Axis at One AldwychGood pre-theatre menuFirst visit to Axis and would definitely revisit. Located in the basement of the hotel, it feels little like being in a spa - but booth tables give you a good view for people watching. Food on the pre-theatre menu was good - good portions and well cooked. Reasonably priced for pre-theatre, maybe a little on the expensive compared to other good finds in Covent Garden.18/05/2013 00:00:00The spacious dining room inThe spacious dining room in the basement of One Aldwych provides an excellent space. The food and wine were first class and served by confident staff. Definitely going back17/05/2013 00:00:00Celebratory LunchA celebratory lunch with son. The service is friendly and welcoming, the staff being chatty enough without 'overcompensating'.
we began with champagne which, when reviewing the bill, seemed a wee bit pricey but not enough to spoil the day. We were there on a Thursday lunchtime and there were only a couple of other tables booked, a busy restaurant would have improved the experience. Having said that the food was everything I'd hoped for, pigeon on mushroom risotto to start was full of flavour and a splendid introduction for the main course, I had 'the pork', my son the lamb, it looked beautiful and tasted better, portion size perfect for us both(he's 22). Tarte tatin and cheesecake both a treat in taste and presentation. I will be returning.16/05/2013 00:00:00Pleasant EveningHad a nice meal at Axis on Saturday night. Went for the 5 course tasting menu which was tasty and good value for money. Service was friendly and we were not rushed as can be the case on a Satruday night.11/05/2013 00:00:00A friend and I had a veryA friend and I had a very pleasant evening at Axis at One Aldwych. The 3-course set menu was very good, and there was plenty of room between tables. The level of service was also very good, pleasant staff and I would return again.11/05/2013 00:00:00Wow wow wowTook theWife as a treat to end our day date in the West End & what a way to end our date. The food was fantastic , service quality , surrounding impressive & the overall dinner amazing. We had the 5 course tasting menu with a Bellini. All courses were divine but the chocolate final course mmmmm!!!!!.03/05/2013 00:00:00We took an early supper atWe took an early supper at Axis, starting at 6.30pm and had a super meal. To my surprise, our best choices were from the pre-theatre menu and it was great - as well as being a great price and speed. We drank a half carafe of chablis which went very well. They have an interesting looking vegetarian menu too.01/05/2013 00:00:00Fabulous food - well spacedFabulous food - well spaced tables - good service - good atmosphere ; just cannot be beaten for pre theatre26/04/2013 00:00:00Went to Axis for a special evening.. it did not disappoint .. very luxurious dining indeed .. especially with the offer that I booked it with through TopTable. Only downside was that I could not understand the waiter's very strong and very fast accent which is a bit of a shame as I am sure the delights he was telling my companion and I about would have been spectacular. Instead we relied on pure guesswork and looking at the menu. Wonderful.26/03/2013 00:00:00Early evening dinnerWe chose Axis to eat after a matinee performance at the theatre and were not disappointed. The food and service was excellent in a relaxed atmosphere which was not overcrowded so we were able to talk easily. We will return there.23/03/2013 00:00:00Attentive serviceFriendly and good service, super meal, great value fixed price menu as part of London Food Fortnight promo. Would go back anytime23/03/2013 00:00:00london resturant weekExcellent value, great food and really good service22/03/2013 00:00:00Early evening meal£25 menu was excellent value. Service was v good. Was worried the restaurant might be empty as had table for 5.30 but there were a lot of diners.22/03/2013 00:00:00A classy eveningWe took advantage of the London Restaurant fortnight set menu at Axis and were pretty impressed. The pork main course being particularly good and excellent value as part of the offer. The restaurant itself is at basement level, reached via a rather grand spiral stairway. The service was effective, if not the warmest. However we would happily go to Axis again.22/03/2013 00:00:00Axis, One AldwychOriginally booked at the Axis under special deal for London Restaurant Fortnight. Great deal, 3 courses for £25.
On arrival not wanting to eat three courses, my companion and I decided to eat from the main menu.
Lots of choices, 3 fish, 4 meat and I believe a couple of veggie. I had the scallops and pork, and my fellow diner the ham hock terrine and followed by duck. All extremely tasty and accompanied by a nice bottle of relatively resonably priced wine. Will visit again22/03/2013 00:00:00Lovely food and venueAs a group of three women who all work in catering management we are critics but the venue is beautiful and the staff both polite and friendly. The creamed potatoes were a tad too runny but everything else was wonderful - the way it looked, the size of the portions and the taste. I would have preferred a pre drink bar in the same place as the restaurant rather than in the hotel next door but we were well catered for at the table. The steps took a bit of climbing on the way out for those who indulged - but apart from that the venue was lovely. It is definitely perfect for business meetings and we enjoyed the ambiance for a girlie chat - just not convinced it was a couples venue....20/03/2013 00:00:00Excellent pre theatre dinnerHad a fabulous meal here on Saturday evening prior to theatre visit.
