beamed cielings create an airly uncluttered space. Vodka menu at the bar is extensive and nice athosphere. Food often unusual. Portions not enormous but delicious."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "My daughter and I opted to eat 4 starter dishes and share. It was an inspired choice and the black sausage potato pancake with apple was the standout dish. All of the dishes were generous and well seasoned. Presentation. Was good with an excellent selection of bread offered at the outset of the meal. It is a large venue so not intimate but it is beautifully lit and the decor is tasteful. Service is efficient and well judged."
    dined on 24/03/2014
  • "Baltic is the best restaurant I've found in London for a long time. The dishes are interesting and unusual, at least for the ignorant British diner, with thoughtful but not outré combinations of flavours; the ingredients are top quality (you wouldn't get pork like that in the supermarket); and everything tastes freshly home made (their chips were made out of a real potato, in their kitchen, not bought ready cut--and I think they put paprika on them; the puddings have never been in a freezer). Extensive drinks list, including unusual wines (Georgian saperavi!) and beers, and a vast array of speciality vodkas. They even do a decent espresso. The restaurant is light and pleasant, the service is friendly, and the set menu changes regularly."
    dined on 23/03/2014
  • "I had the goose which was thoroughly delightful. The tables are stacked quite closely together which can get a bit too cosy if you're looking for a private/intimate/romantic setting but otherwise the selection of food and vodka make this a delightful choice."
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "I have eaten at this restaurant several times and I can heartily recommend it for its excellent, original food; freshly cooked and well-presented as well as really delicious. Service is first rate without being overly attentive. I have taken friends here and they have all been impressed with the experience. This is THE place to eat if you are in the area, or if you are off to the Young or Old Vic!!"

  • "Baltic had a really good vibe, the cocktail jugs went down far too easily. We sat in the bar which felt a little less formal and just what we wanted for the start of our evening. We ordered a platter which was delicious and such good value of money. Will be going back!"
    dined on 21/03/2014
  • "I had a late lunch here with a friend with a baby. The staff was patient and tried to be accommodating. The food was excellent. I will definitely return. It was lovely sitting in the back dining room with the sunlight beaming in."
    dined on 09/03/2014
  • "The place looks great. The food is really brilliant - the bread! - the sausages! - and the staff are friendly throughout. Delicious, interesting, curious food. The menu has the Polish (I think) names for dishes but brief English descriptions, as on any menu in any restaurant: this makes for excellent fun at the table trying to pronounce the name of your dish, should you want to. One of the best meals I've had for a long time. If you get a little forgotten on arrival (which is through the bar - we were forgotten, briefly) stick with it. The decor is quite stunning and it'd be a crying shame to walk away from such a special place."

  • "This was my fourth visit to The Baltic and I will return! Six of us ate early on a Sturday night following a visit to the Tate Modern (a short walk away). We were amongst the first to arrive (17.30) and it seemed that the restaurant was still preparing to open. We had drinks at the bar and were seated around 17.55. This slight delay was the only hiccup that we expereinced. The restaurant quickly filled up and was buzzing by the time that we left - around 19.45. Food was well presented and decent value. There is a distinct Polish theme to the dishes which makes an interesting change to the many European restaurants. There was a reasonable wine lst at attractive prices Overall, a good night; we all enjoyed it; give it a try"

  • "The only reason we booked at the Baltic was that the restaurant we wanted to visit was fully booked, what a blessing that turned out to be! The staff were attentive but not overly so, also very polite answering our questions even when we just asked for directions afterwards. The food was interesting in a good way and exceeded the expectations I had for the more expensive restaurant we could not get into. The only shock was how few diners were there. On one hand I would like it to stay a hidden treasure on the other hand it needs to be better known and deserves to be. Highly recommended!"

  • "Great, eastern European food in an elegant setting. You'll be amazed at what can be done with pork. And you'll not go hungry, that's for sure."
    dined on 17/03/2014
  • "Overall a very positive experience and would recommend I a heart beat."

