  • "Our friends had suggested Angels with Bagpipes to us, saying the restaurant was very good. This turned out to be an understatement. AwB is outstanding, excellent food, great service and world class ambience. The beef was some of the best we have ever had. The great service is worth a mention. There was ample staff, providing a cheerful and relaxed service, always being there at the right moment."

  • "Had a very nice experience with my wife - the food lamb and duck followed by cheese was absolutely super and cooked to perfection. The wine - a Malbec - lovely. The service was very nice and friendly - we laughed a little over one waiter - he was very busy with topping up water at the tables, so he topped our glasses with tap water - despite we had bought a bottle of water... he never noticed, and we didn't say anything :-)"

  • "Six of us stayed overnight in the Radisson Blu Hotel and decided to eat out nearby. 3 minutes walk got us to Angels with Bagpipes and we are all really glad we chose here. The friendly staff, excellent service and fabulous food made it a great evening out. The view from our table was of Mary King Close, another attraction we went to the following morning and across the road was St Giles Cathedral. We passed several street performers between the hotel and Angels and stopped to watch some acts on the way back. So - location, food, overall experience I would say is as good as it gets in Edinburgh."

  • "We chose this restaurant to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday and it did not disappoint. Food was excellent as was service.. We were a party of seven eating from the set lunch menu. This is excellent value. Superb food at low prices. Three courses for £19. Will definitely be back."

  • "We arrived 45 minutes late, not a good start! However, the waitress was very accommodating and we soon had our own table set up in a room off the main dining space. The service was exceptional throughout with very polite and efficient staff. The food was DELICIOUS! and the wine was just as good. I'd certainly recommend to friends and family unsure of where to eat. Price wise I certainty felt as a Londoner the same evening would have cost me at least 40% more. "

  • "We both enjoyed our pigeon starter - beautifully presented. My friend raved about her beef dish and I did the same in respect of pork loin. We were only going to have 2 courses but couldn't resist having a dessert and coffee too. Wonderful value!"

  • "I took my girlfriend to angels with bagpipes on the recommendation of a friend. She is quiet a fussy eater however a small yet varied menu which was availible on their website left us both spoilt for choice. Waiting staff were friendly but did not impose on your meal. A thoroughly enjoyable experience with great food and an even more impressive selection of wines."

  • "This was our 3rd time going to Angels with Bagpipes and once again they didn't disappoint. Food was delicious. I could have quite happily ate a whole plate of creamed potatoes and their green beans alone. But I did have the goats cheese and beetroot to start then the pork belly. My fiancee had a smoked salmon starter and then the steak. His steak came with thin cut fries and I ordered the creamed potatoes and green beans to accompany my pork. What a good choice I made. For pudding I had the chocolate and salted caramel and fiancee had the banana. Both were amazing and I ate every last mouthful on all my plates. We had a bottle of wine and a liquer after and the bill came to £108 which I think is reasonable for the type of food."

  • "Went here on Saturday for the lunch menu £19 for 3 courses. Started with a glass of prosecco and the potted salmon which was tasty but the accompanying crisp breads were on the small side. For main the12 hr beef was lovely and soft but lacked flavour a little. Would have liked a red wine sauce or something a bit richer than the tiny splat of diane sauce. Dessert was chocolate ganche no complaints there!! Overall the food was fine but atmosphere was a bit lacking, no music playing so i wont be rushing back to sample the a la carte menu."

  • "Went to Angels with Bagpipes after reading a good review. It delivered the food was amazing. I was staying in the new town and it was so worth the walk over to the restaurant in the old town. The prices are a little expensive, but you get what you pay for."
    dined on 28/03/2014
  • "The food was good. My one complaint was the scallop appetizer with the pork cheek. The Scallops with parsnip purée were delish, although for GBP 12, I expected more than one scallop cut in half. The pork cheek was an unpleasantly jarring element of the dish with it's rich brown sauce. It in no way integrated into the dish...take it off, please and throw another scallop on the plate. This would then be a truly memorable (for the right reason) dish. Service was attentive and friendly without being overbearing."

  • "We were at the back on the upper level. Nicely done décor there. Neither of us have great hearing and it was good acoustics there! Lovely service with enough staff so you were not waiting a long time. Food was Scottish and a great credit to Scottish food. It had lovely special taste that was worth paying for. I had the ? house red as part of a meal deal and it was the best house red I have ever had. Plates nicely warm to keep the food warm through the eating. Hope to go back there. There is a lovely veranda outside and it would look great with a bird feeder there."

  • "The haggis starter was excellent - full of flavour and surprisingly 'light'. For next course, my wife chose duck while I had lamb. We were asked how we would like these cooked and we both opted for medium. Although the quality of the locally sourced meat was top notch, they both came fairly pink. This didn't spoil my enjoyment of the lamb, but my wife found the duck unappealing, being rather fatty. For pudding, we both had the chocolate mousse with peanut ice cream and this fully met our rather high expectations. Overall, very friendly service, good quality food but a tendency to under-cook and even if you express a preference, being a perfectionist they will assume they know best! Hence the 4 rather than 5 stars."

  • "We were greeted, seated and given a complimentary glass of Prosecco. Alongside our mains, we shared a starter and a dessert, each had a glass of wine and coffee and paid less than £70 in all, making this an excellent value for money, but high quality, dining experience. Service was attentive, friendly, unfussy - and came with a smile."

  • "Food and service was amazing! Highly recommend scallops and pig cheek, never had pig cheek before but will definitely be having it again. Meat is cooked quite rare so when my mum; who ordered duck, asked for it to be cooked a bit longer there was no problems at all and she was not left waiting ages either. Waitress was very helpful and lovely."

  • "we had a meal early evening after a matinee performance at the theatre our choice of food included both vegetarian & non-vegetarian dishes we accompanied the meal with a bottle of red wine & several side dishes all food dishes & wine were excellent, waitress service was friendly we would have preferred a slightly longer delay between courses we did not order desert as starter & main were enough for ourselves the restaurant layout is a little strange with several different dining areas on different levels to access our area we had to walk past the kitchen serving area, then down a flight of stairs"

  • "Good choice of "special lunch" menu, served beautifully. The Restaurant has 3 or 4 separate smaller dining rooms, which make for a lovely ambience. Service was good and friendly."
    dined on 22/03/2014
  • "We had the lunch menu - three courses. It was just ok. The portions were very small indeed. I just did not find the food good enough value for money when the ambience was nothing special. There is such a choice of restaurants at the moment but comparing it to the food at the Ubiquitous Chip for instance in Glasgow which has a sense of occasion it did not compare that well. The best thing- rhubarb custard dessert. I had the slow cooked beef for main course and it repeated on me all day rather unpleasantly. The chicken salad rather tasteless. Its name, situation on the Mile and the décor at the entrance are the best things about it."

  • "This was a truly wonderful service. My Manager recommended the restaurant and we were not disappointed, we got the exact table we requested. Would definitely go back."

  • "Great location and even better food. Service is excellent. We had the taster menu for 3 people which was delightful. Wine paring seemed a little expensive though as a 25gbp per person in addition to the already moderate taster menu fee."

  • "I would thoroughly recommend Angels with Bagpipes. The food was of an excellent standard and the wine was first class. The haggis tower was really tasty! The service was very good and there was a lovely ambiance in the restaurant."

If you are looking for a top class restaurant, whether it be a special occasion or just a nice relaxing meal, go here. Pricing reasonable for excellent cuisine, 2 courses with wine about £30.00 per head."