We had the three course set menu and the food was delicious.
Wonderful waiter, ambience and setting. Would definately go back.09/03/2013 00:00:00AxisAxis is one of our favourite destinations for pre/post theatre dining. They are very switched on and will ask you what time you need to be finished and ensure the flow of the meal achieves this objective - they have never failed us yet! We love the decor which gives the restaurant impact. The food and service are consistentlyat a high level. Always enjoyable and a very safe bet.08/03/2013 00:00:00Courteous welcome. HelpfulCourteous welcome. Helpful staff. Perfectly cooked meal, with first class ingredients, presentation and taste. Good service. Reasonably priced. Will recommend to others and will come again.28/02/2013 00:00:00The overall dining experienceThe overall dining experience was very good. The reception desk was welcoming and friemdly and took our coats without prompting. The restaurant ambience is very good with a number of intimate two person tables. The waiter was friendly and efficient and the timing of service was very good. We had three courses from the a la carte menu, coffee and drinks after over a leisurely 2 hour period. They even subscribe to the Times Plus Eat out scheme which gave us 25% off the bill reducing it from £154 to £121 for 3 courses, two carafes of wine, coffee and calvados and port. I will definitely return to try the rest of the menu the next time I am in London.20/02/2013 00:00:00Perfect for pre-theatreVery good service and even with limited choice on the set menu the food was very good. Would definitely go back to eat in the future.20/02/2013 00:00:00AxisWe booked the pre theatre menu for four and were very happy with the entire expereience. The service and food were as good as ever. Although it was only 5.30pm there were enough other tables occupied to give the restaurant sufficient atmosphere and the striking decor and art help to add ambiance anyway. We would highly recommend Axis for pre or post theatre dining.07/02/2013 00:00:00Always a treat: perfect pre-theatreWe went to Axis pre theatre - always excellent, as the service is swift enough to be on time for the theatre, but feels unhurried and cosseting. Wonderful ambiance - feels private and luxurious.
Menu - good choice - food is always lovely, even little things like the bread and mushroom paste..such a good touch..the seafood ravioli a triumph..and we were given a selection of sweets including an unbelievable rhubarb candy floss, and pistachio ice-cream sweets..FAB!!!
This remains a favourite supper haunt.24/01/2013 16:00:00Fantastic foodTook a couple of clients here expecting it to be good, but we were really blown away by the food. Excellent. Service and Ambience also top quality.19/12/2012 00:00:00Best 3 course meal ever eaten!I don't use this phrase lightly. Axis produced the best 3 course meal I've ever consumed. Extremely tasty and very well presented. Service was impeccable, helpful in selecting dishes Atmosphere was probably best described as subdued, it's perfect for a romantic date, very intimate. Given the quality of the menu and food provided, the price was very reasonable. I will definitely return there at some point this year, even if it's not until my birthday. I really enjoy restaurants that can produce meals that improve on my own cooking.15/12/2012 00:00:00Christmas diningMy partner and I recently ate at Axis. The service was exemplary - all staff were very polite, courteous and precise. We both ate the lamb as a main course, which was rich and succulent. The chocolate dessert was a mite heavy, but the cherry bakewell was warm, light and refreshing.
We only had wine by the glass, but this was well-matched to the meal, which was nice as it was recommended by the waiter. We also had a glass of champagne each, which was slightly more expensive that I would have expected.
Overall, a lovely, high-class experience14/12/2012 16:00:00Dinner with friendsA great venue in a great location. Friendly and attentive service with pretty good food as well. Desert in particular !15/11/2012 16:00:00Axis at One Aldwych provedAxis at One Aldwych proved an excellent choice for a pre-theatre meal. The maitre' d was mindful of our need to be swift and we achieved our aim of getting to the theatre on time. Both main courses were full of flavour, beautifully cooked and well presented, as were both desserts. We will return and take our time over everything.16/05/2012 00:00:00We had a pre-theatre dinnerWe had a pre-theatre dinner at Axis at One Aldwych. It was our first visit and we loved the marble surroundings and the subterranean location (? the vaults of the former bank). We ate a la carte but the pre-theatre set menu looked good too. The food was very good although the portions were not over-generous, and only one vegetarian option was available. Interesting dessert cocktails (not sampled). Service was impeccable.04/05/2012 00:00:00Fantastic meal for a specialFantastic meal for a special occasion, though did have to ask for ice as warm tap water was brought to table when requested.01/05/2012 00:00:00We were a party of four. We were a party of four. The ambiance is interesting and relaxing, although not exactly 'cosy' if that is what you are looking for. We certainly liked it and will return. We had the fixed price pre/post theatre menu which was fine and reasonably priced. As happens too often, the wine prices are marked up with the cheapest at £20.
In summary: an enjoyable dining experience. Recommended.07/02/2012 16:00:00
