Diner Reviews
  • "The service was phenomenal however certain items on the menu were not as described. My girlfriend ordered the "spicy lamb with sour cream and guacamole" however what turned up were braised lamb chops (no spice) and taziki (apologies for any spelling errors). All round lovely however menu needs to be more accurate. ps my burger was excellent"

  • "Had a lovely evening at Avenue Restaurant. My mum and dad really enjoyed their meal and thought the ambience was perfect. We ordered from the set menu and found it to be great value for money."

  • "The restaurant had a complete new look after its refurbishment. Looks great! Service in the restaurant is really outstanding. Fast and of high quality."

  • "Very nice place, really friendly staff. I've been with work and friends and enjoyed both. The set menu is fantastic value and makes you want to spend more on extras that makes the overall experience feel special."

  • "A very enjoyable meal and wine! However the chicken soup was rather watery and tasteless. The seabream was delicious and also the peanut cheescake and black cherry sauce was wonderful"

  • "the restaurant is a good adress- the only problem on dining 3 april was that there was a kind of disco - to much noice -"

  • "Went at 7pm on a Thursday evening. Food was good and service welcoming. The dance music and the subdued lighting made it feel like eating in a disco, but the overall experience was enjoyable. We got the special promotion with a glass of prosecco thrown in and the food was good so would go there again for the ambiance and value for money."

  • "this is a super nice, classic and stylish restaurant with a very chilled relaxed vibe. good food and good service!"

  • "The Avenue's forte is that the service right from the door staff to the actual waiting staff is excellent. The atmosphere is very good and I think the staff play an important part in this. The Avenue is fashionable, is great for a lively meal or something more romantic (the ambience and decor is great) and everyone seemed to have fun in there including myself. The food is very good but slightly overpriced for what it is - however everything else makes up for this. I ordered the soft shell crab and then the lobster mac and I was really satisfied. I would 100% return and recommend to friends."

  • "and as for the clam chowder......the monkfish main was also delicious. The mini donut dessert was perfect. Its a long time since I have thoroughly enjoyed every course as much as I did. My only very slight negative was our first cocktail was slow to arrive and it was a Friday night, so felt like I needed one!! But they were very apologetic, I think they'd made a problem on the first ones they made. I will definitely return and very soon....."

  • "Having eaten at Avenue several times previously we were looking forward to trying the new menu, unfortunately we couldn t have been more disappointed! Little choice, over priced and tasteless would best sum up the experience. Unless the menu choice changes significantly to make the prices worth paying we will not be returning to Avenue in the near future!"

  • "It's rare these days in busy London restaurants to get attentive and memorably good service. Avenue provided it and exceeded its own high standards on this occasion. Good food, knowledgable waiting staff and they genuinely seem to care that you had an enjoyable experience. Highly recommended."

  • "I really enjoyed this restaurant. The staff are very attentive but not overbearing. It has a great bar area to enjoy a drink in before or after the meal. We went on a Tuesday night so the atmosphere was fairly quiet but this was fine as we were a large group. The food is comfort food done well. I particularly enjoyed the Lobster Mac!"

  • "The Avenue has been re-furbished recently and it looks great. the Food was very tasty & a good selection. My main issue was the size of the starter portion which was tiny. Given how much it cost, it was probably £8 a mouthful! Service was great & our waitress was very sweet."

  • "The new décor at The Avenue, which has always been one of my favourite restaurants, was great and I really liked it. The service in the bar area and generally the attention of the staff was also very good. Unfortunately, our main meal took almost an hour to arrive after the first course and no-one explained why it had taken so long. The food, when it arrived was either cold or not properly cooked and two of the four of us had to send our meals back. My replacement meal was not very good. The staff were quick in trying to rectify the situation and we were not charged for the food in the end, However the whole point of eating out was to have good food, served hot and not to get bad and poor tasting free meals."

  • "Used to go before the make over. Although the new look is fresh and modern the food was average. The starter (crab) was the worse starter I think I have had, the best part was the garnish and dressing, as the crab had no texture and too salty. The main was nice (chicken) and the desserts were nice. The reason I had gone there was it was my Mum's birthday, so while the staff were very nice and helpful it was a bit of a disappointing meal for such an occasion."
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "I was a regular visitor to the restaurant pre its new presentation. I find the new atmosphere much improved and also the menu is greatly improved even with most of the old favourites disappearing. I have been twice now since its opening after the revamp and on both occasions the consistency of the food was excellent. The staff are excellent, attentive without being intrusive. Its a difficult balance to strike and the restaurant has achieved it."
    dined on 15/03/2014
  • "The Avenue needs to decide what it is an stick to it. If its a bar, fine, but then do away with the food as its decidedly average. My visit on a saturday night was punctuated by multiple calls from the restaurant asking me to confirm my booked, off, as its wasnt full. I had better things to do with my time than wait on the line for ages as they didnt seem to have an ansaphone. I used the option of emailing, but they didnt reply. In this segment of Londons very competitive market, The Avenue simply isnt cutting it."

  • "Great atmosphere and service and attention second to none. Would definitely go again."