  • "We went for an early dinner at Baltic, somewhere I've been before. The restaurant is a lovely room a to eat we had the bellinis and black sausage to start and then saffron chicken and lamb for our main. The food was very tasty, the lamb maybe felt like the spices were a little raw but I enjoyed it nonetheless. We chose a Hungarian red wine which was very tasty. We had the pannacota with vodka cherries which again was very tasty. I think it was a tad expensive for 2 at £80+ but i'd like to come back on the theatre menu to see what that's like."
    dined on 03/03/2014
  • "Lovely restaurant with beautiful open interior, skilfully partitioned with low walls to create intimacy. Well made eastern european food and exceedingly pleasant staff."
    dined on 02/03/2014
  • "The great plus about the Baltic is that the food is different, well presented and tasty. Eastern European food has a poor reputation but the Baltic puts a sophisticated twist to it. We skipped the normal wine- my sons tried one of the many flavoured vodkas and my wife and I had cocktails-all great! I tried the Kasanka as starter- the sharpness of the black sausage was nicely offset by the stewed apple. My wife's goose leg with braised cabbage looked and tasted fantastic. It was fun and enjoyable. The only downside is that it is very noisy and the tables are too close together. Don't let that put you off- the food and drink is worth it!!!"
    dined on 01/03/2014
  • "Would definitely go there again. Only downside was the noise from the 4 people on the next table, no partitioning and table too close so couldn't hear ourselves speak."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "It was my fourth time in Baltic and I still can't find anything wrong with it. Food is delicious, staff extremely helpful and efficient, restaurant always buzzing and full. The selection of vodkas is impressive too :-)"

  • "I have eaten at the Baltic on at least half a dozen occasions both for business lunches and lunching with friends. The service is friendly and efficient without being obtrusive The food has an Eastern European influence and tends to be full of flavour offering a variety of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes. Puddings are particularly good with an emphasis on chocolate and fruit. The set lunch is very good value with three courses coming in at just under £20. The dining area is set in what seems to be a converted warehouse. The high ceilings and skylights bring an airy, light ambience."
    dined on 27/02/2014
  • "After raving about Baltic for several years, I finally managed to arrange a date to bring a friend along - and I am so pleased she enjoyed it as much as I do. We started off with a delicious cocktail.... followed by another .... before treating ourselves to a full three course meal with wine. The food, as always, was delicious, the service friendly & efficient and the whole experience lived up to expectations. I've been coming for 10 years now for all sorts of occasions, with all sorts of people and it has never disappointed. Thank you."

  • "Had a fabulous evening for my birthday. Cocktails are good too!"

  • "Saturday evening, before Old Vic play. 6 people, 5 nationalities (Polish, French, German, Australian and New Zealander). Age: mid 30's Lovely place with great food (loved the duck Pierogi, tasted like home made ones), cocktails (try expresso martini), Desser - try "Ptasie Mleczko" . Friendly and professional service and reasonable prices in a lovely interior. Would definitely be back!"
    dined on 22/02/2014
  • "The service is perfect and the vodka menu amazing! Food was also good."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "Attentive but not intrusive waiting staff in a very bright, friendly setting which combines intimacy with scale and bustle without panic. Stylish design matched by well-presented, hearty food and a decent drinks menu."
    dined on 20/02/2014
  • "I hadn't been to Baltic for ages and really enjoyed my visit. Really buzzy atmosphere and very sweet service. Food excellent blinis light and melt in the mouth. My venison with roast pear and sour cherries was perfectly cooked."
    dined on 19/02/2014
  • "Baltic couldn't be situated better, being across the street from Southwark Station. Great ambience in this Eastern European eatery. The staff are very helpful and looked after our every need. The pickles and bread are a nice touch to sustain your for the vodka shots! The meal (Theatre menu) was fantastic and we wished we would have saved room for dessert. It would be a great spot to relax and have a drink at the bar or sit down for a full meal. The amber is such a nice decorative touch. Truly a great homage to Eastern European cuisine and culture. We'll definitely return."

  • "We had a wonderful pre-theatre meal, which was very good value. The staff are very friendly and the surroundings very atmospheric. With interesting, delicous food, it was a very good experience. Very convenient for the Young/Old Vic Theatres. Highly Recommended."