  • "Great location, but low quality food. We (3 persons) waited 60 mins for our lunch. Meat was stringy, fries came an extra 30min late and were salty. One portion was even forgotten completely. No one even dared to ask, if we like our meal or want additional water etc. Shame. The ambience is great though."
    dined on 05/03/2014
  • "I chose Avenue because it has a good atmosphere. However, the steak I had was the worst I've ever had. Medium rare came in burnt on the outside and medium inside. It was inedible. The manager was very good about it but it rather took the edge off our evening"
    dined on 10/03/2014
  • "Having been a regular at the 'old' Avenue I was a little sceptical in going to the newly refurbished Avenue as a sneaky look at the menu with its American theme didn't inspire me but I have fond and happy memories of my numerous visits there in its old existence so needed to at least sample the new menu before I perhaps dismissed it. Don't be put off at first sight of the menu. Burgers and meatloaf aren't what they seem. I had a burger and my dining companion the meatloaf. Both I can report were delicious. The food was wonderful and the staff very attentive and accommodating. The Maitre'd told me the menu will evolve as feedback comes in so give it a try I don't think you will be disappointed. I am definitely planning to go again."
    dined on 11/03/2014
  • "The atmosphere at the Avenue is great, the new decor is very classy and there was a real buzz on the night we were there. The food didn't quite match the decor and was disappointing. The menu and presentation of food needs a re-think. The staff were v helpful. It is worth a visit for the decor and atmosphere."
    dined on 05/03/2014
  • "The restaurant looks very nice and the staff on the door were friendly and helpful. The chicken schnitzel and burger were tasty and well presented."
    dined on 03/03/2014
  • "Very friendly staff and good looking restaurant but they need to get their act together for this high end dining. Cocktails took forever even though not being busy. Ratio of three waiter to one bar man means much hanging about by the waiters whilst cocktails are being made. We would have had two if they had not been so slow. Poor economics. At the table they managed to get every dish wrong for both the starter and main. Had no idea who had ordered what. The steaks would not please an American audience, the rib eye being very thin so difficult to have it rare. And at for over £30 once service added, a bit steep when no sides are included. They need to improve if they are to charge the prices they do and want return diners."

  • "Waited 40mins for drinks.Lamb and pork dishes were mainly fat! Starters were excellent, main coursses poor. Staff very good. Attentive, and listened. Decor was lovely, smart. Wouldn't return. Not good value due to the poor quality food."

  • "Oh dear. I used to love the old Avenue but can't say we were impressed by our recent dinner. To be fair we ate quite late so went straight for the main course, but the Yufka Cod, which we were told came in filo pastry (sounded interesting), actually was, er, fried cod in breadcrumbs. Cod was rather wet and unappealing - chips were great. The decor has gone from linen tablecloths and fab flower displays on the bar to shiny dark surfaces and square tables - all a bit 1980s. Music is really loud and diners at the next table upped their volume to compensate, which made for an uncomfortable dining experience. We didn't stay for dessert. Wine is also quite pricey. I'm afraid we won't be returning to what was once a favourite haunt. Shame."

  • "Soup arrived cold The burger didn't hold it's form, tasteless and slightly burned. Fries too salty Limited food selection"

  • "We had dinner for two. The restaurant was full the night we went. The ambiance and decor are lovely but slightly at odds with the rather basic American diner style menu. The service was charming but chaotic (they generously gave us a discount without us having to ask because of this). Although the food was good, it was quite expensive for simple fare (£90 for two courses - including main courses of a small burger for me and macaroni cheese with a small piece of lobster on top for my wife - and a glass of wine each, no aperitifs, no coffee). We left feeling confused as to what this restaurant is all about. Is it a steakhouse or a burger joint? In our opinion, both of those genres are catered for rather better elsewhere in London."

  • "The food was first class but the lunch was made by the excellent, friendly and helpful staff. Well done Avenue, we'll be back!"
    dined on 25/02/2014
  • "We throughly enjoyed the new flash, but suble interior at recently remodled Avenue on St James Street. The set lunch was good value and delicious, but not sure about the vegie option, which was 'corn' a bit more detail would have been helpful. Will go again."
    dined on 24/02/2014
  • "3 of my friends and I went to avenue the day after the re-opening. The restaurant itself is spectacular however we felt that that the food was average at best. Martin blizzard is the head chef and so we were expecting rustic Irish favourites. The steak was impeccable however the scallops ceviche left a lot to desire and the burger and chicken schnitzel were quite bland. The main problem with the menu however was the lack of options. Service was good and with a smile however"

  • "I ate at the Avenue on opening night and the service had not quite gelled. A load of waiting staff but not pulling together and the different "seniority" made it disjointed. That said we had a fun night as it's a buzzy place with a good atmosphere and based on a Manahattan style restauant. The food is American and the menu short. For me it just didn't work. The food not special enough and the prices a little over the top. Plus opening night glitches of cold side orders and warm champagne! There are places that do it better. I would go back for a drink as the bar was great, and if there is a Top Table offer, otherwise no."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "We were very keen to see the 'new' Avenue as we often went to the 'old' Avenue. Front of house was welcoming. Waiters were very, very good indeed. Food was good (especially the cheesecake - amazing!) as was the wine. We will return."
    dined on 21/02/2014
  • "It was the night of re-open for restaurant and I had friends in town visiting. This is how our night went.... 30 minutes to drinks from bar. Does not include the 10 minutes to get drink menus & take order. Front staff very nice but in the end huge failure in not getting us to our reserved table in timely fashion. 45 minutes after our rez time we sat down. Out of menu items including the bottle of wine we ordered. Their solution was to bring a bottle similar in taste, not in price but make no concession. Never seen that before so was quite turned off that they didn't think to just offer the alternative bottle at the price of original choice. Food was cold & order was wrong but at that point we were so hungry we didn't care."
